HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 1, 2000 -- Is he the new Howard Cosell? Or the same old, arcane reference-spewing, obtuse comedian Dennis Miller? It might be too early to say, but the former "Saturday Night Live" guy made his "Monday Night Football" debut as a gridiron color commentator, er, Monday night, helping broadcaster Al Michaels and former NFL quarterback Dan Fouts call the shots in the pre-season Hall of Fame game. Today, the reviews are in. How did he do? "The sports world, as we know it, has imploded," says Bill Plaschke, a Los Angeles Times sports columnist. "Tradition has been trashed, values have vanished." But Plaschke says that's a good thing ultimately. He liked Miller's references to the pope, his crotch jokes, his jokes about Jack Lord's hair and mentions of the Sword of Damocles. "Time flew. The boring became bearable," is how Plaschke puts it. HOLLYWOOD, May 19, 2000 -- Russell Crowe was good in "The Insider," yeah. But it wasn't until he chopped off a bunch of people's heads in "Gladiator" that Hollywood decided that the guy's worth the money. Today's Daily Variety says Crowe, 35, will ask for $15 million for his next picture -- just shy of Jim Carrey's $20 million neighborhood. So what's his next picture? Well, according to The Hollywood Reporter, he's in talks to star in Ron Howard's "A Beautiful Mind," a biopic about a math genius with schizophrenia. Be sure to bring the entire family.
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 5, 2000 -- Will Jet Li kick Keanu Reeves' sorry butt? Probably just wishful thinking on our part, but today's Hollywood Reporter does give us hope. The paper says action star Li (late of "Romeo Must Die") is about to be wooed by the filmmakers behind "The Matrix" to appear in the hit movie's upcoming two sequels. Reeves, for one, is already set to wear black again in the films (dubbed "The Matrix 2" and "The Matrix 3"). So are his cohorts from the original flick -- Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss. WHO IS NUMBER 6? Patrick McGoohan, who in the 1960s starred in the cool, paranoiac and slightly incomprehensible British sci-fi series "The Prisoner," is set to executive produce a big-screen version for Universal Pictures. Today's Daily Variety says Simon West ("Con Air") will direct. No word yet on a star. WE'VE COME A LONG WAY, BAB
