In movie industry parlance, there are four audience quadrants--Males Under 25, Males 25 Plus, Females Under 25 and Females 25 Plus. A blockbuster tends to have appeal in all four quadrants, which this summer was the case with The Dark Knight, Iron Man and Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull among others. If Hollywood is going to capitalize on its record-breaking summer of 2008, it will need to score huge with one quadrant in particular this fall, and it is not necessarily Hollywood’s “bread and butter” demo.
Young women will make or break the fourth quarter of this year for the movie business. There are three major Disney films that will rely heavily on turning out Females Under 25, and, of course, Summit unleashes the bookstore and internet sensation Twilight for Thanksgiving. The migration of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to next summer has created an opportunity in the release schedule, and several of these girl-geared pictures are rushing in to fill that gap.
There is no media company better at synergy than Disney. They popularized Miley Cyrus on the Disney Channel, then turned her into a box office sensation with the 3D spectacle Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which delivered $31.1M on its opening weekend and $65.2M during the course of its domestic run. Disney’s cross-platform promotion will be on full display with its female-fueled fall slate.
It all starts with Beverly Hills Chihuahua (Disney), opening wide on October 3. With Piper Perabo (Because I Said So, Cheaper By the Dozen 1 & 2) as a caretaker for a mouthy dog in Beverly Hills, I am very high on this movie, and, in my estimation, it has a chance to be one of the big hits of the fall. It will play as a family film, and also, with voices provided by Salma Hayek, Andy Garcia, Cheech Marin, Edward James Olmos, George Lopez and Paul Rodriguez, it will do brisk business with Latinos. But ultimately, when you make a movie about the kind of dog that fits in a purse, you need Females Under 25 to show up in big numbers.
Disney follows with High School Musical 3: Senior Year, already a phenomenon on the Disney Channel, and now a slam-dunk on the big screen starting October 24. Tweens, especially tween girls, are buzzing wildly about this one, and keep in mind, the middle schoolers, who watched the original High School Musical on cable in 2006, are now in high school. The hype will only heighten as the release date approaches. The teens who read Perez Hilton are certain to get plenty of Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens news in advance of the release of HSM3.
November 21 will bring Twilight (Summit) to America’s multiplexes, based on Stephenie Meyer’s young adult vampire novels. As Comic-Con attendees found out this summer, teenage girls will be falling over each other to see this film adaptation first. Think of it as Anne Rice for young females, and Kristen Stewart (Into the Wild, In the Land of Women) as protagonist Isabella Swan and Robert Pattinson (Harry Potter 4 & 5) as tragic vampire hero Edward Cullen. The question is, can this movie expand its reach beyond its hardcore teenage female fans to include the girls who have not read the books? That will be the job of the marketing folks at upstart distributor Summit, releasing their first big movie.
Bolt (Disney) also debuts November 21, and although this is technically a family film, it is powered by Disney star Miley Cyrus, who provides one of the lead voices. This is a Digital 3D animated film that also features the voice of John Travolta, an actor that many teenage girls know only as the guy in drag who played Tracy Turnblad’s mom in Hairspray. Miley will be flogging this project everywhere from the Disney Channel to TRL on MTV to Ellen, so Females Under 25 are being counted on to show up in droves.
There are two other fall titles that are counting on younger women. Sony’s Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist is set for October 3 with Michael Cera, in his first big role since Juno, and Kat Dennings (The House Bunny) in a PG13-rated movie that looks to be in the tradition of John Hughes. Although teen guys will vuy tickets as well, a high school relationship movie is probably looking for Females Under 25 to drive ticket sales.
Finally, Freestyle Releasing is handling The Haunting of Molly Hartley to bow on Halloween. The film revolves around a 17-year-old girl trying to get a fresh start at a new high school, struggling to fit in while she deals with disturbing visions from the dark secrets of her past. Again, the PG-13 rating and a female protagonist indicate that young women will need to drive the box office.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT?
Set against the background of 1920s Spain where repression and political upheaval enveloped a nation on the verge of civil war Little Ashes focuses on the emergence of three young artists Salvador Dali Luis Bunuel and Federico Garcia Lorca. When Dali arrives fresh-faced at the University at the age of 18 Bunuel and Lorca welcome him into their decadent group and the trio become fast friends. Their budding friendship is soon threatened however when Dali and Lorca develop a special bond in which their sexual and artistic explorations collide with personal ambition love of country and their own passion for each other.
WHO’S IN IT?
In a performance shot before Twilight made him an international star that women swoon over Robert Pattinson may surprise fans with his spot-on portrayal of the sexually confused over-the-top artist Salvador Dali. With his signature handlebar mustache and a serviceable Spanish accent Pattinson captures the essence of the young Dali convincing in his depiction of the artistic tirades bisexual encounters and egotistical conceit that informed the great painter’s early years. As the object of Dali’s early affections newcomer Javier Beltran is intriguing as the fatalistic and seductive playwright and poet Federico Garcia Lorca while Matthew McNulty is quite fine as Bunuel who himself would go on to become one of Spain’s - and the world’s - most important film directors. As Magdalena and Gala the women who try to tame these artists Marina Gatell and Arly Jover are beautiful and effective even though their roles are really sideshows to the film’s true focus and intentions.
WHAT’S GOOD?
Despite the low budget Madrid in the '20s is nicely suggested and meticulously recreated. Director Paul Morrison has a nice feel for the period and a good eye for casting these tricky roles.
WHAT’S BAD?
The film tries to bite off more than it can chew covering too much of the era and coming off as a mere overview of these times and key relationships. The idea of seeing the artists as young men is good but not enough time is taken to really show what they are made of. The artistic fire and sexual freedom that must have been prevalent then is glossed over and not totally convincing. This probably would have worked better as a TV mini-series.
BUT SHOULD TWILIGHT FANS LINE UP?
As his first film post-Twilight it won’t matter. Robert Pattinson may be de-fanged here but this independent art-house item won’t be around long enough to become a blip on his new fandom’s radar.
NETFLIX OR MULTIPLEX?
This small flick probably won’t find its way to the local mall. Considering the hard “R” nature of the material Pattinson’s adoring young flock will probably have to wait to see it on DVD anyway.

