  • Sofia Coppola's new movie trashed by Bling Ring burglar
    By: WENN.com April 25, 2013 8:34am EST
Sofia Coppola's latest movie The Bling Ring has attracted criticism from a member of the real life burglar bunch on which the film is based. Alexis Neiers served four weeks behind bars for her part in the so-called 'Bling Ring' gang, which broke into the homes of stars including Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Orlando Bloom in 2008 and 2009 and snatched more than $3 million (£1.9 million) worth of goods. Emma Watson's character, Nicki, is believed to be inspired by Neiers, but the 21 year old is adamant she has no plans to watch Coppola's crime drama. In a series of posts on her Twitter.com page, she writes, "It's trashy and inaccurate... The truth will come out soon enough and I have no intention of seeing this film." The former TV star, who featured on reality series Pretty Wild, also claims The Bling Ring is "based on inaccurate information" put forward by Los Angeles detective Brett Goodkin and journalist Nancy Jo Sales, who she argues are just as "status obsessed" as she and her friends were. She adds, "(The film is) based on Detective Goodkin and Nancy Joe Sales (sic) inaccurate information. 2 people who are everything they accused us of being... Celebrity status obsessed, fame & money hungry..."
  • Oscar Rivals Ang Lee and Steven Spielberg to Sit Next to Each Other (and Nicole Kidman) on Cannes Jury
By: Brian Moylan April 24, 2013 1:06pm EST
It's going to be awwwwkwaaaaard in the South of France this year when both Steven Spielberg and Ang Lee show up to be on the jury at the Cannes Film Festival which starts on May 15 (my birthday!). After intense campaigning Lee and Spielberg were the frontrunenrs for the Best Director Oscar, with Lee taking home the trophy for Life of Pi and Spielberg taking home a greasy In-and-Out Burger from the Vanity Fair party. How will the every decide on a winner? Well, they'll have Nicole Kidman to help. She and double Oscar-winner and Tarantino muse Christoph Waltz are the high wattage stars this year. They'll be joined by Scotsman Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin), Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, Japanese director Naomi Kawase, and Indian actress Vidya Balan. Wait? Isn't Cannes in France? Well, they have actor Daniel Auteuil repping for his home country. Let's hope he can break up any fights that might erupt about whether or not CGI tigers deserve a golden statue.  Follow Brian Moylan on Twitter @BrianJMoylan More: Why the Cannes Film Festival Should Matter to YouCannes Film Festival Line Up AnnouncedChina Sensors Ang Lee's Oscar Speech From Our Partners:Eva Longoria Bikinis on Spring Break (Celebuzz)33 Child Stars: Where Are They Now? • 'The Bling Ring' Trailer: That Sofia Coppola is One Celeb-Obsessed Celebrity
By: Alicia Lutes April 23, 2013 7:36pm EST
Sofia Coppola loves celebrity. She's a part of it, she grew up in it, and nearly all of her movies are about it. Homegirl has a weird obsession with our culture's own weird obsession with famous people, says the writer on a pop culture website! But it's true — it's everywhere, and seems to only grow more insiduous as the years teeter slowly onward. Which is probably why the director penned The Bling Ring screenplay in the first place. Celebrity worship: you're doing it wrong, America. For those who prefer their news to actually contain some, well, news, the story of the Bling Ring (yes, that's what they were called) is a fairly simple, if completely confounding one. You see, one day in October 2008, a bunch of already rich, bored teenagers from Calabasas, California (OMG the Kardashians live there SO kewl), decided to start robbing the homes of a bunch of celebrities (with special emphasis on Paris Hilton for lord knows what reason. Symbolism, I guess.) over a period of nearly a year. That's right — these entitled motherf**kers somehow managed to get away with this for a year. Proof that in America literally anything is possible. Those who need a bit more convincing that this is likely going to be one of the more absurd films to come out in 2013 need look only below at the newly released theatrical trailer. OMG, I wonder what Lindsay Lohan thinks about this trailer. Does she think it's cool!? Does she think it's fun?! Does she think they're like, so totally badass even though they broke into her home and stole her things (if they really are her things, since we all know Lohan has a bit of an affinity for a five-finger discount herself)?! I'm sure the youths (nothin' scarier!) portrayed in this film are just dyyyyying to find out. From jail, obviously, because they're awful. Leslie Mann and American Horror Story's Taissa Farmiga also star in The Bling Ring, which opens in theaters June 14, 2013. Will you so totally be checking it out? Let us know in the comments. • Gus Van Sant Directing '50 Shades of Grey' Is Hollywood's Best Idea and Worst Idea All Together
By: Brian Moylan April 23, 2013 5:14pm EST
