HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 8, 2000 -- If Vice President Al Gore and Texas Gov. George W. Bush had their druthers, then Hollywood would transform from tawdry to tame and maybe go from lascivious to lame. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn. -- have been loud on the Hollywood issue, they've reportedly received $14.7 million in campaign contributions from the television, music and movie industries while Republicans have raised just $9.1 million from those industries for the November election. <

The veteran actor of more than 50 Hollywood films was quick to trash the town that made him a star, Reuters reports. Keitel handed down his advice today at the 41st International Thessaloniki Film Festival, where many aspiring artists were present. "Don't ask me any questions about Hollywood. ... What is more important is you with the camera, a story, some actors, some friends and suffering and struggling to tell your stories," Keitel said. The 61-year-old actor was at the event to promote his latest film, "Ulysses Gaze," with its Greek director, The Angelopoulos. In the film, Keitel plays a Greek filmmaker who goes on a spiritual journey from Greece to the post-war Balkans. "I wish Hollywood would come to Greece and stay in some of the theaters that your an
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 21, 2000 -- Some call it magic, but we say it's the ultimate revenge of the four-eyed nerd. As promised, Warner Bros. today introduced us to Harry Potter - or, more precisely, to 11-year-old Daniel Radcliffe, who'll play the world's most famous kid in the studio's forthcoming big-screen adaptation of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." The lucky kid is an utter unknown who, thanks to the signature circular-framed glasses and hair, bears more than a passing resemblance to the fantasy book hero. "We saw so many enormously talented kids in the search for Harry," Chris Columbus, the flick's director, says on the Warners Web site (www.wb.com). "The process was intense and there were times when we felt we would never find an individual who embodied the complex spirit and depth of Harry Potter. Then, Dan walked into the room and we all knew we had found Harr

HOLLYWOOD, July 31, 2000 -- The GOP doesn’t have Hollywood heavyweights such as Barbra Streisand, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg in its corner, but it does have a few celebrities up its sleeve. According to Reuters, pro wrestler The Rock, actors Bruce Willis and Bo Derek and former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young are among the celebrities appearing at the Republican national convention that will nominate Texas Gov. George W. Bush for president in Philadelphia this week. Other scheduled, nonpolitical guests: country singer Hank Williams Jr., singer Jon Secada, the Temptations, Chaka Khan and "NYPD Blue’s" Rick Schroder. "We’ve got a unique celebrity lineup that will bridge generations and keep people on the edge of their seats," GOP convention Co-Chairman Andy Card told Reuters.
HOLLYWOOD, July 28, 2000 -- Holly Hunter got game. A game of tennis, that is. The Academy Award-winning actress ("The Piano") is going to portray tennis legend Billie Jean King in the ABC television movie, tentatively titled "Battle of the Sexes," which follows the 1972 match between King and Bobby Riggs. King, the No. 1 women's player at the time, handily defeated Riggs, ranked No. 100, in the highly publicized match. Riggs had boasted that the No. 100 men's tennis player could defeat the top women's player. DUNCAN GOES 'APES': Michael Clarke Duncan, the colossal actor of "The Green Mile" fame, is in final talks to join the cast of Tim Burton’s "Planet of the Apes," The Hollywood Reporter says. SPIKE ON BOXING: The Reporter also informs us that director Spike Lee is currently working on a biopic on boxing legend Joe Louis. The project, which is expected to go in
HOLLYWOOD, July 26, 2000 -- Who’s the fairest of them all? According to Industry analyst James Ulmer, it’s the Pretty Woman with the (sometimes) long, curly red locks. A Georgia peach by the name of Julia Fiona Roberts tops Ulmer’s Y2K list of the 200 hottest actors and actresses in show business. His roster is due out in book form, titled "James Ulmer’s Hollywood Hot List: The Complete Guide to Star Power," in the fall. The only other woman to crack the Top 20 is the recently single Meg Ryan, who clocks in at No. 8. Occupying the No. 2 through No. 7 spots between Roberts and Ryan are Hollywood heavy-hitters Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis, John Travolta and Brad Pitt. Leonardo DiCaprio and Will Smith round out the Top 10. Among Ulmer’s criteria in determining the Hot List are bankability, professionalism, willingness to travel and promote, acting
SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 7, 2000 -- A last link to Hollywood's old-school glamour years is gone. Douglas Fairbanks Jr., spawn of "The Black Pirate," stepson of America's Sweetheart, onetime husband of "Mommie Dearest" and a film star in his own right, died today in New York. He was 90. Fairbanks appeared in more than 80 films and TV movies, including the 1939 adventure classic "Gunga Din." He was perhaps best known, though, for being dapper and for doing the dapper thing in the company of giants. The son of silent-era great Douglas Fairbanks, the scion hung with the likes of Mary Pickford (his stepmom) and Joan Crawford (the first of his three wives). The cause of death was not disclosed.
