  • Matt Lauer on Ann Curry's Firing: 'I Don’t Think the Show Handled the Transition Well'
By: Michael Arbeiter March 11, 2013 3:29pm EST
For years on end, The Today Show has quenched mankind's thirst for the mundane. The placid, not at all challenging white noise to run in the background of one's brainless daytime routine. The NBC institution never egged us on, never stirred any bad mojo, never made us think or feel whatsoever... until they gave Ann Curry the axe back in '12, and viewers grew up in arms (at least relatively) over what was considered an unfair dismissal of the co-anchor. One of the targets of fans' animosity was Matt Lauer, who was criticized for his decorum during the ordeal. But Lauer himself, talking to The Daily Beast, agrees that the network was not exactly operating at peak efficiency in its decision. RELATED: Ashley Judd Is Probably Running for Senate: What Challenges Will She Face? "I don’t think the show and the network handled the transition well," Lauer says. "You don’t have to be Einstein to know that." According to the standing anchor, the whole transition "was a hard time for everybody ... We were getting kicked around a lot. Some of it was self-inflicted and perhaps deserved." Lauer recounts what Curry's absence did to the Today team's reputation: "It clearly did not help us. We were seen as a family, and we didn't handle a family matter well." RELATED: Barbara Walters Confirms: Elisabeth Hasselbeck Not Leaving 'The View' Steve Capus, former president of NBC News, speaks on behalf of Lauer, whose behind-the-scenes behavior might have been a lot different from the accusations surrounding him: "When Matt was informed that we had made this decision, his good counsel was to go slow, to take care of Ann, and to do the right things ... He was quietly and publicly a supporter of Ann’s throughout the entire process. It is unfair that Matt has shouldered an undue amount of blame for a decision he disagreed with." While we may give way to new ideas about Lauer's involvement in the Curry ordeal, many will only be satisfied when the former correspondent takes her next regular spot on daytime TV. Soon, fellow Curryists. Soon. • Barbara Walters Confirms Sad News That Elisabeth Hasselbeck Is Not Leaving 'The View'
By: Brian Moylan March 11, 2013 11:41am EST
On Friday the Internet erupted with the joyous news that Elisabeth Hasselbeck, a Raggedy Nancy Reagan doll that Barbara Walters found under a bench in Central Park and gave a job,  was leaving daytime chatfest The View. As the choruses of "Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead" rang out the nation over, I got the news from ABC that the rumors were false and that Elisabeth and her gonzo political views had not been voted off the island after all.  Today, Barbara Walters confirmed the truth on the show itself. At the beginning of their "Hot Topics" segments, Walters, who created and owns the franchise and will be collecting coins from it long after she's in her grave, said, “We love Elisabeth. We value and appreciate her point of view. It helps give the show perspective. We have no plans for Elisabeth to leave this show.” RELATED: Don't Get So Excited, Elisabeth Hasselbeck Isn't Leaving 'The View'  So, that's that. • Unhappy Hour: Justin Bieber's Meltdown Begins and 11 Other Reasons to Drink
By: Sydney Bucksbaum March 09, 2013 12:06pm EST
Each week, Hollywood gives us something to whine about, and the week of March 4 was no different. We could make a drinking game out of this week, but that would be too dangerous. Instead, we'll stick to the usual formula: varying levels of alcoholic respite depending on how bothersome the week's issues are. Is your biggest complaint this week a flimsy one? How about a light cocktail to take the edge off? Got a real bone to pick with a celeb or entertainment entity this week? Go ahead, grab a drink that'll put hair on your chest. Here are the week's entertainment stories that are forcing us to seek a bubbly or boozy refuge. And maybe an idea or two about how you should wash them down. Chill Out With a Glass of Wine Justin Bieber's Meltdown Has Officially Begun: Hey, we all knew it was coming. After collapsing onstage during a concert and being rushed to the hospital, Bieber then leapt from his car to "beat the f***" out of papparazzi. This was all following his worst birthday ever, too. Are we really supposed to feel bad for the uber-famous, uber-successful pop superstar? Topanga Strips Down: The Boy Meets World star set out to prove that the '90s are still hot. Danielle Fishel, mission accomplished.  Shia LaBeouf Is Shockingly Buff: ... but still not hot. We can't figure out why, but serious kudos to those abs and pecs, LaBeouf. You've been holding out on us! Will Smith Made Up a New Accent: ...and we have no idea what it's supposed to be. The rest of the new trailer for After Earth looks pretty cool, though.  