"Charlie's Angels" won this weekend's box office election by a mile despite projections that "Little Nicky" might give it a devil of a time. "Angels," Columbia's PG-13 action adventure comedy, continued kicking box office butt in its second weekend with a still sexy estimated $25.0 million (-38%) at 3,037 theaters (theater count unchanged; $8,232 per theater). Its cume is approximately $75.4 million, heading for $150 million or more. "Angels" had the highest per-theater average for any film playing in 500 or more theaters last weekend. "Great news for us," Sony Pictures Entertainment worldwide marketing & distribution president Jeff Blake said Sunday morning. "It's just a terrific hold considering the record opening we had the week before." Asked where "Angels" is going, Blake replied, "We should be able to hit $100 million by Thanksgiving and still have t

Director William Friedkin and author William Blatty have sued Warner Bros., Turner Network Television and Turner Broadcasting System, claiming they were bilked out of cable profits for the 2000 re-release of The Exorcist.
Friedkin, who directed the film, and Blatty, who wrote the best-selling novel and screenplay on which the film is based, charges that AOL Time Warner gave cable rights for the revamped Exorcist to TNT and TBS for free. They are asking for unspecified damages.
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 25, 2000 -- The days of playing sonny are over for Seth Green. Green, who of course portrayed Dr. Evil's smart-mouth son in Mike Myers' "Austin Powers" films, has inked a deal to join the likes of Billy Crystal, John Cusack and Catherine Zeta-Jones in "American Sweethearts," Daily Variety says. The film follows a veteran publicist (Crystal) who is faced with the problem of promoting a film whose two leading stars are going through a messy divorce in real life. Green will play an upstart publicist being groomed to replace the Crystal character. BERNIE'S THE MAC: There's George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and now Bernie Mac. That's right, Mac -- one of the "Original Kings of Comedy" stars -- is in talks to join the aforementioned big names in the remake of the Rat Pack vanity flick "Ocean's 11," Variety says. Mac will play one of the titular 1
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 18, 2000 -- Elizabeth Hurley's bedeviled character may have charmed Brendan Fraser in "Bedazzled," but the supermodel turned actress's smiles couldn't win over the striking SAG actors who protested at the film's premiere Tuesday night in the Westwood section of Los Angeles. Carrying posters saying "Go Home Scab" and "Elizabeth, You Make Me Hurl," the members marched in a line in front of the Mann Village Theatre's red carpet before celebrities arrived and continued to press forward with jeers and whistle-blowing when limousines pulled up. When Hurley finally appeared, the noise grew deafening, and publicists held up umbrellas and movie posters to shield the mob from the actress. Hurley, for her part, refused to let the mayhem rain on her parade. She answered reporters' questions with candor and even cracked a joke or two about her newly single status.
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 6, 2000 -- The devil's got a new name, and her name is Jennifer Love Hewitt. The Hollywood Reporter says that the "Party of Five" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer" actress will play the titular role of the devil in "The Devil and Daniel Webster," which is said to be a contemporary retelling of the classic tale. The film also stars Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin. In the film, Hewitt's devil will go head to head with Hopkins' character in a battle for the soul of a writer played by Baldwin. The project will begin production Jan. 15. 'SEA' BOUND: "Whatever It Takes" heartthrob James Franco will play the son of Robert De Niro in the thriller "City by the Sea," the Reporter says. The story is about a police officer (De Niro) who discovers that his son is a killer. MO' FRANCO: In other James Franco-as-a-son news today: The Reporter
HOLLYWOOD, June 19, 2000 -- Has America become too prudish for projectile vomiting? Apparently the Motion Picture Association of America thinks so. The powerful ratings board recently gave a thumbs-down to a trailer for the upcoming re-release of "The Exorcist," deeming it too "extreme" for modern audiences. Yes, we're talking about "The Exorcist," that high-falutin' devil-possession movie that came out in, uh, 1973. Twenty-freakin'-seven years ago. This has director William Friedkin, who supervised the restoration of the film, including 12 minutes of footage that was cut from the original version, hopping mad. "Rejecting it on the grounds that it was too intense is like rejecting it on the grounds that it's too funny," Friedkin told The Hollywood Reporter last week. "It makes no sense at all and seems to be contrary to the purpose of the ratings
