Director Kevin Smith, who last week came under attack by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), has gone on the attack himself -- against fellow director Tim Burton, who, he implies, lifted the ending of Planet of the Apes from Smith's Jay and Silent Bob comic book.

There was a close race for first place between Buena Vista/Disney and Pixar's animated blockbuster "Toy Story 2" and Warner Bros. and Castle Rock Entertainment's opening of the drama "The Green Mile." Unlike most other movies of the current summer aimed primarily at popcorn chompers, Planet of the Apes is not really infuriating many critics. Rather, the reviews are divided almost equally between those who find it somewhat disappointing and those who have gone, er, ape over it.
