Continued cutbacks at ABC News and the recent decision to move 20/20 from its long-established slot on Friday nights to Wednesdays (and to take it off the air entirely during the football season beginning in November) represent "something of a new reality" to the news division, ABC anchor Peter Jennings told Monday's New York Times.
As part of a continuing investigation into allegations that major Indian crime figures had laundered money through film producers in Bollywood, film star Salman Khan was questioned by authorities in Mumbai Wednesday, presumably about the payments he received for appearing in the film Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, which police say was financed by an Indian crime lord now living in Pakistan.
A judge put off a hearing Monday for Robert Downey Jr. on charges of possession of cocaine and prescription drug Valium because the actor last week checked into rehab after another drug-related arrest. His court appearance is now scheduled for May 24.
Ally McBeal producer David E. Kelley has decided his generosity to actor Robert Downey Jr. has expired: Kelley fired Downey from the show following the actor's drug arrest on Tuesday.
HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 23, 2001 -- Safety agency Cal/OSHA slapped 20th Century Fox Television fines of more than $41,000 as a result of a fatal accident that occurred on the set of "The X-Files" last year. Jim Engh, a 38-year-old grip, was killed, and six others on the show were injured in August when scaffolding they were standing on while setting up an L.A. shoot came in contact with high-power lines. In its ruling, Cal/OSHA determined that Fox committed three serious safety violations, including allowing employees to work near high-voltage lines without taking steps to guard them from danger and properly securing the scaffolding. The agency also said that Fox failed to post written code of safety practices on the job site. Fox has 15 days to contest the ruling.
HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 4, 2000 -- Legendary guitarist Chuck Berry, actor Clint Eastwood and tenor Angela Lansbury and ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov were also honored during the 2000 Kennedy Center Honors at a White House reception. ``Each in their own way, tonight's honorees have brought to a venerable art form a spark of the new and unexpected, and each has left it more modern, more brilliant and forever changed for the better,'' said Glenn Close, actor Goldie Hawn. Eastwood, who bucked the system by wearing a white tie at the black tie event, was regarded by Clinton as “a star for the ages.” The president also drew laughs from the audience with a political pun about Domingo, saying: “He has always been more than a voice, as a young man he prepared for later life in Washington as an amateur bullfighter.”
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 25, 2000 -- The jokes have paid off for Carl Reiner. The legendary funnyman joined the list of comedians honored with The Kennedy Center's Mark Twain Award on Tuesday. Reiner joins Richard Pryor and Jonathan Winters as the comedians that the Center has honored every year since 1997, Reuters reports. Fellow comedians Jerry Seinfeld, Steve Martin and Dick Van Dyke were among the celebrities who spoke at the event to pay homage to Reiner. The 78-year-old got his big break in 1950 on Sid Caesar's classic TV shows "Your Show of Shows" and "Caesar's Hour." Before that, he spent three years on Broadway. But he hit the big time on the small screen in 1961 when he created and wrote "The Dick Van Dyke Show." ``That was my baby. It was about my reality, my life, my ideas and thoughts. So I'm most proud of that,'' he told reporters before the Kennedy Center gala.
HOLLYWOOD, July 19, 2000 -- Some guys have to actually show up in court. Some other guys -- multi-millionaire rappers, to be specific -- can merely, as they say, "mail it in." On Tuesday, Eminem was arraigned by mail, whatever that means, on felony and misdemeanor charges related to a run-in with with a member of the Insane Clown Posse, a rival Detroit rap band. Eminem got a reprieve because he's currently on his "Up in Smoke" tour. No court date has been set yet, but one thing's certain: He isn't required to face judge and jury until after the concert tour ends, according to Entertainment Weekly Online. The latest album by the controversial rapper, whose wife, Kim Mathers, recently attempted suicide, and whose own mother is suing him, has been No. 1 on the Billboard album charts for seven consecutive weeks.
SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 4, 2000 -- Remember when going to an awards show was exciting, when winning one of them fancy paperweights was kinda cheesy cool? No? Then you must be Shania Twain. The country-pop diva sat out her third consecutive envelope-opening show Wednesday night, skipping the 35th Annual Academy of County Music Awards, even as she won the top prize -- named Entertainer of the Year. The Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill and Lonestar were the night's multiple winners, taking home two trophies each. In a twist, all managed to show up and accept their ACM hats in person. As for Twain? She was said to be living the life of good country people, albeit from her home in, um, Switzerland. (Little known fact: "Shania" is a name of Native American origins, meaning: "Let them eat cake.") This year, Twain previously was a no-show at the Grammys and the American Music Awards.
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 13, 2000 -- Looks like Halle Berry may have a few more days to contemplate on what to wear to court. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office dispelled rampant reports that Berry would be charged as soon as today in an alleged felony hit-and-run case. Officials with the prosecutor's office told Hollywood.com that they did not anticipate filing any charges against the 33-year-old actress -- at least not today anyway. Berry -- a no-show at Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards where she took honors (in abstentia) for her work in the HBO TV movie "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge" -- sustained a gash on her forehead during the two-car collision in West Hollywood, Calif., on Feb. 23. Crash investigators say they believe Berry fled the scene after running her rented Chevy Blazer into a passenger car motored by 27-year-old Hetal Raythatha.
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Mar. 24, 2000 -- Does an Oscar win equal prestige? Yes. How about a career jump-start? Gwyneth Paltrow Well, er ... Most of the time. For every, say, Kevin Spacey who escapes indie fringedom to Hollywood stardom after bagging an Oscar (for 1995's "The Usual Suspects"), there's a Marisa Tomei whose film career seems jinxed following a win (for 1992's "My Cousin Vinny"). That said, let's take a look at what the Oscar has done for last year's winners. Or they Marisa Tomeis or Kevin Spaceys? ROBERTO BENIGNI: After accomplishing the seemingly impossible task of sugarcoating the Holocaust with humor in "Life is Beautiful" and taking two Oscars (including the Best Actor trophy) for his feat, the larger-than-life Italian comic seems to be taking a smaller-than-life approach to things these days. After staking a supporting role in the comic-boo
Jerry Collins, the former singer for the disco group the Trammps, won't be club-hopping anytime soon. Collins, 44, was convicted Tuesday of attempted murder and aggravated assault in a Philadelphia court, according to The Associated Press.
No, seriously.
