As far as small films go, Thumbsucker is on par and as memorable as it could be. Its statements on medicating yourself into a better person are somewhat unsettling, if realistic. There are no easy answers, but it's still worth asking.

Although Layer Cake might have trouble going up against summer behemoths like Revenge of the Sith and War of the Worlds, its buzz has been justified in a way buzz rarely is. It's a soulful, quick-witted thriller that gets it right.

It's hard not to love the performers in Be Cool, and you won't find this much talent for the price of one movie ticket, even if they do get in each other's way. But if you're looking for substance as well as style, you'll have to go to the video store and Get Shorty.
