  • COMING SOON: Julia Does Un-Romantic

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 12, 2000 -- What can money and power get you in Hollywood? Apparently, more money, more power and a choice of any role you desire. Just ask Julia Roberts.

The actress, recently anointed by Forbes magazine as the most powerful person in Hollywood, next will be seen playing against type in the legal drama "Erin Brockovich" (opening wide Friday).

By "against type," we're not referring to the cool $20 mil Roberts reportedly banked for playing a secretary name of Erin. What we mean is simply that this particular film is outside of the actress' area of specialty (or marketability) -- the romantic comedy.

Based on a true story and directed by seasoned stylist Steven Soderbergh ("Out of Sight"), Roberts plays a small-town paralegal who spearheads a lawsuit against a utility company she says is polluting the water. (But not to worry. Just becau

  • TV STUFF: Julia Louis-Dreyfus Returns?

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 5, 2000 -- It's been two years since the end of an era for "Seinfeld," and Julia Louis-Dreyfus" is thinking about returning to the tube.

And thinking is the operative term here.

According to Daily Variety, the erstwhile tube actress has been meeting with top programming execs at some of the major networks of late. And while she is said to not be "dying" to get back to the sitcom circuit anytime soon, the trade paper did say that Louis-Dreyfus is at least looking at scripts and meeting with writers.

    Stay tuned.

JOINING THE BEAT: Variety also says that David Straithairn will join the CBS cop/mob drama "Big Apple," with actors Michael Madsen, Donnie Wahlberg, Kim Dickens, Jeffrey Pierce and Ed O'Neill already on board.

PARTY OF THREE: "Party of Five" co-star Scott Bairstow, "Thirtysomething" actress Patricia Wettig and James Handy will

  • I'm Julia, Hear Me Roar

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 5, 2000 -- Julia Roberts has got clout.

Just ask The Hollywood Reporter, who has voted the "Erin Brockovich" actress to the No. 3 spot on their annual 50 most influential women in show biz list, which comes out today.

And what's noteworthy is that Roberts is the only actress to make the trade paper's titular power index -- which is commonly populated by largely unrecognizable entertainment suits and exec types -- in nine years.

"We tend not to focus on talent (actresses) because the list was first created to turn the spotlight on women who are doing a great job and go largely unnoticed, but Julia Roberts is in a class by herself," the Reporter's editorial director of special issues, Paula Parisi, told Reuters.

And the class that Parisi spoke of is Roberts' $20 million per picture salary (the highest for any and all actresses), her marketabi

  • France Loves Julia Child

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 20, 2000 -- Julia Child on Sunday became the first U.S. chef to receive the French government's highest honor, the Legion of Honor.

"I am very, very proud," the 88-year-old Child said.

The honor was bestowed upon Child by restaurateur Roger Fessaguet, a knight in the Legion, during a black-tie ceremony in Boston, according to The Associated Press.

"Before Julia Child, America was still a meat and potatoes country," Fessaguet said. "She helped to make cooking the culture it is today."

Child, who was born in Pasadena, Calif., moved to Paris with her husband after the second world war and received her culinary training at the Cordon Bleu.

She published her first book, "Mastering the Art of French Cooking," in 1961 and most recently hosted a 39-part series called "Baking at Julia's."

  • Julia Goes Spinning

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 10, 2000 -- Pretty woman Julia Roberts is certainly no stranger to revolution -- or shall we say Joe Roth's Revolution Studios.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the $20 million per pic starlet will lend her star power to the preliminarily titled "Project 3" for the titular studio. The project will reteam Roberts with "The Mexican" helmer Gore Verbinski, who became available after Leonardo DiCaprio dropped out of DreamWorks' "Catch Me If You Can," which he was set to direct.

Reminiscent of George Cukor's 1994 classic "Gaslight," "Project 3" is described as a story wherein a man tries to convince his wife that she is going crazy.

Besides this film, Roberts is also committed to other Revolution projects such as "American Sweethearts" and "Replay."

GOLDEN BOYS UNITE AGAIN: The Reporter also says that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are in talks

  • ROLE CALL: Julia in ‘Replay’ Mode

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 2, 2000 -- Julia Roberts might very well be the hardest working woman in Hollywood.

With "American Sweethearts" and the "Ocean’s Eleven" remake already in the works, the $20 mil actress is in talks to star in another high-profile project.

