Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain are reuniting onscreen to tackle a psychological thriller about two 1960s housewives whose close friendship takes a dark turn.
The actresses both featured in the 2014 sci-fi epic Interstellar but didn’t share any scenes together, and now they are teaming up to tackle a Hollywood adaptation of Barbara Abel’s 2012 novel, Derriere La Haine.
The new film will be directed by Olivier Masset-Depasse, who previously turned the story into a critically-acclaimed Belgian movie, titled Duelles, in 2018.
50 States of Fright writer Sarah Conradt will adapt the project for English-language audiences, with Hathaway and Chastain playing best friends and neighbors whose perfect family lives are turned upside down by a tragic accident, reports Deadline.
“It takes actors of Jessica and Anne’s caliber to communicate the intricacy of these two roles,” Masset-Depasse writes in a statement. “The relationship between a mother and child is the most powerful connection between two human beings. When this bond is severed, it calls into question conventional morality and even sanity.
“In the behind-closed-doors atmosphere of 1960’s America, Mothers’ Instinct becomes a terrifying, high-pressure powder keg.”
Chastain will also serve as a producer on the film.
