    Three films should enjoy heaping portions of box office pie over a five-day Thanksgiving period in which the marketplace expands to $240 million or more.

    Which movie carves itself the biggest slice of holiday business remains to be seen, but insiders say the happy chart-topping trio will be Universal and Imagine Entertainment's "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas," last weekend's Number One film, and Buena Vista's two openings -- Disney's "102 Dalmatians" and Touchstone's "Unbreakable."

    Also likely to be well fed at the holiday box office buffet are two holdovers -- Paramount and Nickelodeon's "Rugrats In Paris" and Columbia's "Charlie's Angels."

  • TV STUFF: Fox Starts November Sweeps Strong

    HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 7, 2000 -- The audiences are still out there.

    With the season premieres of "The X-Files" and "The Simpsons" delivering strong ratings, the Fox network has taken the first Sunday of November Sweeps.

    According to preliminary ratings released by Nielsen, Sunday night's "The X-Files," which marked Robert Patrick's debut in the part-time Mulder era, ranked as the night's top program in the adult demographic.

    Topping Sunday night off was an equally impressive showing from "The Simpsons." Reaching its highest ratings since mid-Februrary, the animated series' season-premiere episode easily won its time slot.

    MAKING HEADLINES: Daily Variety reports that a telepic based on the murder of gay college student Matthew Shepard is under development at NBC. Titled "The Matthew Shepard Story," the two-hour drama will recount the circumstances surrounding the


  • November Sweeps: Too Close to Call

    HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 30, 2000 -- The November Sweeps is getting to be as close a race as the presidential election.

    According to an Associated Press report, NBC and ABC are virtually neck-and-neck heading toward the finish line of this sweeps period.

    And how close is the TV war?

    Dig this: Through Tuesday, NBC was only leading the ABC by one-tenth of a ratings point during November. And for the week that ended Sunday, the Peacock Network averaged 14.1 million viewers in primetime vs. the Alphabet Network's 13.7 million.

    The November Sweeps period, which is used to gauge advertising dollars for the next season, officially ends today.
