The project will begin production Jan. 15. 'SEA' BOUND: "Whatever It Takes" heartthrob James Franco will play the son of Robert De Niro in the thriller "City by the Sea," the Reporter says. The story is about a police officer (De Niro) who discovers that his son is a killer. MO' FRANCO: In other James Franco-as-a-son news today: The Reporter
HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 20, 2000 -- Diamonds really are a girl’s best friend. Just ask Madonna. Marriage, on the other hand, is another matter. The Queen of Music is delighted about the large diamond ring she was given by her boyfriend, British director Guy Ritchie. “I had absolutely no idea,” Madonna told US Weekly in an interview to be published Friday. “I never liked big rocks on my finger. Well, I do now.” But queried about whether a holiday wedding was in the cards, as predicted by British tabloids, Madonna replied: “I wouldn’t say it’s an engagement ring, at least not right now. We talk about marriage, but we can’t decide whether it’s something that’s necessary.” Ritchie, 31, gave Madonna the rock on the day she came home with new baby Rocco, also the same day as Madonna’s 42nd birthday. Madonna, who divorced actor Sean Penn in 1989 after four year
HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 18, 2000 -- This from the They Deserve Each Other files: TV journalist Geraldo Rivera and TV poster girl Darva Conger are dating. The New York Daily News reports that the former “Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire?” bride and Rivera, also a multimillionaire, must wait for him to finalize his divorce from C.C. Dyer, his betrothed of 19 years, before the new couple wed. Neither party has commented to the Daily News about their alleged togetherness.
HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 18, 2000 -- The four-year love affair is over. Daily Variety reports today that MTV has canceled the late-night series “Loveline” after a four-year run. MTV gave no reason for deciding not to renew the advice show for another 15 episodes. “Loveline,” hosted by Adam Corolla, Dr. Drew Pinsky and Catherine McCord, has accumulated 369 half-hours since its MTV debut in November 1996.THE $10 MILLION MAN: Recent Emmy winner James Gandolfini has signed a renegotiated contract that will give him $10 million for the next two seasons of the HBO hit drama “The Sopranos,” Variety says. The deal signed last week is said to include future obligations as actor and producer in television series for “Sopranos” partners Brad Gray Television and HBO. UPN’S CASE OF ‘RAGE:’ UPN has picked up six hours of the reality series “Road Rage,” a mix of demolition derb
HOLLYWOOD, July 27, 2000 -- We have reached Ground Zero. Friday at 9 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, Kathie Lee Gifford makes her final appearance as host of "Live! With Regis & Kathie Lee," and thus ends a chapter in daytime TV history. Do we care? Of course we do. Because for the past 12 years, Kathie Lee has arguably been America's most intimate celebrity. She's shared with us her good times and bad times, the fluctuations in her fertility cycle, her kids' growing pains (and potty habits), her life with adultering sporstcaster-husband Frank Gifford, and her oft-unpopular business ventures. "The I Hate Kathie Lee Gifford Book" But, despite her "I'm-just-a-normal-person" visage, Kathie Lee Gifford has received the kind of mega-exposure only afforded to uber-celebrities. At one time or another her face has loomed over Wal-Mart shoppers buying her modestly priced
HOLLYWOOD, July 14, 2000 -- Love is in the air for Heath Ledger and George Clooney. Or so says the rumor mill. Gossip columnist Jeannette Walls of MSNBC says that Heath "The Patriot" Ledger and "The Spy Who Shagged Me" starlet Heather Graham have hooked up, baby. But that’s only half the story, Walls surmises. Graham and actor-director Ed Burns called it quits just last month. Burns reportedly dumped Graham to chase after his ex -- the ex-Mrs. Jim Carrey -- Lauren Holly. And Aussie Adonis Ledger told Vanity Fair in its August edition that’s he’s single now, and that his last relationship, with model Christina Cauchi, was crushed by his red-hot-and-rising career. Representatives for Ledger and Graham have denied the rumors, of course. The duo are currently in the Czech city of Prague, shooting upcoming and separate films. OK, enough of that. Luc

NBC’s Oval Office drama "The West Wing" nabbed a field-best six nominations for the 16th annual Television Critics Association Awards, including best drama, best new program of the year and program of the year. Bowed last season, the Martin Sheen-led rookie drama has poised itself as one of the major contenders to look for in the upcoming Emmy balloting race. Other notable nominees include Fox’s family comedy "Malcolm in the Middle" (with four nods, including one for best comedy), HBO’s mob hit "The Sopranos" (with three mentions, including best drama) and NBC’s recently axed "Freaks and Geeks" (with two noms). Overall, NBC led the networks in total nominations with 12 nods. Winners will be announced July 15 during a ceremony at the Ritz-Carlton Huntington Hotel & Spa in Pasadena, Calif. Here’s
