SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 27, 2000 -- Acting ability aside, you have to admire Madonna's tenacity when it comes to putting herself time and again in front of the lens, raw and intrepid -- as if she's never heard of seriously bad flicks such as "Body of Evidence," "Who's That Girl" and "Shanghai Express." The list goes on and on. "Next Best Thing" So this Friday finds the M One going at it all over again with "The Next Best Thing" (opening nationwide). In her continual quest to prove that she's a legit screen actress, Madonna tackles the role of a straight woman who forms an alternative household with her gay pal (played by her real-life gay pal Rupert Everett) and their son, whom they conceived on a night of drunken stupor. The idea of a gay man living with a straight woman living with their kid may have been intriguing (or even provocative) a couple years back. But
HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 22, 2000 -- Dirty Harry tried for two hours, but it's still up in the air whether a jury will make his day in court. Clint Eastwood testified in court, fending off a lawsuit brought against him by a woman with muscular dystrophy. Diane zum Brunnen, 51, says the actor's Mission Ranch near Carmel, Calif., doesn't comply with state laws that require facilities to be accessible to those in wheelchairs. Zum Brunnen says she couldn't get around in her wheelchair when she was a guest at the hotel in 1996. Eastwood fired back saying he tried to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act while preserving the 150-year-old hotel's heritage and antique value, The Associated Press reports. The 70-year-old actor acknowledged that access problems at his hotel exist, but renovations to comply with state laws are a continual process. Stay tuned.

That anecdote was reportedly jotted down in a sheriff's report this weekend by a deputy who interviewed Anne Heche this past weekend, after she showed up uninvited at a farmer's rural house and was promptly escorted to a hospital for examination. In case you haven't heard, Heche, 31, and her celebrity companion of three years, Ellen DeGeneres, ended their highly public romance on Saturday. It was just hours later that Heche apparently parked her Toyota SUV along an isolated stretch of Highway 33, about 40 miles west of Fresno, and walked about a mile along a dirt road until she reached the farmer's door

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 7, 2000 -- You would think that after last summer's insane brouhaha that was "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace", the masses would breathe a sigh of relief. But the commotion is brewing for the second prequel (yet to be titled), which won't be released until summer 2002. Although it isn't inspiring 'round-the-block lines just yet, it is scheduled to begin filming at Fox Studios Australia this June, so this brings us to the most talked-about casting decision of the year: Who will play the grown-up Anakin Skywalker? We'll know soon enough. Casting for "Episode II" is going on right this second, according to Jeanne Cole, spokeswoman for Lucasfilm. Casting director Robin Gurland has been seeing "hundreds of actors" for the past month, but no decision has been made yet. A casting memo that circulated around the Internet -- and was co

Spokespersons for CBS and ABC declined to comment to Hollywood.com, but an NBC spokesman refuted the Times report.

He was rushed into surgery and then spent five days hospitalized. It's not the kind of scandal-fueld story that we usually cull from the weekly tabloids, but we felt Reeve's plight and his brave battle against the odds were worth noting. HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 7, 2000 -- Daytime gabber Rosie O’Donnell has talked her way right into a lawsuit. The People for Ethical Treatment of Animals filed a defamation lawsuit Tuesday against O’Donnell for allegedly saying that the Gap sells leather approved by PETA, according to The Associated Press. O’Donnell was referring to the clothing store chain’s decision to stop using Indian and Chinese leather products. ``There's no such thing as PETA-approved leather,'' said Lisa Lange, a PETA spokeswoman. The animal rights group wants an on-air retraction and $350,000 in punitive damages. Laura Mandel, a spokeswoman for the show, said she was unaware of the lawsuit and could not comment.
HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 12, 2000 -- The World Wrestling Federation is taking the Parents Television Council, a media watchdog, to the mat with a federal lawsuit. The WWF filed the suit Thursday in U.S. District Court in New York, saying that the Parents Television Council has been engaging in "scare tactics" with the shows’ advertisers in an effort to drop sponsorship of the programs. The WWF also said that the PTC’s chairman, L. The WWF has asked the court for an injunction against what it calls the PTC's unlawful behavior, as well as undisclosed statutory and punitive damages. Bozell issued a statement in response to the lawsuit and has speculated that his group mi
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 19, 2000 -- Former child star Macaulay Culkin, of "Home Alone" fame, made his debut on the London stage Wednesday night after six years away from the acting limelight. Culkin, now 20, plays a 15-year-old schoolboy who has an affair with his French instructor, played by Irene Jacob, in "Madame Melville." Many in the London theater audience reportedly found the still-boyish actor's seduction scenes awkward and strained. Once the hottest child star in Hollywood, Culkin's career lost steam by the time he turned 14. Contributing to the demise were the outlandish demands made by his father and manager, Kit Culkin, as well as a bitter custody battle between the child actor's parents. Estimated to have earned $30 million to $50 million from his handful of films, Culkin married actress Rachel Miner, both 17 at the time, in 1998. The couple recently separated.
HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 13, 2000 -- The entertainment industry is sorry. Really. In light of the Federal Trade Commission report released Monday, MPAA chief Jack Valenti -- representing the U.S. entertainment industry -- is telling a Senate committee today that the Industry pledges to stop marketing R-rated movies to kids, The Hollywood Reporter says. "We are going to examine how we advertise and conduct research so that we do not deliberately seek out the very young in the promotion of R-rating films," Valenti says, in written testimony that the Reporter obtained in advance. Ordered by President Clinton and congressional leaders after the Columbine High School shootings last April, the FTC report denounces the entertainment industry’s relentless attempts to market violent films, music and games to children, even though it knew that the materials are intended for adults
HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 11, 2000 -- The U.S. entertainment industry aggressively markets violent films, music and games to children even when they have been labeled for adults only, says an FTC report released today. The Federal Trade Commission report, which didn’t address the causal link between violence and the media, charged that Hollywood’s marketing plans undermined the ratings system credibility used by the entertainment industry to warn parents about violence. “Target marketing to children of entertainment products with violent content is pervasive and aggressive,” FTC Chairman Robert Pitofsky told a news conference. The FTC report, ordered by President Clinton and congressional leaders after the deadly shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado in April, received immediate responses from the candidates in the presidential race. Vice President Al Gore began