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., March 19, 2000 - Rene Russo, the actress, didn't win any awards for her head-turning performance in "The Thomas Crown Affair." But tonight here at the Beverly Hilton, Rene Russo, the haircut, did. Welcome to the first-ever Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild Awards, where the above-the-title stars take back seats to behind-the-scenes primping professionals. Yes, it was the beauty folks' turn to make Oscar-like acceptance speeches and bask in the praise of thankful A-list celebrities who they've made look good, "day after day, year after year, facelift after facelift," as host Rita Rudner drolly put it. "It's the American dream that I've heard so much about. It's happening to me right now," hair stylist Enzo Angileri said, accepting the so-called Georgie award for doing Russo's do in "Thomas Crown," named best contemporary hairstyling wor
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 15, 2000 -- Film critics seem to have all the fun, dishing out catchy blurbs and influencing the fate of the latest Hollywood offerings with a tilt of the thumb, while powerless actors, directors and producers have no recourse but to curse them from afar. But today, Hollywood has the last word. Daily Variety surveyed four dozen filmmakers for their opinions on the nations' top movie reviewers and -- surprise! -- they're pretty darn critical of the critics. So critical, in fact, that almost nobody was willing to let their names be published in the trade newspaper's article, lest they incur the printed wrath of any pundit they decided to diss. Variety didn't rank the critics from best to worst, nor did it give marks to individual critics for their (perceived) strengths and weaknesses. But the catty comments of those unidentified Hollywood types
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 1, 2000 -- Maybe they'll call it "South Park: Smaller, Shorter & Definitely Cut."While those little two-dimensional kids from Colorado used every four-letter word in existence last summer in their big-screen debut, at the Academy Awards later this month they may have to bite their tongues. "South Park" "Blame Canada," the bring-down-the-house number from "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut," is nominated for the Best Original Song Oscar, but its use of the dreaded "F" word and other naughty references has become a hot potato for the cartoon's creators, Academy officials and ABC network censors. One thing's certain: "Blame Canada," like all the other nominees, will be performed at the Oscars, as per tradition. But will the offensive words be deleted? Will the TV network bleep out the foul language, like CBS did when Alanis Morissette pe
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 18, 2000 -- Leave it to Hollywood to try to fool audiences into thinking that Walter Matthau and any woman could produce offspring in the form of Diane Keaton, Lisa Kudrow and Meg Ryan. The three actresses, who, uh, aside from their gender have nothing but blond hair in common, co-star in Columbia Pictures' "Hanging Up" (opening today) as sisters dealing with an aging father (Matthau). "Hanging Up" The Pointer Sisters they are not. How do three kids -- who in flashbacks appear close in age -- grow up into a mismatched trio wherein Keaton suddenly looks (at least) 15 years older than Ryan and Kudrow? Welcome to Hollywood-style gene splicing."Hanging Up" is just the latest example of mismatched sibling combos. Consider:-- "Little Women": The lack of family genes is very obvious in Gillian Armstrong's 1994 remake featuring an Oscar
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 9, 2000 -- The People's Choice Awards are (almost) here - and so is every other blinkin' award show. The People's Choice bash, to be broadcast tonight at 9pm (EST/PST) on CBS, kicks off Hollywood's action- and hardware-packed awards season. By the end of March, if you're not polishing a fancy paperweight, you're just not trying. (Either that, or your agent stinks.) Savvy industry insiders monitor these awards carefully, knowing that kudos from critics' circles and trade guilds dramatically influence a film's public standing, box-office success - and Oscar status. First up: the 26th Annual People's Choice Awards. As is the People's Choice way, winners are selected per public-opinion polls rather than academies and other muckty-muck types. "Nash Bridges" types Don Johnson and Cheech Marin host. In the film categories, "The Matrix," "The Si