Back in January ever-reliable source James Franco let it slip that he thought that Milk and Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant would be taking on mommy porn project 50 Shades of Grey, the hottest property in town that doesn't have a director or stars attached to it.  It seemed absolutely impossible. What would this former art-house director want with this schlocky blockbuster? Well, now it looks like it might actually be happening.  According to The Wrap, Van Sant shot a test reel of a love scene between the lead characters Christian Grey, a billionaire with a taste for bondage, and Anastasia Steele, his young torture victim and sex slave. Alex Pettyfer, who last bared his bod in Magic Mike was cast as Christian Grey. I'm sorry if this is rude, but it sounds like Van Sant and Pettyfer making blue movies on their off time sounds more like a kinky hobby than it does like the start of a possible billion-dollar franchise.  Universal Pictures and Focus Features, who hold the rights to the movie version of the book that everyone's mom read by the pool last summer, have recently said that no director has been in talks and no actors have been signed. That meanst that this Van Sant reel is because he really wants the job or, well, he really wants some very personal footage of Pettyfer and his glistening abs.  But would this movie be good for his career? The book, while popular, is critically loathed and making a film adaptation of the sexually graphic material seems harder than Christian Grey in a whip store. Would the book's fans want to see an auteur's vision of their beloved material. And will Van Sant's highbrow fans show up to see this decidely low-brow skin flick? Probably not. But that the studio is will to make such a strange and bold decision regarding the direction of this project (there are three books after all) is so far the only thing recommending seeing 50 Shades of Grey at all.  Follow Brian Moylan on Twitter @BrianJMoylan More: '50 Shades of Grey' Screenwriter Promises It Will Be NC-17Emma Watson Responds to '50 Shades of Grey' Casting RumorsFirst Photo from '50 Shades of Grey' Revealed From Our Partners:Eva Longoria Bikinis on Spring Break (Celebuzz)33 Child Stars: Where Are They Now? • Florence + the Machine's 'Great Gatsby' Track Is As Moody and Sexy as Its Source Material
By: Aly Semigran April 18, 2013 3:11pm EST
"Over the Love", the song contributed by Florence + the Machine for the anticipated and eclectic soundtrack for Baz Luhrmann's 3D big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's literary classic The Great Gatsby, is pretty much everything you'd expect from them for this particular musical/movie endeavor. It's moody, melodic, and Florence Welch sings lyrics like "I can see the great light, I can see it in your eyes" in that way that particularly hauntingly sexy way only Florence Welch can. (Well, okay, maybe Annie Lennox could). You can listen to the full song — which was heard previously in snippets in the trailer — courtesy of GQ. No matter how you feel about Luhrmann's frantic filmmaking aesthetic, you've got to admit the guy knows how to put together a killer soundtrack, and The Great Gatsby is shaping up to be no exception to the rule. In addition to the window-rattling Florence + the Machine sweeping pop number, the Jay-Z executive-produced album will also featured the eclectic likes of Gotye, The xx, Jack White, Sia, and will.i.am. While you can listen to the Florence + the Machine (and you should, considering they have previously given some serious soundtrack cred to the likes of Eat, Pray, Love and Sex and the City) tune in full, you can get a taste of the rest of the record in the sampler below:  The Great Gatsby hits theaters on May 10, but the soundtrack will be released on May 7.  More: 2013 Cannes Film Festival Lineup Beyonce to Cover Amy Winehouse For 'Gatsby'Beyonce, Florence +the Machine Steal the Spotlight in 'Great Gatsby' Trailer  From Our Partners:Eva Longoria Bikinis on Spring Break (Celebuzz)33 Child Stars: Where Are They Now? • 'The Bling Ring': Emma Watson's Crime Will Be Fashionable — PIC
By: Christian Blauvelt April 15, 2013 1:26pm EST
Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ringis still two months away, but you'd never know that based on how much people are talking about it. First, there was Emma Watson's tongue-roll while dancing in the first trailer, or as I prefer to call it, "The Tongue Roll That Launched a Million GIFs." Then we all started talking about whether the movie is just a toned-down version of Spring Breakers. Just this weekend, Emma Watson raised the temperature of a lot more guys by pole dancing in a clip released from the film. And now, we've got this new poster that defines The Bling Ring's quintet of thieving, fame-obsessed teenagers by their choice of eyewear. Check it out: Considering how literal-minded most movie posters are these days, it's pretty refreshing to see one that approaches its material from a more creative angle. Bling Ring arrives in theaters June 14. More: Calm down, Guys.
