Tom Hanks Makes Surprise Appearance on ‘Last Week Tonight’

Tom Hanks made a surprise appearance in the season finale of Last Week Tonight With John Oliver on Sunday night (12Nov17).

The Oscar-winning actor appeared in the concluding sketch of the British comedian’s political talk show as Robert Langdon, the character he played in 2006’s The Da Vinci Code as well as Angels & Demons and Inferno.

In the skit, Hanks stars in a fake trailer for a movie and is seen entering a grand office, announcing, “Sir, the world is in trouble. We need you. The fate of humanity itself is at stake. Will you help us, Mr. President?”

A black leather chair then spins around, revealing a wax statue of Warren G. Harding, the 29th President of the United States. Even with the bizarre scenario, Hanks continues talking, stating that it “isn’t a one-man job” to the figure. Then, four other wax statues of former Presidents – Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and William Henry Harrison – appear on the set. As the five figures line up, Hanks adds, “Gentleman, let’s go wax these b**tards.” The words “Coming 2018” flashed up on the screen at the end of the sketch.

While the concept of the skit appeared rather absurd, it appears Oliver finally found another use for the five wax statues he had purchased following the closure of Gettysburg’s Hall of Presidents and First Ladies in late 2016. The host had also used the wax figures in a sketch with Anna Kendrick, Laura Linney and James Cromwell back in July.

During the last episode of Last Week Tonight for the year, Oliver tackled a number of topics, including comedian Louis C.K.’s admission of sexual misconduct as well as current President Donald Trump’s recent tweets aimed at North Korean leader Kim Jong-n.
