The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time wins big at Olivier Awards

Stage play The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time was the toast of the 2013 Olivier Awards on Sunday (28Apr13), taking home seven trophies. The London production, about an autistic boy who tries to uncover who killed his neighbour's dog, landed the title of Best New Play, Best Director (Marianne Elliott), Best Actor (Luke Treadaway) and Best Supporting Actress (Nicola Walker), as well as mentions for sound, set and lighting design. Dame Helen Mirren was crowned Best Actress for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Audience, which also earned her co-star Richard McCabe the Best Supporting Actor prize for his role as late British Prime Minister Harold Wilson. Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton won Best Actor and Actress in a Musical for their stints in Sweeney Todd, which also received the title of Best Musical Revival. Billy Elliot took home the Audience Award for Most Popular Show, Top Hat was recognised as Best New Musical, Best Entertainment and Family went to Goodnight Mister Tom, and Long Day's Journey Into Night nabbed Best Revival. The winners were announced during the 37th annual ceremony, hosted by Sheridan Smith and Hugh Bonneville at the Royal Opera House in London.

Michael Ball won over by Sweeney Todd co-star Imelda Staunton

The co-stars played murderous partners-in-crime in West End musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street last year (12), and Ball admits working with the Harry Potter star was a career highlight for him. He tells Britain's Daily Express newspaper, "Finding myself opposite one of the best actresses in the country every single night - it was a master class. We both went on knowing we had each other's backs. There was never any ego, any kind of gamesmanship. We just loved doing it together. We riffed off each other. I would burst with pride every night. "I can't imagine it happening again in my career like this. We became great friends, and there's a mutual admiration. We brought different things to the pie. We come from different sensibilities. But it just worked. "And we made each other laugh! Just genius and then breaks my heart on stage. So much integrity. I'm a big fan." The duo went head-to-head at the 2012 Theatre Awards UK, where they were both nominated in the Best Performance in a Musical category, but it was Staunton who walked away with the trophy in October (12).

The house that Mouse built, Disney, is on a bit of a rampage when it comes to its upcoming release slate. So much so that the company's cinematic arm has announced a bevy of release dates for some of its most-anticipated upcoming films. Mondays But it's not all new news, either: some of the movies are completing a rousing rendition of the Release Date Shuffle. The films getting new wide dates are Pirates Of The Caribbean 5, with a new release date of July 10, 2015. The hotly-anticipated, Tina Fey-fronted The Muppets 2 will roll into theaters on March 21, 2014, and the what-the-heck-is-this-movie, no-seriously-what-is-it-all-about-project from Damon Lindelof and director Brad Bird titled 1952 got a new date of December 19, 2014 — just enough time for George Clooney to get acclimated to the 3D world in which this film will be shot. Unfortunately for those looking for a more old-school Disney film experience, they'll have to wait a little bit longer. The Little Mermaid, purported to be the next film from the Disney vaults to get a 3D re-release ala The Lion King and Finding Nemo, has been removed from the schedule. It had been slated for a September 13, 2013 release. The singer/actress, who plays Cora, Countess of Grantham in hit period drama Downton Abbey, became a waitress for the night at The Ivy eaterie to raise funds for theatrical good causes and My Week with Marilyn moviemaker Curtis was in line to take advantage of his A-list server. He joked, "She doesn't (wait on me) at home." Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes also waited on tables for the night as part of the One Night Only scheme, while Emma Thompson, Sir Derek Jacobi, Samantha Bond and Imelda Staunton were among the stars who took on the roles of bar staff, hosts and cloakroom assistants. Proceeds from the night will go to The Combined Theatrical Charities, a group of 15 organisations which support actors and their families in times of hardship.

In the realm of cinema, especially in the major awards circuit, there is one category that often gets shafted to the background: animation. With the assigned stigma that an animated movie is necessarily childlike and uncomplicated, animated pictures rarely get the respect they deserve come Oscar season. But thankfully, there is the Annie Awards, an institution that turns 40 this year. Stars to serve at London restaurant for charity

Guests at A-list eaterie The Ivy will be treated to service from some of stage and screen's most famous faces while dining there on Sunday (02Dec12) as part of an event to raise funds for theatrical good causes. Other celebrities taking part in the One Night Only scheme include James Bond's former Miss Moneypenny Samantha Bond, stage star Simon Russell Beale, and Thompson's actress mother Phyllida Law. They will all work alongside staff at the West End venue, serving meals and looking after guests, with proceeds going to The Combined Theatrical Charities - a group of 15 organisations which support actors and their families in times of hardship. Bond says of the scheme, "We are all thrilled that The Ivy has chosen to support The Combined Theatrical Charities, in what will be an extraordinary and unique event. The calibre of talent that has offered its support for the evening is overwhelming and testament to the altruism and generosity of the acting profession, in support of their colleagues in need." The Ivy boss Fernando Peire adds, "Having had many famous actors ask me over the years 'How much would I give to work just one evening at The Ivy?', I suddenly had a eureka moment that I would put the two together. We have to put on a good show for the customers every time we open our doors; we have to know our lines and we have to get them right. I am really looking forward to seeing how the actors cope with service on Sunday night."
Imelda Staunton picks up theatre award