Take It Up a Notch: Pop The Champagne The Glass Ceiling Still Exists In Hollywood: Only three women are directing big, blockbuster movies this year. So much for today being International Women's Day, huh? George Lucas is Opening an Art Museum: He's trying to prove that Star Wars is highbrow, more highbrow than a museum about actual history.  Vivienne Westwood Hates Michelle Obama's Style: Famed fashion designer Vivienne Westwood thinks the FLOTUS has "dreadful" style. We're pretty sure she is completely alone in that argument.  Louis C.K. Hates His Own Promo: The trailer for his upcoming HBO comedy special, Oh My God, is all about how much he hates his own trailer. But isn't that why we love him? Classiness Is Overrated, Where's the Tequila? Joy Behar Is Leaving The View: After 16 and a half years, the daytime talk show is losing one of its core members. Who should replace her? But before you start to panic: Elisabeth Hasselbeck is still sticking around. Consolation prize? Sesame Street Lied to Us! Turns out, The Count can't actually count. • Don't Get So Excited, Elisabeth Hasselbeck Isn't Leaving 'The View' Just Yet
By: Brian Moylan March 08, 2013 5:28pm EST
Everyone is getting all excited that Eliasabeth Hasselbeck, a scarecrow that Barbara Walters found at the Republican National Convention and brought to life with magical fairy dust but never brought to the Wizard for her helping of brains, was fired from daytime chatfest The View. As much as many liberal leaning people would like it to be true, according to ABC the allegations are false.  "Elisabeth Hasselbeck is a valued member of The View and has a long term contract," says Lauri Hogan, ABC Entertainment Group's Publicity Director. Considering news broke yesterday that Joy Behar — the only originating member of the panel that is still left — announced she would be leaving, it would make sense that producers would try to scuttle Hasselbeck at the same time. RELATED: Who Should Replace Joy Behar on 'The View'? The story sprung from an Us Weekly exclusive that said the star's contract had not been renewed  after research discovered that viewers thought she was too extreme, right-wing, and not likeable. What sort of research did this entail? Actually watching the show? That should be research enough. And while that research is probably still true, the consequences, at least for now, appear to be false. From Our Partners:Kim Kardashian's Maternity Style: So Wrong? • Who Should Replace Joy Behar on 'The View'?
By: Brian Moylan March 08, 2013 4:07pm EST
What is life going to be like without Joy? No, I'm not asking an existential question that you're going to have to dig out your college philosophy textbook to answer, I'm asking specifically about The View — the ABC chicken coop that has been clucking wildly at itself on our screens for the past 16 years. Joy Behar, the only founding chicken on the panel (beside mother hen Barbara Walters, who created and owns the franchise), is leaving to explore greener pastures or, in this clunky extended metaphor, other coops. So what will the show do to replace the older funny lady on the panel? Well, we have some suggestions on who might be good for the role. RELATED: Joy Behar Leaving 'The View' Sarah Silverman: One of the funniest ladies in Hollywood doesn't have a regular gig and that, ladies and gentlemen, is one of the greatest travesties of our day. Silverman has the same liberal politics as the retiring comedian, but she has something that Joy never did: punchlines that work. She's probably way too edgy for Barbara and the show would probably have to pay the guy who bleeps the cuss words on the seven-second delay extra to keep her mouth under wraps, but this would be nothing short of genius. Kathy Griffin: If the show is getting rid of one aging red-headed funny lady, why not replace it with another one. No, not the ghost of Lucy Arnez, Kathy Griffin. Her Bravo talk show isn't working out that well (either in the ratings or the format) but I have a feeling that she would flourish in this environment. And she would be getting constant side-eye from Barbara, which means GIFs galore. Rosie O'Donnell: I know we've been down this road before, but the last time that The View was really explosive was when this divisive host was on the panel. Remember her fights with Elisabeth Hasselbeck? Her feud with Donald Trump? Her dramatic exit from the show? Oh, this would make for some great television, especially because Rosie is crazier than ever. Barbara Walters to Return to 'The View' After Month-Long Hiatus Jane Fonda: Now that Joy is leaving who is going to make tired hot flash jokes and make inappropriate comments about sexuality at an advanced age? Barbarella will! Yes, Jane Fonda is smart, candid, and increasingly fearless as she matures. She also has scads of famous friends to bring to the show and her remembrances of Hollywood parties gone by are probably better than any starlet hawking her new movie. Whitney Cummings: Her E! talk show didn't really pan out so it's not like she has much else to do. Well, you know, other than tend to her two sitcoms that are on the air. On second thought, this broad may need to share with the rest of the world. She has enough on her plate.   Courtney Stodden: Admit it, you would watch the hell out of this. • Barbara Walters To Return To 'The View' After Month-Long Hiatus
