HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 31, 2000 -- The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released new guidelines limiting the methods in which film companies may campaign for Academy Awards. Ric Robertson, an Academy executive administrator, said in a press release that the guidelines are similar to last year's, with most of the changes meant to clarify existing rules. One specific change from last year, though is that a member cannot be sent both a videotape and a DVD of the same motion picture. The Academy's communications director, John Pavlik, told Hollywood.com that the guideline was created for two reasons: It allows studios to send out only one version of a motion picture, and the guideline conveys that the purpose of sending out motion pictures to members is not to build up their movie collections. Violations of the Academy's guidelines are generally punish

HOLLYWOOD, June 27, 2000 -- Back in the days when KISS was a renegade rock 'n' roll band, it was rumored that their name was an acronym for Knights In Satan's Service. But after the much-publicized KISS auction last weekend at Paramount Studios here in Hollywood, we can think of better ones: "Krap Inc. Salvage Sale," or maybe "Kapitalists In Self-Service." And we're sure of at least one thing: Gene Simmons never throws away anything. Anything. Let's say you're a KISS fan, a real die-hard. OK, how much would you pay for a New Year's greeting card that Simmons once received from bandmate Paul Stanley? A card imprinted with the saying, "Is it my imagination, or is life getting better?" and bearing Paul's handwritten inscription: "Dear Gene, hope you like these. Thanks for another great year. -- Paul." Well, somebody from Baton Rouge paid $850 for it. That's 850 bucks, not $

Today's Dally Morning News reports that Rimes filed suit against her pa, Wilbur C. Rimes, and her ex-manager, Lyle Walker, on May 2 in a Lone Star state court. The complaint alleges that the two men conspired to skim her earnings for five years. Wilbur split with LeAnn's mom in 1997. Wilbur and Walker were shown the door as her managers in December. An attorney for Wilbur calls Rimes' allegations "completely false."
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 12, 2000 -- Is this a job for Puff Daddy? To be sure, Jennifer Lopez is short a leading man after Aaron Eckhart ("Erin Brockovich") fled the actress's "Angel Eyes" just one month before the romantic comedy was to go before cameras. Today's Daily Variety says Eckhart was unhappy with the script. Nothing like having standards to mess up a perfectly good plan. THEY ALSO WISH PIGS WOULD FLY: A Romanian-based film company said today that when it said Leonardo DiCaprio was going to star in its sci-fi flick "Librium" it meant the statement as "a wish, not a certainty." "ERIN BROCKOVICH" PREMIERE SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 17, 2000 -- It's official: Media wags can't stop talking about Julia Roberts and her uh, um, well ... breasts. "Erin Brockovich" See, the thing is that Julia shows a little more than we're all accustomed to seeing of her in "Erin Brockovich," the new Steven Soderbergh movie opening today, in which our star plays a small-town divorced mother who wages environmental-lawsuit war against a big, evil corporation. And, oh, Julia's character favors halter tops. Inquiring minds (ours) wanted to know. Precisely how many journalists are obsessed with Julia's latest development? And, how are the stylebook-bound reporter types referring to the, uh, chest area of America's most popular woman? SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 17, 2000 -- A movie-rumor Web site that posted a purported list of Oscar nominations before they were officially announced -- and which later proved to be largely inaccurate -- could face a lawsuit for interfering with the rigid security surrounding the Academy Awards. It was not immediately clear against whom the Academy was mulling legal action, but Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences spokesman John Pavlik told Reuters: "I think that if, in fact, something comes along that shows laws were broken, we will take action against whoever broke them. This is a serious kind of thing for us. We don't like the suggestion that our secrecy can be violated." The Academy also said today it had solved the mystery as to where the phony Oscars list, which appeared Monday on the popular Ain't It Cool News Website (www.aint-it-cool-news.com), came from.
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 15, 2000 -- Christina Ricci, star of such gloomy fare as "Sleepy Hollow" and "Buffalo '66," will put her experiences to work in her latest project. Daily Variety says the indie siren has agreed to grapple with depression as the star and co-producer of a big-screen version of "Prozac Nation." The movie adapts Elizabeth Wurtzel's 1994 autobiographical account of her lifelong bout with the disease. The New York writer graduated from Harvard and became a well-known journalist, but her crippling feelings once caused her to attempt suicide. Prozac, she said, was the lifesaver that helped her reshape her life. Ricci's interest in the book sparked the development of the project. The film's set to begin shooting May 15 with "Insomnia's" Erik Skjoldbjaerg at the helm. BOOB TUBE REDUX: Ex-"Roseanne" star John Goodman can't resist a return t
HOLLYWOOD, June 9, 2000 -- Nevermind Angelina Jolie. The biggest scene-stealer in "Gone in 60 Seconds" may well be Eleanor, the revving classic Mustang that Nicolas Cage is so bent to get his hands on in the car-chase flick. But despite its cool look and tough muscles, the 1967 Shelby Mustang GT 500 is still no match to its same-named predecessor, the 1973 Mach 1 Mustang in the original "Gone in 60 Seconds" -- the 1974 B-type flick that's more familiar to drive-ins than mutliplexes. Written, directed and produced on a shoe-string budget by H.B. ("Toby") Halicki (who also played the lead), the original flick was a true do-it-yourself effort in that the whole production -- a production featuring 93 cars (and 100 wrecks) -- was solely financed by the writer-director-producer. The chases and clashes -- which prominently figured in the plot about a car burglar alternately running fro

Today, Spade appeared before Anderson in closed chambers to enter his guilty plea, Channel 9 reported.
Oscar buzz continues at the box office this weekend as a few of the year's most highly touted films open in both wide and limited release. Five years ago, Darabont came to prominence with another prison-bound tale by King called "The Shawshank Redemption." That movie, which frequently tops lists of the most popular films of all time, garnered seven Academy Award nominations. Other Oscar hopefuls include the limited releases "Cradle Will Rock" and "The Cider House Rules." "Cradle," directed by Tim Robbins and featuring an all-star cast, details the events of New York City's art scene in the 1930s.
