    Between the two of them, Ridley Scott and Orlando Bloom have picked up their swords for Gladiator, Troy and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. And that's the problem. If the intriguing but ultimately derivative Kingdom of Heaven had arrived before these recent period epics, it may have stood a better chance of enthralling us.

    In a way, Max is an intriguing "what if." What if the young aspiring artist Adolph Hitler had befriended a fellow artist who was compassionate, wealthy and Jewish, and who also might have tempered his monstrous views, curbed his manic will to power and saved the world from the Holocaust were it not for an understandable rejection of his work? The idea is intriguing and John Cusack as the eponymous Max is sensational. But too many other elements in the film ring false.

    Like the four-star restaurant that is largely its setting, the award-winning Mostly Martha, a big hit in its native Germany, is most definitely worth the detour. As beautifully shot as it is told and acted, Mostly Martha, in German with English subtitles, is a tasty addition to the sub-genre of foodie favorites like Big Night, and Babette's Feast.