Staunton and Ball, who play murderous partners in crime in the Stephen Sondheim production, went head-to-head at the London prizegiving, where they were both nominated in the Best Performance in a Musical category. But it was Staunton who came out on top as the winners were unveiled at a ceremony on Sunday (28Oct12). Acting duo Prunella Scales and Timothy West also walked away with The Stage Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Theatre in recognition of their longstanding commitment to productions outside the British capital. The Theatre Awards UK celebrate outstanding stage achievements throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
HBO's 'The Girl' Turns Alfred Hitchcock into a Psychological Horror Villain — EARLY REVIEW

In a scene from the new HBO movie The Girl, which premiered at the Hamptons International Film Festival, Alfred Hitchcock's assistant Peggy attempts to explain why, of all the leading ladies he worked with in his lengthy career, the legendary director's relationship with model-turned-actress Tippi Hedren evolved into obsession. Whatever Hitchcock threw at his star actress, she delivered back to him. "She makes him feel like he can't hurt her." The beloved director of some of the best horror and thriller films of all time is transformed into one of his own off-balanced creations in The Girl, which follows Hitch (Toby Jones) and Hedren (Sienna Miller) as they collaborate together on The Birds (1963) and Marnie (1964). Plucked from the commercial world and groomed by Hitchcock to become a movie star, Hedren gave herself over completely to Hollywood's top director. She had little choice — with so much power in the industry, the only way Hedren would have a fruitful career as an actress would be to follow Hitch's every word. But the film suggests Hitchcock's direction wasn't limited to Hedren's on-screen work — demands of intimacy and a sadistic sense of entitlement entangled Hedren in a web of harassment. Her inability to serve the director would shatter both of their lives. Film buffs hold Hitchcock on a high pedestal, but The Girl has no qualms exploring the dark side of his personality and that's where the film shines brightest. Like other behind-the-scenes dramas, The Girl spends introductory time indulging on the glamor of watching Hitchcock work from behind the camera. Old school Hollywood glistens with period production design, from the expansive backlot to recreations of scenes from The Birds. But director Julian Jarrold (Brideshead Revisited, Red Riding: 1974) and writer Gwyneth Hughes (BBC's outstanding mini-series Five Days) wisely drop the nostalgia in favor of the complex and terrifying relationship between Hitch and Hedren. When Hitchcock shoots 45 takes of The Birds' famous attic sequence, he's not doing it to perfect the shot — he's torturing Hedren. Only before she enters the set for the first time is Hedren alerted that Hitchcock has planned to shoot the scene with real birds. Hedren complies, knowing she can't bail from the picture and wanting to stand up against her off-screen ruffian. With each take, the birds talons slice her face and break her will. Hitchcock watches with an unflinching gaze. Toby Jones is astounding as Hitchcock, conjuring up the charm on the surface and unearthing Hitchcock's twisted center that would occasionally bubble to the top. Jones' Hitch is plagued by his physical insecurities and, in turn, capitalizes on his clout to muscle others. The actor disappears into Hitchcock's voice and mannerisms, but they're never prohibitive of Jones layered performance. Miller, who has been out of the spotlight for a few years, plays Hedren like one of the blonde bombshells that would turn up in the Hitchcock's own films. Hedren's not fleshed out like Hitchcock, but Miller bounces back and forth gracefully from the smiley persona of a professional actress to the emotionally distraught women that emerged whenever Hedren made it home. Like the victims in Compliance, another 2012 film about the frightening power of persuasion, the words of Hitchcock boil in Hedren's mind, making Miller's role mostly silent but always engrossing. Adding to the complexity is Imelda Staunton as Hitchcock's wife Alma. She's commanding as Hitch's persuasive partner and involving her more in the film would have helped make the central duo's battle become even deadlier. One might expect The Girl, with its horror film undertones, to play out in the style of a Hitchcock classic. Thankfully, Jarrold strays away from mimicking the great director's tropes, sparsely alluding to famous iconography (it's hard not to when Hitchclock climbs a set of winding stairs or Hedren washes herself in the shower). References don't clog up the picture, only send chills down the spine. For the most part, Jarrold keeps the flashy camerawork to a minimum, allowing his two leads to play. Occassionaly The Girl meanders away from the central duo does it slow down — as anyone who works on movies will tell you, watching them be made isn't all that interesting — but the core relationship is effectively presented (if not as dark and twisted as it could be). Hedren wasn't just the victim of Hitchcock's on-screen orchestrations — she was the victim of the director himself. The Girl airs on HBO on Oct. 20.