Heartthrob Robert Pattinson is facing some serious competition -- movie bosses are eyeing Channing Tatum for a lead role in the vampire franchise's third outing, Eclipse.
Pattinson has become one of Hollywood's hottest young stars since he landed the role of bloodsucker Edward Cullen in Twilight.
But it could be time for the young Brit to stand in the sidelines -- screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg is desperate to sign former model Tatum as nasty vampire Riley.
She tells E! Online, "There's a very big battle at the end with Riley, and I think Channing would do that so well.
"And there are some complexities to that character. He really is tragic. He's a puppet for Victoria (vampire character). So he has to break your heart a little bit at the end when he realizes that she doesn't want him. Channing could do that beautifully."

Robert Pattinson will star in a new Summit production, the romantic drama Remember Me, ScreenDaily.com reports.
Allen Coulter will direct the film that Summit chief Patrick Wachsberger described as this generation's Love Story. A female lead is being cast. Rachel Getting Married writer Jenny Lumet has finished the latest draft of the screenplay.
Pattinson will shoot the film this summer in New York in between Twilight sequels New Moon and Eclipse. Nick Osborne and Trevor Engelson of Underground Films are producing.
Further, Screen reports that Gary Winick is directing Letters to Juliet, with Amanda Seyfried.
The actress will play an American girl in Italy who discovers the legend of the love letters visitors leave in the wall of Juliet's (Capulet of Romeo and Juliet) courtyard in Verona and which are individually answered by a group of women called the Secretaries of Juliet.
While at the wall, she discovers a letter written in 1958 which has never been picked up and goes on a quest to find the lovers in question.
Tim Sullivan wrote the screenplay from an original draft by Jose Rivera. Ellen Barkin, whose Applehead Productions originally brought the concept to Summit's attention, is producing alongside Mark Canton, says Screen.
The rest of the casting is underway while Wachsberger told Screen the tone was in the vein of Four Weddings and a Funeral, but with "a lot of emotion."
Summit will handle domestic distribution on both films and is selling them at Cannes.

Robert Pattinson is completely baffled by the continued gossip linking him to his Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart -- calling the romance rumors "ridiculous."
The pair, who play on-screen lovers Edward Bullen and Bella Swan in the vampire franchise, has been dogged by reports that they are enjoying a secret love affair.
But Pattinson insists the situation has got out of control -- especially when he sees their 'romance' is front-page news.
He tells Entertainment Tonight, "It becomes a joke. There was some magazine the other day about me and Kristen, and when you look at it and realize it's on the front of a magazine... You realize that people are actually reading that even though how ridiculous it is. It's really bizarre."

Frost/Nixon star Michael Sheen is set to star as a bloodsucking vampire in the highly anticipated Twilight sequel.
Sheen has agreed to take on a prominent role alongside fellow Brit Robert Pattinson in New Moon, director Chris Weitz has revealed.
He will play the character Aro -- the leader of an Italian vampire clan called the Volturi.
Weitz says, "Michael’s role is so important because he’s the head of all vampires. Aro is, on the surface, a very gracious and friendly vampire, but beneath that he is a tremendous threat."
Sheen will reportedly receive $7.3 million for taking on the role.
Filming on New Moon is scheduled to begin in Italy this spring.