By: Aly Semigran February 26, 2013 3:33pm EST
The Babs is back in town. Well, she will be very soon. The View co-host Barbara Walters made the announcement when she called to check-in with her co-hosts (as well as guest Brooke Shields) on Tuesday morning, and give them the news that she'd be back for good on Monday, March 4. The 83-year-old has been absent from the ABC daytime talk show for over a month in order to recover from a concussion and a bout with the chicken pox. RELATED: Honey Boo Boo is One of Barbara Walter's 'Most Fascinating People' "Like it or not, I'm coming back on the show again," announced Walters, who said she missed her View c0-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd. "No more chicken pox. ... I haven't been contagious for a while, but they wanted me to have rest, and I've had enough rest and I'm ready to come back." Walters also tweeted the news, sharing with fans from her page, "I'm back! Starting Monday I’m returning to @theviewtv. Ladies - thanks for keeping my seat warm!"  RELATED: Barbara Walters Hospitalized Following Fall Walters came down with a case of chicken pox after she sustained a concussion when she fainted and hit her head at the British ambassador's residence, where she also suffered a cut on her forehead. • Barbara Walters Has the Chicken Pox! Get Well Soon, Baba Wawa
By: Jean Bentley January 28, 2013 12:24pm EST
Barbara Walters, you had us worried for a minute! After taking a spill in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 19, you were rushed to the hospital (for precautionary reasons, medical officials said). Doctors wouldn't let you out because you had a fever, reports the Associated Press, and it turns out they had a good reason to keep you there — chicken pox. Yeah, as in the itchy disease most people get when they're in elementary school, confirmed Whoopi Goldberg on Monday's episode of The View. We imagine this isn't very fun for you, not only because it's painful, but because, generally, childhood diseases are a lot harder on your body when they strike you in adulthood. Although you're a spry 83-year-old, this must have been quite the blow! Hopefully they've given you some of the good painkillers in the hospital … …so that you're as healthy as ever when you finally get back to work. PS: You should probably stay away from Elisabeth Hasselbeck for a while just to be safe, since she has a couple of young kids and lice are getting harder and harder to kill nowadays. By: Shaunna Murphy January 09, 2013 6:34pm EST
Oh, the People's Choice Awards — where The CW reigns supreme, Beilebers face off against Directioners, and Linkin Park, Green Day, No Doubt, and Train being nominated for best band isn't a homage to the '90s, but an actual thing. True some of the nominees are head-scratchers (you know 666 Park and Partners were canceled, right?), but in a time where Lincoln and Argo are all anybody is talking about, it's fun to take a step back and watch Kaley Cuoco give shiny trophies to those who don't get any love during the regular awards season. It was a pretty tame night overall, and many of the winners weren't announced during the telecast. On the presenter side, Olivia Munn riffed on the debate on whether or not she is a "true geek" during the award for favorite country artist (Taylor Swift), and it fell pretty flat. As for the winners, Christina Aguilera was named the "People's Voice" and performed, as did Jason Aldean and Alicia Keys. Favorite comedic actor winner Adam Sandler gave one of his patented Sandler speeches, awkwardly listing his favorite things. (Favorite Kardashian? Ringo. Fave One-Directioner? Five-way tie. Favorite way to fly? Unicorn. You get it.) Jennifer Lawrence won for a gaggle of things, and was as goofy and refreshingly blunt as we've come to expect her to be. (She apparently dripped sweat all over Robert Downey Jr.) On the sweet side, Sandra Bullock won a new humanitarian award, Emma Watson seemed genuinely touched when she won best dramatic actress, and Downey dedicated his favorite actor award to an elderly, life-long fan who passed away earlier this week. Anyway, read the full list of winners below, and if you don't agree — well, blame the people. • The Slow Decline of Rosie O'Donnell's Career
By: Brian Moylan December 19, 2012 7:55am EST
