  • BOX OFFICE ESTIMATES FOR OCT. 6-8, 2000
By: Martin Grove May 08, 2001 4:19am EST
A rich "Parents" opening turned the box office green after two months of lackluster grosses. Universal's PG-13-rated comedy "Meet the Parents" met with greater success than insiders had anticipated. Rather than the $18-22 million range that many Hollywood handicappers were expecting, "Parents" opened to a sizzling ESTIMATED $29.11 million at 2,614 theaters ($11,135 per theater). "Parents'" international release is through DreamWorks Pictures, which co-financed the film and will share equally in
  • B.O. ANALYSIS: 'The Parents' Meet 'The Titans'
By: Martin Grove May 08, 2001 4:19am EST
With "Parents" meeting "Titans" there will be brisk action on the box office playing field and a close race for top honors. "It will be close," an insider promises. "Even though 'Remember the Titans' is expanding, they're bringing in a lot of small markets and there's got to be, at least, a 15% drop. Let's put it at $17 million. I think 'Meet the Parents' has a good chance of being number one. It could be $18 million, or it could more than $20 million if the marketplace expands." The last two we
  • ROLE CALL: 'Mr. Ripley' Grows Up
By: Fiona Ng March 19, 2001 11:50am EST
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 31, 2000 -- Tom Ripley is about to strike again, albeit under a completely different guise. How so? Think John Malkovich and "M:1-2's" Dougray Scott instead of Matt Damon, for instance. Daily Variety reports that Malkovich and Scott are in talks to star in "Ripley's Game," a sort of a follow-up to last year's "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (with Damon as the titled character). The new project, which is based on the third novel in author Patricia Highsmith's Ripley series, follows an

By: Don Chareunsy March 19, 2001 11:50am EST
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 8, 2000 -- There’s something about Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller. Their new comedy “Meet the Parents” bowed in big over the weekend, taking in an estimated $29.11 million in its first week and dethroning last week’s box office champion, the Denzel Washington starrer “Remember the Titans.” “Titans,” which is receiving lukewarm responses from critics but overwhelmingly positive responses from moviegoers, took in an estimated $19.56 in its second week, bringing its total to $46.2 m
  • ROLE CALL: 'Dieter' Lives?
By: Joal Ryan March 19, 2001 11:50am EST
HOLLYWOOD, June 15, 2000 -- The world may be safe yet for another "Saturday Night Live" knock-off flick. Word today is that Mike Myers is being lured back to the botched "Dieter" project by promises of a better script (not to mention an assist from peacemaker Steven Spielberg). Myers walked on the film last month and was subsequently sued by Universal Pictures last week. "Dieter" is based on Myers' old "SNL" sketch "Sprockets." Jim Carrey HANG UP: Jim Carrey is out of Joel Schumacher's wou
  • UNSPOOLED: Stallone Alone
By: Steve Ryfle March 19, 2001 11:50am EST
Another body blow for "Rocky."According to reports today, the hit-challenged Sylvester Stallone, who last year complained he was, yo, "a man without a country," is now minus a big-time deal with Universal Pictures that reportedly guaranteed him $20 mil per flick. No word on when exactly the pact was terminated, or who did the terminating. (Stallone's camp issued a "no comment" on the Daily Variety report.) We only know this: Stallone hasn't had a certified hit since "Cliffhanger" and "Demolition
  • Will Smith, Jar Jar Razzed
By: Ellen Kim March 19, 2001 11:50am EST
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 14, 2000 -- Hollywood types hope their best work will be remembered when that other awards show announces its nominees Tuesday. But unfortunately, their worst work won't be forgotten either, not if the Golden Raspberry Awards Foundation has anything to say about it. At least "Wild Wild West" knows it won't walk away honor-less. Last summer's Will Smith stinker, along with the blockbuster "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace", topped the nominations for the 20t