HOLLYWOOD, June 2, 2000 -- When he started juliaroberts.com a year and a half ago, all Russell Boyd wanted to do was pay tribute to America's favorite $20-million-per-picture woman. But on Friday, the 34-year-old systems analyst from Princeton, N.J., was deemed a "cybersquatter" by the United Nations and ordered to surrender his Web address to the highest paid actress in Hollywood, without so much as a thank you. A case of an ungrateful star stomping on an admiring fan? Or a greedy Internet entrepreneur getting his comeuppance for trying to hold Roberts' own name hostage? Probably neither. Roberts, who took her case to the World Intellectual Property Organization (the UN's trademark agency) in Geneva, Switzerland, is just one of many stars and other famous people who are trying to win back their names from other people who have beaten them to the punch and registered the
HOLLYWOOD, May 22, 2000 -- It's only after a period of intense mourning that the process of healing can begin. And so now with the last trace of despair completely gone, we can finally start asking a question we were once unable to face: Namely, how could Jennifer Love Hewitt's first starring series, "Time of Your Life," be shoved off the air for good? What, we dare ask, caused a budding starlet - once a shining light for a generation of "Party of Five," "Can't Hardly Wait" and "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" viewers -- to lose her dominance? What happened? "What happened? Well, [the show] launched weak, and just got weaker. Within five weeks, it hit low. Fox needs to protect 'Ally McBeal,'" reporter Mark Penton of Tvindustry.com tells Hollywood.com. "'Time' was pulling in a third less than 'Melrose Place' a year before. And 'Ally McBeal' is a crowning jewel -- y
HOLLYWOOD, May 18, 2000 -- Can they do this to Jennifer Love Hewitt? Can they deprive a leading Generation Y icon of her weekly network TV outlet? Apparently so. Fox today announced its new fall schedule, and Hewitt's show -- the "Party of Five" spinoff "Time of Your Life" -- wasn't on it. The network won't tell you what that means. We will. She got axed. Oh, the fates they can be cruel. Was it only yesterday -- or perhaps 15 minutes ago -- that the one they call Love was the leading lady of her era? Oh, well. Next! Overall, Fox will introduce nine new series, including "The X-Files" spinoff, "The Lone Gunmen;" a new (untitled) drama from Writer Inc. Michael Crichton; a new school drama from Producer Inc. David E. Kelley, "Boston Public;" and "The $treet," one of those young-people-today dramas that networks think are really cool until the

SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 2, 2000 -- It seems like only a 100 years ago that the American public seemed to truly, deeply care about Jennifer Love Hewitt. Hoping that the Love affair (wink, wink) can be sparked again, Fox has decided to relaunch the starlet's struggling series, "Time of Your Life," this summer. Unused episodes of the largely unseen "Party of Five" spinoff will be unspooled beginning June 14. No word yet on whether the show will be brought back for a second season. BOYBAND DILEMMA: Hope you're not hooked on "Making the Band," ABC's experiment in "Real World"-style storytelling (the story in this case being the hatching of another Backstreet Boys-esque boyband). The network's pulling the Friday night series effective now. It won't return until after the May sweeps. Same goes for "Talk to Me," the new (and likely late) Kyra Sedgwick sitcom which debuted on A
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 28, 2000 -- First Coca-Cola, then McDonald's and now the Teletubbies. It's official -- everything's going Russia. The British Broadcasting Corp. -- the United Kingdom's network behemoth that owns the rights to the phenomenal pre-schooler show -- has confirmed today that it has wrapped a deal with Russian state broadcaster RTR, which allows all 365 episodes of the Teletubbies to air in Russia beginning in September. "Teletubbies" For those that haven't been touched by the magic of Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa or Po, the Teletubbies first came to fame in 1997 as a children's show in England specifically designed to target the (once uncharted) demographic of 1-year-olds. The brainchild of creators Anne Wood and Andy Davenport, the show's concept was said to be an educational one that teaches kids how to think, learn and listen -- all from wa
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 21, 2000 -- Jennifer Love Hewitt joins the adult race today, reaching the ripe-old, legal-drinking age of 21. Hewitt will, presumably, display some very adult-like maturity in the forthcoming ABC biopic "The Audrey Hepburn Story," in which she portrays the late actress-turned-humanitarian, a role that departs from Hewitt's usual angst-ridden (and stalker-pursued) TV and film roles. The real Audrey Hepburn, by the way, was 25 when "Sabrina" was released, 28 when "Funny Face" came out, 32 when "Breakfast at Tiffany's" was released and 34 when "My Fair Lady" premiered. Good to know Jennifer's doing her best to catch up. MEA CULPA: Back on the job after a nasty illness sidelined him for more than a month, Miramax honcho Harvey Weinstein has this to say: Blame me.
