A long-awaited sequel to The Grinch may finally be on the way. According to recent reports, Universal Pictures is developing a follow-up to the beloved 2000 live-action holiday film How the Grinch Stole Christmas, with original star Jim Carrey and director Ron Howard reportedly in discussions to return.
The original movie, based on Dr. Seuss’ classic story, became a holiday favorite after its release and remains one of the most recognizable Christmas films more than 25 years later. Carrey’s memorable performance as the grumpy green recluse helped turn the movie into a box office success and a seasonal staple for families around the world.
While deals have not yet been finalized, reports indicate that Howard is considering returning to direct and produce alongside Imagine Entertainment co-founder Brian Grazer. The project has also reportedly secured a writing team, with Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel working on the screenplay.
Details about the plot remain under wraps. Since the original film concluded with the Grinch embracing the spirit of Christmas and becoming part of the Whoville community, it is unclear what direction a sequel might take. No casting announcements have been made beyond the reported talks with Carrey and Howard, and it remains unknown whether characters such as Cindy Lou Who will return.
Despite the release of Illumination’s animated adaptation in 2018, many viewers still consider Carrey’s portrayal to be the definitive version of the character.
For now, audiences will have to wait for official confirmation and additional details. However, if negotiations are successful, The Grinch could soon be returning to theaters for another holiday adventure, giving fans a new reason to celebrate Christmas in Whoville.