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 5, 2000 -- No dog days in court ahead for Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson. But late Tuesday, the lawyer for the massage specialist said a deal had been massaged. Terms will be determined via binding arbitration. In the suit filed in 1998, one Doreen Cott said she was bitten by the couple's "vicious" Rottweiler on July 3, 1997, as she visited the celebrity home to give Pamela a massage. SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 23, 2000 -- Your last reminder: Final Oscar ballots are due today. For Hollywood.com's complete Oscar coverage go here. That's right, with all the news about lost ballots, found ballots, stolen Oscars, found Oscars, etc., we thought some people might be in a state of utter Oscar confusion. So here's the drill: Final Oscar ballots must be returned to the Los Angeles offices of PricewaterhouseCoopers by 5 p.m. PST. PricewaterhouseCoopers will tabulate the results of the voting and place the winners' names in sealed envelopes. And PWC's tabulating partners Greg Garrison and Lisa Pierozzi will be the only two people who know the results of the voting until the night of the ceremony, otherwise known as Sunday. SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 15, 2000 -- Christina Ricci, star of such gloomy fare as "Sleepy Hollow" and "Buffalo '66," will put her experiences to work in her latest project. Daily Variety says the indie siren has agreed to grapple with depression as the star and co-producer of a big-screen version of "Prozac Nation." The movie adapts Elizabeth Wurtzel's 1994 autobiographical account of her lifelong bout with the disease. The New York writer graduated from Harvard and became a well-known journalist, but her crippling feelings once caused her to attempt suicide. Prozac, she said, was the lifesaver that helped her reshape her life. Ricci's interest in the book sparked the development of the project. The film's set to begin shooting May 15 with "Insomnia's" Erik Skjoldbjaerg at the helm. BOOB TUBE REDUX: Ex-"Roseanne" star John Goodman can't resist a return t
WEST HOLLYWOOD -- On the surface, "The End of the Affair" is a love story, infusing elements of obsession and jealousy. But against the background of World War II during London's Blitz, love gets taken to the ultimate extreme, and destiny's hand takes hold. It was this precise spin that drew director Neil Jordan to first adapt, then direct the film. The director of films such as "The Crying Game" (for which he won a screenplay Oscar) and "Interview With a Vampire" read Graham Greene's novel back in high school but began to think of it as a movie when he reacquainted himself with the text five years ago. "It was fascinating stuff," the 49-year-old director says, relaxing in a whiskey bar at the Sunset Marquis Hotel & Villa. "The combination of sexuality and mysticism. SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 4, 2000 -- Some guys would give a lung to play Anakin Skywalker in the new "Star Wars" movie. Leonardo DiCaprio? He's "unavailable." The actor's rep tells USA Today that the 25-year-old star did meet with George Lucas about the "Episode II" prequel. But the conference was all for naught. Says DiCaprio publicist Ken Sunshine: "[H]e is definitely unavailable." "Episode II" is slated to go before cameras this summer -- about the same time DiCaprio is slated to start "Gangs of New York" for Martin Scorsese. HEY, ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE! HOLLYWOOD, May 19, 2000 -- The price of real estate may have skyrocketed in recent years, but Hollywood studios can still buy up choice property, it seems, by merely running big ads in Variety. Case in point: Last week, Universal announced a May 11, 2001, release for "The Mummy Returns," the now-in-development sequel to last year's embalmed-monster hit. The implicit message in the full-color, two-page spread was more than "Hey, we're making another mummy movie." It was a pre-emptive strike aimed at all the other studios that are now arranging their own Summer 2001 slates. Not that studios (readily) admit to such tactics. "The real reason [for the ad] is the first 'Mummy' was such a huge success for us, and we are in production on the sequel, and there's been so much interest and anticipation about the movie that we thought we'd let everyone know the [release] dat
