Shrek the Third pretty much serves up the same tired fairytale shenanigans with little of the original’s magic. Still, the franchise’s undeniable charm alleviates some of the Third ’s banality.

An insightful epic that recasts World War II through a prism of symbols and heroes, Clint Eastwood’s Flags of Our Fathers is a visual treat, combining CGI with an old look in ambitious, thrilling battle scenes. One of the year’s best films.

The fantastical Lady in the Water—M. Night Shyamalan’s most wildly imaginative yet obscure work to date—will probably disappoint those looking for that certain Shyamalan je n’sais quoi. Still, you can’t fault the guy for being a true original.

Waist Deep is just another one of those middle-of-the-road action flicks. You know the type, painfully formulaic but with some decent shoot-outs and plenty of pretty—and ugly—people to gawk at. It shouldn’t amount to much, though.

For the guys, this movie may be just as painful as going shoe shopping with a lady friend. Yet, it's refreshing to see Shirley MacLaine still has a bit of Irma la Douce left in her. Maybe she could keep the cast at her retirement community and do Cocoon: The Next Generation.