In "Replay," Roberts would reteam with Brad Pitt -- whom the actress worked with in the upcoming "The Mexican" and will be working with again in "Ocean’s Eleven" -- where she plays the former love of a deceased man (Pitt) who comes back to life to correct his mistakes.

The project will mark the first collaboration between ex-Disney head Joe Roth’s Revolution Studios and Warner Bros.

MOVING IN: Daily Variety reports that Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore will star in "The Duplex." The comedy is about a young couple trying to move into a swanky New York duplex.

  • ROLE CALL: Mo' Julia Roberts

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 25, 2000 -- Julia Roberts is no stranger to Joe Roth’s Revolution Studios. Already pegged to star in Revolution's "Project 3" and "American Sweethearts," Roberts might apparently also star in the studio’s upcoming "Perfect Strangers," Daily Variety reports.

The script will be written by Jon Bokenkamp, whose credits include "Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows."

'FIRE' IT UP: "American Psycho" star Christian Bale is in talks to star in "Reign of Fire," an apocalyptic tale about an England overrun by fire-breathing dragons, The Hollywood Reporter says. Bale will play the leader of the surviving earthlings.

SPIDEY SINGS A NEW TUNE: Don't expect that catchy TV theme song for the "Spider-Man" flick. Cinescape.com reports today that Danny Elfman, the composer who also gave the "Batman" franchise a new sound, will score the new Sam Raimi adaptation.

  • ROLE CALL: Julianne Moore Evolves

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 22, 2000 -- "Evolution" is starting to evolve. Julianne Moore and Orlando Jones are in the final stages of negotiations to appear in the Ivan Reitman comedy with David Duchovny, Daily Variety reports. Seann William Scott ("Road Trip") also has signed up to appear in the film about a group of misfits who encounter an alien organism that lands in the New Mexico desert.

GERE UP: Richard Gere and "Arlington Road" director Mark Pellington have committed to "The Mothman Prophecies," a film revolving around the real-life paranormal activities that took place in West Virginia in the late 1960s.

BRUCKHEIMER'S 'BLACK SHEEP': Walt Disney Co. has given a thumbs-up to the Jason Richman-written action comedy "Black Sheep," Variety also reports. Jerry Bruckheimer ("Coyote Ugly") will produce, with possible directing by Jon Turteltaub ("Phenomenon").

  • ROLE CALL: Julia Does Revolution

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 15, 2000 – Julia Roberts revoluntonizes?! The Hollywood Reporter says today that Revolution Studios, headed by former Disney top brass Joe Roth, has bought the tentatively titled "Project 3," a psycho thriller that would star Julia Roberts.

Directed by Gore Verbinski, who worked with Roberts on the upcoming "The Mexican," the film is said to be similar to the story of "Gaslight," where a man tries to drive his wife insane.

SPIKE TV: Director Spike Lee will direct "A Huey P. Newton Story" for BET cable channel. The TV flick, starring Roger Guenveur Smith in the title role, will chronicle the life of Smith, the late co-founder of the Black Panther Party.

Before this, Lee has directed one other project for television, "Freak" with John Leguizamo for HBO in 1998.

  • Melanie Does Julia? No Way!

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 25, 2000 – True or not, certain tidbits are just too good (or too weird) for us to pass up. So, when we read a story today on ShowBizIreland.com -- a Web site covering the business of the movies in, um, Ireland -- saying that Melanie Griffith -- who, we believe, bears little resemblance to Julia Roberts -- will reportedly play (yes) Julia Roberts in an upcoming film, we had to check it out.

"The Limo Man" is based on the true-life encounter between Roberts and celebrity limousine chauffeur Mick Devine, who met in July 1991 after the "Pretty Woman" woman called for his services at 2 a.m., and asked him to pick her up from a hotel after she had just broken up with ex-beau Kiefer Sutherland.

The Irish site claims Griffith’s agent confirmed the casting. But, needless to say, we didn't believe it. So we called Robin Baum, Griffith's publicist, to find out. It

  • Julia and Ben on the Rocks?

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 1, 2000 -- It isn’t easy living down a bad reputation, and recent reports aren’t helping the "Runaway Bride," Julia Roberts.

New York magazine is reporting that Roberts hasn’t necessarily been very lovey-dovey with boyfriend/actor Benjamin Bratt. In fact, the magazine says they haven’t seen each other in quite some time.

As you might remember, the "Pretty Woman" and "Runaway Bride" starrer has a track record of leaving her men in the dust. She dumped fiancé Kiefer Sutherland for "Speed II" hunk Jason Patric, and her marriage to country singer Lyle Lovett was short-lived at best.

