A sci-fi comedy that timidly goes where many men have gone before.
  • Borat Review
By: Brian Marder November 03, 2006 12:22pm EST
Sacha Baron Cohen's untreated multiple personality disorder is our gain. Borat is one of the funniest, most original movies in not-so-recent history. But as you'll see, it's not only the comedy that is eye-opening, jaw-dropping and cringe-inducing. In summation: It huge success! High-five! Wa-wa-wee-wa!
  • BEST OF: The Upside of 'The Insider'
By: Chuck Walton August 15, 2001 10:04am EST
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 9, 2000 -- Most end-of-the-year "best of" lists from critics deplore the current state of movies before telling you about the few nuggets that came out that were actually (according to them) worth your time. The year 1999 was different. The critics didn't complain, and rightfully so. The last of the 1900s marked a groundbreaking revolution in cinema. Films like "Three Kings," "American Beauty," "The Sixth Sense" and "The Blair Witch Project" expanded the boundaries of
  • CHANNEL SURFER: Going to the Dogs
By: Steve Harper March 19, 2001 11:50am EST
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 13, 2000 -- While the February sweeps generally adds up to TV putting its collective "best foot forward," it also means that the best shows of the year all run at the same time, so you'll still miss most of them. It would be nice if the networks could spread the wealth throughout the year, but to make a long, complicated story that no one truly understands short, they don't -- and won't. So here's a heads-up for what's on the tube this week: "HOMICIDE: THE MOVIE" (9
  • TV STUFF: 'Law & Order' Forever
By: Joal Ryan March 19, 2001 11:50am EST
Benjamin Bratt SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 27, 2000 -- A prediction: In the futuristic world of 2005, "Friends" will be ex-"Friends," "ER" will be closed, but "Law & Order" will still be making people nauseous with shaky cameras. The first two are guesses; the third is a lock. On Wednesday, NBC announced that it had renewed the looong-running cop-and-lawyer show for five years -- or through the 2004-2005 season. "Law & Order" debuted in 1990. It is only peaking ratings-wise this year, ran
  • CHANNEL SURFER: Fox-y Stuff
By: Steve Harper March 19, 2001 11:50am EST
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 19, 2000 -- We're declaring this Fox Week here at Channel Surfer. We make this declaration based on the fact that the network has more mentions (four) this week than it's had all year. And, in a twist, none of its highlighted programming involves driving a motorcycle head-on into a train or a staging marriage between strangers. Almost forgotten within the clutter of reality based programming offered by Fox ("and by "reality based," we mean "stupid"), is the fact that
  • ROLE CALL: Puffy Gets 'Made'
By: Chuck Walton March 19, 2001 11:50am EST
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 2, 2000 -- Sean "Puffy" Combs apparently has time to mix business with charges. While attending the Grammys last week, prosecutors accused the rapper/mogul of trying to bribe his driver into taking the fall for a gun found in his vehicle after a New York club shooting in December. (He pleaded not guilty Tuesday to the bribery charges -- just as he had refuted gun possession charges in January.)Though Combs' exact involvement in the incident is still in dispute, he's de
  • TV STUFF: 'The Sopranos' Sings
By: Fiona Ng March 19, 2001 11:50am EST
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 8, 2000 -- "The Sopranos' " stranglehold on awards shows no sign of weakening. HBO's runaway mob series -- a hit at last month's Golden Globes -- has staked out four nominations for best direction in a TV series from the Directors Guild of America, making it the first drama series ever to walk away with four mentions in a single category for the same year. The DGA's TV categories were announced Monday. The four "Sopranos" helmers tapped for the best director award are:
  • NEWSMAKERS: Leo's Paradise Lost
By: Ellen Kim March 19, 2001 11:50am EST
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 9, 2000 -- So he got to shoot on an island off Thailand for months, flying friends in for visits and soaking up an island paradise. But Leonardo DiCaprio, star of "The Beach," has one little quibble. Says Leo to the British magazine The Face, "It truly bothered me ... that [Richard, DiCaprio's character] never had any kind of sexual contact with Francoise," a stunning Frenchwoman played by Virginie Ledoyen, with whom he does a little smooching and frolicking in the su
  • Weekend Looking Like a Real 'Scream'
By: Fiona Ng December 31, 1899 7:00pm EST
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 3, 2000 -- Hollywood should finally have something to scream about at the box office this weekend thanks to "Scream 3." "This weekend there's going to be 'Scream' -- and then everything else," observed one distribution executive. After two consecutive weekends where all it took was a single-digit gross to top the chart, Hollywood is gearing up for some big numbers. Soaring ticket sales are anticipated as Dimension Films -- Miramax's genre label -- launches the third a
