Tom Hanks hosts remote SNL in first appearance since coronavirus battle

Tom Hanks made his first public appearance since battling the coronavirus when he stunned viewers watching a Saturday Night Live special at the weekend.

The sketch comedy’s regulars performed remotely on Saturday’s (April 11, 2020) episode, and Hanks was a surprise guest host, appearing from his home in Los Angeles.

“I have been the celebrity canary in the coal mine for the coronavirus, and ever since being diagnosed I have been more like America’s dad than ever before,” the Oscar winner said. “No one wants to be around me very long and I make people uncomfortable.”

Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, tested positive for the virus in Australia last month (March 2o20) and after a brief spell in the hospital in Queensland, they were quarantined before flying home to the U.S.

The SNL special was the first new episode to air since the sketch comedy series suspended production last month, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
