  HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 16, 2001 -- “Traffic” and “Nurse Betty” were the top winners at the 5th Annual Golden Satellite Awards on Sunday night.
  
  “Traffic” picked up a best drama award and another for its director, Steven Soderbergh.
  
  “Nurse Betty” took home the best comedy award and a best actress prize for its star, Renee Zellweger, Daily Variety reports.
  
  Held at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., the awards show is organized by the International Press Academy, a splinter group of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the group that puts on the Golden Globes).
  
  The IPA also awarded “Chicken Run” the animated feature prize and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” the foreign film award. Leading dramatic acting honors went to Geoffrey Rush for “Quills” and Ellen Burstyn for “Requiem for a Dream.”

  SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 17, 2000 -- Yet another awards ceremony honoring the same people and the same films were held this past weekend -- this time by the International Press Academy for its fourth annual Golden Satellite Awards.
  
  Among the winners were some of the award circuit's established favorites including "The Insider", which took top honors as best dramatic film. Its helmer, Michael Mann, was named best director. Previous best-film laurels for "The Insider" came from the likes of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Film Critics Association.
  
  Spike Jonze's first feature "Being John Malkovich" was named best comedy or musical, with the film's show-stealing co-star (and New York Film Critics Circle winner) Catherine Keener taking the award for best supporting actress.

  HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 19, 2000 -- "Gladiator" and "Traffic" lead the nominations for the fifth annual Golden Satellite Awards presented by the International Press Academy.
  
  "Gladiator," with 10 nominations, and "Traffic," with nine nods, are competing against "Billy Elliot," "Erin Brockovich," "Quills" and "Dancer in the Dark" for best motion picture drama, according to Daily Variety.
  
  The nominations for best motion picture comedy or musical are "Almost Famous," "Best in Show," "Nurse Betty," "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?," "State and Main" and "Wonder Boys."

  Veteran TV comedy writer Hal Goldman, whose credits were featured prominently on the Jack Benny television show, died on June 27 at the age of 81, the Associated Press reported Thursday.

  Thursday at 5:19 a.m. PST, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association will begin announcing the nominations for the 58th Annual Golden Globe Awards, to be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Jan. 21.

  Oscar Names Producer, Golden Globes Names Entries

  HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 13, 2000 -- Billy Crystal has said that he won't return to hosting the Oscars this year, but one thing is for sure: Gilbert Cates will reprise his role as producer of the awards telecast.
  
  The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Robert Rehme announced today that Cates will produce the this year's Oscar telecast. This would mark the 10th time that Cates has served in the post, the most ever for anyone in the awards history.
  
  "There won't be much of a learning curve for him," John Pavlik, the Academy's communications director, told Hollywood.com. "[Gil] knows what to do and how to do it. It's just a matter of plugging the right elements in for him."
  
  The 73rd Annual Academy Awards will be held at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium on March 25.

  According to the Los Angeles Times, Paramount Television is asking the Peacock Network to pay $8 million per episode for Kelsey Grammer's series in contract renewal talks. But the problem is that NBC is standing firm on its existing pay rate, which amounts to about $5 million per show.
  
  According to the report, if the stalemate persists, Paramount can shop the series to other networks after March 1, when its exclusive negotiating period with NBC ends.
  
  NBC currently pays $6 million in license fees for "Friends," the highest ever for a half-hour comedy.

  NBC Fails to Maintain Gold-Medal Ratings in Sydney

  HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 28, 2000 -- Despite stellar ratings last week, NBC's coverage of the 2000 Olympiad is losing steam with viewers.
  
  A disappointing 18.6 million viewers tuned into the games on Tuesday night, according to the Neilsen ratings -- the lowest since the 1968 Tokyo games. In fact, a rerun of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire almost eclipsed NBC's coverage with a 15.4 rating.
  
  By comparison, the Sydney Olympiad is overall 9 ratings points behind the viewership of the Atlanta games, and 14 ratings points behind those held in Barcelona.
  
  Why is NBC taking a hit in ratings this week? In a word, Buffy.
  
  The WB's fall premiere of Buffy the Vampire Slayer bit into the Olympic coverage Tuesday night, with a rating of 3.2 million among males -- giving the WB a second-place finish. The overall ratings for Buffy this week set a record high for the series.

  HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 11, 2000 -- It was a golden evening for the Screen Actors Guild on Emmy night. Celebrities such as Emmy winner Jack Lemmon (for “Oprah Winfrey Presents: Tuesdays With Morrie”) along with John Lithgow, David Schwimmer and James Cromwell arrived at the 52nd Annual Emmy Awards red carpet pre-show Sunday night at L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium donning gold ribbons in support of the SAG strike.
  
  SAG had requested that its members and others wear the ribbons in support of the long-running strike in response to actions to end royalty payments for commercials.

  Late-Breaking 'Golden Girls' News!

  HOLLYWOOD, May 11, 2000 -- A former star of "The Golden Girls" has been struck down in the prime of old age. Septuagenarian Estelle Getty tells the May 16 edition of the Globe that she is battling Parkinson's disease.
  
  "I'm determined not to go under with this thing," Getty, 75, tells the supermarket tab.
  
  Getty says she began experiencing symptoms five years ago, but remains in good health. She's due to appear in the May 15 edition of the CBS sitcom "Ladies' Man," alongside her ex-"Golden Girls" comrades Betty White, 78, and Rue McClanahan, 65.

  Sharon Stone Watches Golden Globes

  SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 21, 1999 — Golden Globe voters are certainly no strangers to the handiwork of Sharon Stone.
  
  They are, however, a tad unfamiliar (or is it uncomfortable?) with her watches.
  
  A day after the 41-year-old star received her fourth career Golden Globe nomination for "The Muse" comes word that Stone sent each of the 82 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association -- the voting group behind the awards -- a gold watch. The Coach timepieces, estimated to cost $295 to $395 each, were mailed out Dec. 13, today's Daily Variety says. (Voting for the Golden Globe nominees didn't close until Dec. 16.)
  
  Stone's reputed grand gesture was met with caution from Foreign Press President Helmut Voss, who ordered his members to immediately return the gifts to the actress.