That's part of your problem. You haven't seen enough movies. All of life's riddles are answered in the movies." "Grand Canyon," 1991Where ya' gonna be at that precise split second between 1999 and 2000? New York? New Orleans? Paris? The corner bar?No matter your choice, as far as Tinseltown players are concerned, they've been there, done that.Hollywood could always throw a party. Sometimes Hollywood acted as if it invented parties, and sometimes we even believed it. There were the luncheons and the dinner parties and the no-meals parties. Some private celebrations got so outrageous, so out there, so out of hand, the bashes made the papers. Or the courts. So Hollywood folks know how to party off screen. But what about on screen? As we count down and ring-a-ding-ding in a new century, let's see what the movies have had to say about partying time and raising h
PASADENA, Calif. -- After nearly a week of trying to make contact with the $165 million Mars Polar Lander, scientists and NASA officials have all but given up the mission as a failure. Never an industry to shy away from big-money crap shoots, the motion picture community is putting a great deal of faith in a pair of Mars-related pictures that it hopes will generate substantially more interest and success than the recent NASA fiasco. Disney is putting a great deal of time and strength behind its summer 2000 offering "Mission to Mars." Directed by Brian DePalma and starring Gary Sinise, Tim Robbins, Don Cheadle, Kim Delaney and Jerry O'Connell, "Mars" surrounds a seemingly failed manned mission to the red planet. As rescue operations are put in place, it is quickly discovered that an even greater menace may be waiting for them on Mars. Competing for summer box office bucks
A procession of European and Asian filmmakers speaking at a Korean film festival Wednesday have warned of Hollywood's cultural invasion and urged united resistance against it. Speaking at the Puchon International Festival of Fantasy Film, Korean star Moon Seong-Keon declared, "Hollywood domination is dangerous for world cinema." Nevertheless, he said, "We have yet to determine which is the best means to combat it effectively."
Legendary French film director Jean-Luc Godard lashed out Tuesday at Hollywood, charging that movie studios there had reduced the art of cinema to "a commodity."
The London Sun tabloid, which has taken credit for putting "Great Train Robber" Ronnie Biggs back behind bars in Britain, said Wednesday that it has been "bombarded" with offers from Hollywood studios to buy the rights to its story about the 71-year-old former fugitive.
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 4, 2000 -- They might not win Oscars, but several singer/actors/divas are up for Grammys. Nominations for the 42nd Grammy Awards, honoring the would-be best in music, were announced in Los Angeles today -- and the list of hopefuls reads like a who's-who in movieland, with Jennifer Lopez ("Out of Sight"), Courtney Love ("Man in the Moon") and Cher ("Tea With Mussolini") among those making the cut. Here's a look at some of the key Grammy races involving Hollywood types: 'BELIEVE' IT OR NOT: That infectious dance song you heard all last year, Cher's "Believe," set the stage for the Oscar winner ("Moonstruck") to make her pop comeback. The Grammy people handed Cher three nominations, for Record of the Year, Best Pop Album and Best Dance Recording. Rivaling her in the Dance Recording category is Jennifer Lopez. Lopez's nomination is for "Wait
"Good evening, my dress is see-through," 2000 MTV Movie Awards host Sarah Jessica Parker said during her introduction to the ceremony. Snappy one-liners like those are what make the MTV movie awards - or any MTV awards for that matter - unique.
