DreamWorks said Monday that it is re-editing scenes in it upcoming The Time Machine in which moon rocks rain down on Manhattan.
It took me several days to process my reaction to "Man on the Moon," the Andy Kaufman biopic starring Jim Carrey. Having been a huge fan of Kaufman since his earliest TV appearances, I was the target audience for this film, and -- having liked both previous screen bios written by the talented team of Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski ("Ed Wood" and "The People Vs. Larry Flynt") -- I was primed. And I liked the film. I had a wonderful time, relishing Jim Carrey's letter-perfect re-creations of Kaufman's stage persona and being moved by the film's bittersweet finale. Nonetheless, at "Man on the Moon"'s conclusion, the first thing I said to my wife (also a Kaufman fan) was, "I really liked that, but I'm not sure it's a good movie." She agreed, noting that viewers coming in cold -- unschooled in Kaufmania -- might well be bewildered, even bored. "Man on th
"The Wedding Planner" was still living happily ever after in first place this weekend. The PG-13-rated romantic comedy from Columbia Pictures and Intermedia Films continued to show great legs in its second week with a shapely estimated $11.0 million (-19%) at 2,785 theaters (theater count unchanged; $3,950 per theater). Its cume is approximately $28.2 million. "Down 19%. You couldn't hope for better than that," Sony Pictures Entertainment worldwide marketing & distribution president Jeff Blake said Sunday morning."It's turning out absolutely the best you could have possibly hoped for -- number one two weeks in a row and Valentine's weekend coming up and Presidents' holiday after that. We certainly now are believers that we'll be in excess of $50 million (in domestic theaters). This is a very profitable picture for both us and Intermedia." Jere Hausfater, pr
HOLLYWOOD, Mar. 5, 2001 -- Napster voluntarily began filtering out copyright-protected material from its site at around 1 a.m. this morning, a mere hour short of the self-imposed deadline announced on Friday. The filtering comes after the company offered to block user access to select titles presented by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), music publishers, and musicians who oppose the service, including Metallica and Dr. Dre. Although the RIAA and its allies asked that 5,600 titles be excluded, only a few had been filtered at press time. E-mails and calls to Napster today were unanswered, but MSNBC reports that the songs blocked today had been earmarked for removal from Napster's network prior to Friday's announcement. Before the filtering took effect, it was business as usual on the site, with songs being traded freely and heavily this past weekend. HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 26, 2000 -- The King of Pop is getting ready to moonwalk into the new millennium. According to Fox News, Michael Jackson's new studio album is planned for release in March of next year. Jackson's record label, Sony, has apparently already heard six new songs by the hitmaker as well as previewed other songs written for the album. The as-yet-untitled album will be produced by a diverse set of talents including R. Kelly, Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, Teddy Riley (who produced previous Jackson albums) and the Gloved One himself. Jackson has also revealed that he might be reuniting with his famous brothers in the near future to record some new songs, but no date has yet been set. Jackson's "Thriller" is one of the biggest-selling albums in music history, and his hits include "Beat It," "Billie Jean," "Bad" and "You Are Not Alone."
