  The PG-13-rated action adventure sequel -- known for short as "M:I-2" -- got off to a flying start with its Wednesday opening to $12.5 million at a record-setting 3,653 theaters ($3,422 per theater).
  
  "It's a 37% first choice in the tracking," an insider points out, predicting blockbuster business for the long holiday weekend. Looking back, he adds, the original "Mission" was a 27% first choice when it opened, and last year's "Star Wars: Episode One -- The Phantom Menace" was a 43% first choice.

  Anthony Dwain Lee, 39, was attending a crowded Halloween party in the Benedict Canyon area of Los Angeles early Saturday morning when L.A. police officer Tarriel Hopper shot him several times through a glass door from the outside of the house.
  
  Lee was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
  
  The Los Angeles Police Department was responding to calls complaining about the noisy party. And according to a statement released by the LAPD, Hopper opened fire at Lee when the victim pointed at police with what turned out to be a fake gun.
  
  Among Lee's screen credits are the 1997 Jim Carrey hit comedy "Liar, Liar," the critically acclaimed CBS drama "Brooklyn South" and an upcoming episode of "ER."

The 67-year-old actor returned to his car to find his wife had been shot in the forehead, according to police.

  Police: cocaine found in Downey's system

  Actor Robert Downey Jr. had cocaine in his system when he was arrested April 24 on a charge of suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance, Culver City, Calif., police said Thursday. Reuters reports that Downey, 36, had submitted urine samples to police immediately following his arrest. The samples, after analysis by toxicology experts, indicated cocaine was in Downey's system, Reuters said.   Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell has publicly endorsed Britain's ruling Labour Party for the June 7 elections, Reuters reports. A press release from the Labour Party cites her praise for current Prime Minister Tony Blair and wife Cherie. "We all need good parenting with love and guidance and I think Tony and Cherie are great examples to us," said Halliwell, who left the Spice Girls in 1998. Halliwell's most recent single, It's Raining Men, became her fourth solo single to hit No. 1 in England, reaching to top spot last week.   Actor Don Johnson, who was accused of grabbing a woman on her way to the bathroom and making lewd suggestions, will not be prosecuted by the San Francisco district attorney's office, The Associated Press reports. The Nash Bridges star and his spokespeople have denied the incident, which allegedly occurred in a San Francisco sushi bar. This is the second time Johnson has been accused of sexual impropriety.   Analyzing a report compiled by technology research firm Webnoize, Napster chief executive officer Hank Barry says that there a number of consumers who "remain loyal" to the song-swap service's file sharing, Reuters reports.   After its two-week box office reign, "Gladiator" should fall prey to Buena Vista/Disney's opening of its PG-rated computer-animated "Dinosaur" at 3,257 theaters.
  
  "Dinosaur's" 21% first-choice tracking doesn't really tell the whole story, according to insiders. "It's just fine, because kids' movies don't track," says one executive.
  
  Estimates by Hollywood handicappers of just how big "Dinosaur" will open range from a cautious $25-35 million to a really exuberant $35-40 million. Making projections even more challenging is the fact that a great many "Dinosaur" tickets will be sold at reduced prices to children.

  Sean Brosnan was seriously injured in a car crash in Malibu, Calif., last month. In a statement, Brosnan's camp said Sean was recently readmitted to the hospital for complications.
  
  "The couple has delayed the wedding until Sean has made a full recovery," his office said.

  DreamWorks is distributing "Gladiator" domestically, while Universal is releasing it internationally. The two studios co-financed the film, which reportedly cost $103 million to make, and are 50-50 partners, sharing equally in its success.

  "I don't know what the market will bear this weekend," says a distribution executive. Good Friday is typically a very strong box office day, but Saturday should only be fair, and Easter Sunday is never a great day for moviegoing.
