By: Steve Ryfle March 19, 2001 11:50am EST
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 16, 2000 -- Everybody loves a good court-martialing. And everybody loves to see a good-hearted drunk get off the sauce and get his/her life back on track. Lucky for everybody, the two biggest movies in America this weekend were about those two very topics. "Rules of Engagement," the military drama starring Samuel L. Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones, reigned atop the box-office heap for the second consecutive frame, followed closely by Sandra Bullock's much-hyped "28 Days.

By: Steve Ryfle March 19, 2001 11:50am EST
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 13, 2000 -- As the box-office turns: Will Sandra Bullock's turn as a rehabbing pill-popper and booze-swiller put her atop the Hollywood heap? Or will "Rules of Engagement" lock its sights on No. 1 again? The hit-challenged Bullock's entry is the drama "28 Days." Although her main competition for B.O. supremacy appears to be last weekend's champ, "Rules of Engagement," three more major films debut this weekend: the heartwarming "American Psycho," the multi-denominatio
  • Viva Keanu!
By: Fiona Ng March 19, 2001 11:50am EST
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 17, 2000 -- Keanu Reeves nominated for best actor? Impossible but true! The MTV Movie Awards 2000 nominations were announced today, proving once again that the lighting-rod network for American youth culture knows what kids like, even if it only has about 10 different music videos in its rotation. Truth be told, hipper-than-thou MTV's choices for the best of last year's film crop really aren't all that much hipper than the stuffy Academy Awards and Golden Globes, exce

Natalie Portman So says the rep for Natalie Portman, who played the battle-ready ruler in "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace," denying quotes attributed to the 18-year-old actress in an Israeli newspaper that had the Jerusalem-born star saying she'd "passed on" an army draft notice sent to her last year.
