The new comedy Monster-in-Law, in which Jennifer Lopez squares off against villainous future mother-in-law Jane Fonda, debuted at No.1 this weekend at the box office with a healthy $24 million. Will Ferrell's newest laugh-fest Kicking & Screaming, in which he battles his competitive father, played by Robert Duvall, opened in second place with $20.9, while Jet Li's actioner Unleashed premiered in third with $10.5 million.

With Jet Li attempting a wide emotional range, Unleashed will undoubtedly surprise some. But meddling with the martial arts star's proven, straightforward action formula may prove to be a costly flaw.

Box Office Analysis, Sept. 6: The Chinese indie Hero, which stars Jet Li and Zhang Ziyi as high-flyin' Chinese swordsmen, came out in the top spot for the second weekend in a row this Labor Day holiday with $8.8 million, followed close behind by Without a Paddle at $7 million. That sneaky snake tale Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid dropped to third with $6.2 million.

The Chinese indie Hero, which stars Jet Li and Zhang Ziyi as high-flyin' Chinese swordsman, opened in the top spot this weekend with $17.8 million, while that sneaky snake tale Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid debuted in second with $13.2 million. The sequel, however, didn't surpass the original Anaconda, which opened in 1997 with $16.6 million.
