Bowen Yang is trading the Saturday Night Live stage for Broadway. The comedian and actor is set to make his Broadway debut in Oh, Mary!, joining the hit Cole Escola comedy for a limited engagement beginning this fall.
Yang will step into the title role at Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre on September 15, 2026, with his run scheduled to continue for 12 weeks through December 6. He will take over from Meg Stalter, whose engagement is currently scheduled to conclude September 12.
The announcement marks a major theater milestone for Yang, who has become one of the most recognizable performers on Saturday Night Live. He also appeared in the film adaptation of Wicked, further expanding his résumé beyond television and comedy.
In a statement, Yang expressed his excitement about joining the production and working alongside Escola, whom he has known for years. He described the opportunity as a particularly meaningful way to make his Broadway debut.
Oh, Mary! offers a wildly unconventional take on Mary Todd Lincoln, imagining the historical figure as a chaotic, cabaret-loving character during the period leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Escola wrote and stars in the comedy, which combines outrageous humor with an intentionally absurd version of American history.
The production originally premiered Off-Broadway in 2024 before transferring to Broadway later that year. Since arriving at the Lyceum, Oh, Mary! has become a major box-office success, including becoming the first production in the theater’s history to surpass $1 million in weekly grosses.
The show also earned two Tony Awards in 2025, including Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for Escola and Best Direction of a Play for Sam Pinkleton.
With Bowen Yang taking over the title role, Oh, Mary! is entering another exciting chapter while continuing its successful Broadway run.