Rosie O'Donnell was always an unlikely star. Never conventionally attractive, but more than conventionally funny, she was a different sort of actress who took her winning character turns in movies and turned it into a daytime talk show that was shockingly popular and totally Rosie. Then, at the height or her popularity, she came out of the closet (far before it was safe or popular) and quit her show. It's been downhill ever since. Now Rosie is reportedly in talks to replace Sharon Osbourne as a judge on NBC's America's Got Talent and she's lobbying hard for the job. Wait, the Rosie we fell in love with wouldn't replace anyone. Oh, how far our Rosie has fallen. Let's review the highlights of Rosie's career. After being a struggling standup (and, shockingly, a VH1 veejay) she started getting small but winning roles in movies like A League Of Their Own, The Flintstones, and Sleepless in Seattle. She got her own talk show in 1996 and it was a smashing success, earning her the title Queen of Nice and catapulting her onto the A List. Shortly after coming out, she quit her show in 2002, at the height of its popularity, and everything since then has been a misstep. In 2006 she embarked on a wondrously tumultuous stint on The View serving as the liberal bludgeon to conservative Muppet Elisabeth Hasselbeck, but the struggles on the set were so intense that she left the show a month before her contract was up. Barbara Walters was fine with it and replaced her with Whoopi Goldberg who has been there farting and peeing herself ever since. In 2011 none other than Oprah Winfrey gave O'Donnell a third chance with her own show on her burgeoning OWN network. Though it started out with good reviews, the show only averaged 190,000 viewers and was plagued with rumors of tumult behind the scenes and went through several format changes. After five months the show got the axe. And between her three stints on TV, Rosie has also weathered a Broadway flop (Taboo), a barely-watched variety program, and a protracted legal battle with the publisher of Rosie magazine. This is not a sterling track record. Now Rosie is lobbying hard to sit next to her old friend Howard Stern who came up with the idea for her to join him on the panel of America's Got Talent. She told the New York Observer that she is in talks to host the show and would be "thrilled" to do it. (Neither reps from NBC nor O'Donnell's camp responded to a request for comment.) Earlier this year, she tried to get the role of Miss Hannigan in a new production of Annie on Broadway, but negotiations broke down and it went to Katie Finneran. Who? Exactly! (Yeah, she's a Tony winner, but she's no Rosie O'Donnell.) Let's get this straight, Rosie has gone from her own show to a shared show to an abysmally-rated cable show to now potentially joining the panel on a talent show. This is not an upward trajectory, it is a tailspin. And this isn't like Ellen DeGeneres clutching a Coke cup on American Idol in it's prime, which was a position that brought Ellen an even larger audience and more prestige. No, this is like a famous person going back to judge their hometown beauty pageant. AGT might be on NBC, but it is basically a public access show with a bigger budget. The winners of the last season weren't even people, they were dogs. Rosie O'Donnell, who used to fling Koosh balls to the masses, is now going to be putting tiaras on a bunch of pooches to the grumbles of bored grandmas in Indiana, who are still mad at the fight she had with Tom Selleck about gun control back in 1999. Sure, Piers Morgan went from AGT to replacing Larry King on CNN (a gig that O'Donnell would have been terrific at) but I don't think that will happen for Rosie. Sure she's spilled her guts out in the silly poems on her blog, gotten in feuds with that beehive with eyes Donald Trump, and suffered a million other indignities large and small since her coronation as the reigning monarch of delightfulness, but she can't debase herself further. Sure, she would be a great judge on the show and it's right up her alley, but at what cost? If she's going to have to take smaller and smaller gigs, at least she should take some that are dignified and up to her level of talent. Speaking of talent, she has way more than America's Got Talent. That show is, quite literally, for the dogs. The wait is over! At last the nominations for the least authoritative awards show of all, the People's Choice Awards, are here. 93 million votes were tallied by phone, Interwebs, and even in-person polling at Walgreens (seriously), to determine the contenders for the 2013 kudos fest. It turns out that these guys Adam Levine (six nods), Channing Tatum (four), and Justin Bieber (five) are really popular. I have a Y chromosome, so I wouldn't have known. 2013 People's Choice Awards host Kaley Cuoco (The Big Bang Theory) announced the nominees this morning in Los Angeles at the Paley Center for Media, along with country star Jason Aldean, Anthony Anderson, Casey Wilson, Jason O'Mara, and executive producer Mark Burnett.