She’s in Mexico, filming her latest flick, "The Mexican." He’s relatively nearby, filming "Miss Congeniality" in Texas, yet neither one has taken the time to visit the other on their sets, the magazine reports.

But if you ask their reps, nothing can be further from

  • Fair Julia Is Queen of Hollywood

HOLLYWOOD, July 26, 2000 -- Who’s the fairest of them all? According to Industry analyst James Ulmer, it’s the Pretty Woman with the (sometimes) long, curly red locks. A Georgia peach by the name of Julia Fiona Roberts tops Ulmer’s Y2K list of the 200 hottest actors and actresses in show business. His roster is due out in book form, titled "James Ulmer’s Hollywood Hot List: The Complete Guide to Star Power," in the fall.

The only other woman to crack the Top 20 is the recently single Meg Ryan, who clocks in at No. 8.

Occupying the No. 2 through No. 7 spots between Roberts and Ryan are Hollywood heavy-hitters Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis, John Travolta and Brad Pitt. Leonardo DiCaprio and Will Smith round out the Top 10.

Among Ulmer’s criteria in determining the Hot List are bankability, professionalism, willingness to travel and promote, acting

  • EXTRA: 'Cybersquatter' Still Loves Julia

HOLLYWOOD, June 2, 2000 -- When he started juliaroberts.com a year and a half ago, all Russell Boyd wanted to do was pay tribute to America's favorite $20-million-per-picture woman. But on Friday, the 34-year-old systems analyst from Princeton, N.J., was deemed a "cybersquatter" by the United Nations and ordered to surrender his Web address to the highest paid actress in Hollywood, without so much as a thank you.

A case of an ungrateful star stomping on an admiring fan? Or a greedy Internet entrepreneur getting his comeuppance for trying to hold Roberts' own name hostage?

Probably neither. Roberts, who took her case to the World Intellectual Property Organization (the UN's trademark agency) in Geneva, Switzerland, is just one of many stars and other famous people who are trying to win back their names from other people who have beaten them to the punch and registered the

  • Now Showing: Julia Roberts' Cleavage

    "ERIN BROCKOVICH" PREMIERE

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 17, 2000 -- It's official: Media wags can't stop talking about Julia Roberts and her uh, um, well ... breasts.

"Erin Brockovich" See, the thing is that Julia shows a little more than we're all accustomed to seeing of her in "Erin Brockovich," the new Steven Soderbergh movie opening today, in which our star plays a small-town divorced mother who wages environmental-lawsuit war against a big, evil corporation. And, oh, Julia's character favors halter tops.

Inquiring minds (ours) wanted to know. Precisely how many journalists are obsessed with Julia's latest development? And, how are the stylebook-bound reporter types referring to the, uh, chest area of America's most popular woman?

Hollywood.com enlisted the help of Lexis-Nexis, the online repository of newspaper articles from around the world (actu

  • Julia's on Top

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 19, 2000 -- Julia Roberts was worth her weight in box office gold this weekend as Universal's opening of "Erin Brockovich" topped the chart with more than $28 million. The R-rated dramatic comedy, co-financed by Universal and Columbia (which is releasing it internationally), kicked off to a perky estimated $28.21 million at 2,847 theaters ($9,910 per theater).

Its per-theater average was the highest for any film playing in wide release this weekend.

"Steven Soderbergh and our filmmaking partners Jersey Films made a terrifically entertaining film that both critics and audiences have embraced," Universal Distribution President Nikki Rocco said Sunday morning.

"The combination of Julia Roberts, the No. 1 female star working in movies today, with this amazing story about a plain-speaking, working-class woman who takes on the big guys is ab

  • ROLE CALL: Julia Eyes 'The Mexican'

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 2, 2000 -- Never underestimate Julia Roberts' clout.

Daily Variety reports that the actress is showing interest in the action-comedy "The Mexican" and is considering taking the female lead. The pretty woman's possible involvement in the $10 million dollar project is indelibly breathing renewed life into the formerly lackluster project, which saw the joint departure of "Fight Club" helmer David Fincher and megastar Brad Pitt early in its pre-production phrase.

The effect of Robert's decision goes far beyond than just one star billing for the flick. Variety reports that many Hollywood insiders predict that Roberts' move might very well reignite Pitt's interest in recommitting to the male lead.

The flick is about a seasoned criminal who hunts down a legendary cursed pistol in Mexico while being pressured to change his evil ways by his girl
