  • Dr. Laura's Talk Show Blues

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 4, 2000 -- If you think the business of talk shows is easy, just take a look at Dr. Laura Schlessinger.

Plagued by protests, bad publicity and weak showings since its inception, the titular radio personality's eponymous TV talk show "Dr. Laura" has once again come under fire.

The New York Post says that the talk show host has been reportedly planting fake guests on her show. One such mole, the tab says, was allegedly Dr. L's researcher who had appeared on the show twice (and two days in a row, no less) but as different people.

The Post was apparently tipped off by someone from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation who watched the two shows and saw through the disguise.

Paramount, the show's producers, has remained quiet on the accusations.

  • Dr. Laura Debuts Quietly

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 12, 2000 -- Call it Dr. Laura Schlessinger light. The controversial talk-radio host was nothing like her razor-tongued self when her daytime TV talk show debut Monday. Known for lashing out at the gay community, calling homosexuality "deviant," Dr. Laura took a much safer path.

    Her topic? "Teens and Drugs."

But that didn’t stop a group of activists who gathered outside Paramount Studios in Hollywood, where the show is tapped, to chant slogans such as "Two-four-six-eight, Schlessinger is full of hate."

Monday’s show was far from her typical heated banter, too. Her guests included teenagers, whom at one time or presently smoke pot, and their parents. And get this: They were all well dressed and polite. There was also a representative for a company that markets drug tests for parents to use on their kids.

A 17-year-old was tested on the show

  • TV STUFF: Dr. Laura After Dark

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 8, 2000 -- Apparently, Dr. Laura Schlessinger is just too hot for daytime television.

Or better yet, too cold. The conservative talker's eponymous syndicated TV talk show has been bumped into the wee hours of night from its original daytime slot in seven major cities, CBS announced Tuesday.

"The program got off to a slow start ... and has since seen further ratings erosion," the network said in a statement.

A CBS spokesman told Reuters that all seven stations would be moving "Dr. Laura" to the 2 a.m. slot.

'DR. LAURA' PARODY MIA: Daily Variety reports that an episode of the NBC hit comedy "Frasier" has been skipped in syndication this year. The specific episode in question features Christine Baranski in a guest role that openly parodies aforementioned daytime (now graveyard) talk show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger.

  • TV STUFF: Dr. Laura Apologizes to Gays

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 11, 2000 -- Dr. Laura says she's sorry. The controversial radio and TV talk show host, aka Laura Schlessinger, apologized on Monday to gays and lesbians for "poorly chosen" words she said have been perceived as hate, The Associated Press reports.

"On the Day of Atonement (the Jewish Yom Kippur holiday), Jews are commanded to seek forgiveness from people we have hurt," Schlessinger, who is Jewish, said in a newspaper ad. "I deeply regret the hurt this situation has caused the gay and lesbian community."

The ad, signed by Schlessinger, was included in a Gay Hollywood special edition of Daily Variety today. The special edition examines gays and lesbians in the entertainment industry.

Schlessinger has referred to homosexuality as a "biological error" and "deviant."

While Schlessinger apologized for the hurt her comments have caused, the good d
