HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 31, 2000 -- The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released new guidelines limiting the methods in which film companies may campaign for Academy Awards.

Ric Robertson, an Academy executive administrator, said in a press release that the guidelines are similar to last year's, with most of the changes meant to clarify existing rules.

One specific change from last year, though is that a member cannot be sent both a videotape and a DVD of the same motion picture.

The Academy's communications director, John Pavlik, told Hollywood.com that the guideline was created for two reasons: It allows studios to send out only one version of a motion picture, and the guideline conveys that the purpose of sending out motion pictures to members is not to build up their movie collections.

Violations of the Academy's guidelines are generally punish

  • 2001 Oscars Poster Unveiled

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 18, 2001 -- This year's official commemorative Academy Awards poster by award-winning graphic designer Alex Swart was unveiled on Wednesday in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The Oscars print features a stacked, golden 2001 with an Oscar statuette standing in place of the 1. The statuette is supported by a sweeping ramp, moving upward to a line of larger statuettes emerging from a dark blue background.

This is Swart's first year as the designer of the Oscars poster. He previously designed the Academy's retrospective Best Picture poster and five of the Academy's annual reports. Swart won two Promax World Class Awards for his work on "The A

  • A 'Beauty' of an Oscar Night

LOS ANGELES, March 26, 2000 -- It wasn't exactly like the nosy newspaper said it was going to be, but as expected, "American Beauty" was the big winner, nabbing a field-best five Oscars, including Best Picture, at tonight's 72nd Annual Academy Awards.

    "American Beauty"

"Beauty" star Kevin Spacey was named Best Actor. The relatively no-name Hilary Swank ("Boys Don't Cry") bested Spacey's big-name co-star Annette Bening in the Best Actress race. The Wall Street Journal may have spoiled some of the surprises (including the Swank victory) with its controversial scoop-the-Oscars story Friday, but nobody here seemed to care.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was looking at the night's scorecard and realizing that, after "American Beauty" (which also claimed wins for Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Original Screenplay), the other big film was "The

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 26, 2000 -- Who said "Wild Wild West" didn't deserve any awards? On this Oscar weekend, the overblown, undercooked Will Smith action-comedy got exactly what it deserved: five Razzies.

"Wild Wild West" Yes, the critically unacclaimed summer smash was tops among all, um, winners at the 20th Annual Razzies, "dis-honoring" the worst in film, as they say. The bad-movie-watchin' folks at the Golden Raspberry Foundation unveiled their picks for '99 on Saturday.

They also released their choices for all-time baddies, slamming Sylvester Stallone as the worst actor of the 20th century and Madonna as worst actress for the same 100-year period. Stallone was selected on the strength, or lack thereof, of 17 films, from "Tango & Cash" to any "Rocky" movie after the third installment. It certainly pays to be an Academy Award winner-in more ways than one. Sure, there's the adulation and prestige one receives when winning an Oscar, but did you also know it could help you live longer?

According to a study published in Tuesday's Annals of Internal Medicine, Academy Award winners live nearly four years longer than those actors who have been nominated but haven't actually won the gold statuette.

  • One Step Closer to the Oscars

HOLLYWOOD, March 11, 2001 -- If you're in an Oscars office pool, take note.

At the 53rd Annual Directors Guild of America Awards Saturday night, Ang Lee was the top winner for his craftsmanship on the Chinese epic "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," a win that clearly pushed the talented director to the Oscar forefront. The DGA awards historically predict the Oscar-winning filmmaker; the organization has missed only four times in its 53-year history.

Lee's win certainly is not a surprise, since he also won the Golden Globe in January for best director, but Lee remains humbled by his honors. "Wow, this is too much. The timing is good. HOLLYWOOD, Mar. 1, 2001 -- The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences have sent out the ballots for the 73rd Annual Academy Awards - and this time, Academy voters, rest assured. You will get them on time.

In an attempt to avoid a repeat performance of last year, when several thousand ballots were mistakenly mixed in with bulk mail shipments and never sent out, the AMPAS took extra precautions when sending out the approximately 4,300 ballots to voting members on Wednesday. The organization mailed ballots to overseas members and those outside of California early-on Feb. 21.

Oscar organizers traditionally dropped off the ballots in canvas bags at the Beverly Hills post office. This year, according to AMPAS president Robert Rehme, "The post office …came and picked them up [from the Academy]."

Lost ballots were not the only problem the Academy experienced last year. A

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 11, 2001 -- If anything, it won't be a total and complete shutout for "Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 18, 2000 -- Are the Oscars going standup?

Looks that way now that yet another star comic has been tapped to host the 73rd Academy Awards.

Wild and crazy guy Steve Martin will host ABC’s live telecast from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on March 21, following past hosts and fellow comics Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg up to the podium.

“He’s everything!” says the show’s producer, Gil Cates, who made the surprise announcement today. “He’s a movie star, he’s funny, he’s classy, he’s literate -- he’ll be a wonderful host.”

  • Wanted: An Oscar Host

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 14, 2000 -- You loved his cameo-filled opening sequence, the side gags, his effervescent personality and, most of all, the way he made the usually tedious Oscar telecast fun and fast.

So who isn't going to miss Billy Crystal just a little bit at this year's Academy Awards?

"I like Billy Crystal. I know [he won't be hosting], but I'd like to talk to him about that because he is my favorite. I think he is the best," Jennifer Love Hewitt told Hollywood.com at the Fire and Ice Ball for cancer research on Tuesday night.

  • NEWSMAKERS: Billy Crystal to Oscars: Too Busy!

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 6, 2000 -- Hey, a man's got to make movies, too.

And that apparently is what seasoned emcee Billy Crystal is telling the Academy Awards people when it comes to hosting the gala event this year, the Associated Press says.

"I can't do it, you have to understand," Crystal told Fox News. "If everything goes according to plan, I'll just be finishing a new movie on March 22. I can't host the show five days later."

And how can you blame him. After all, the funnyman is getting to stretch His muscle in the high-profile comedy "America's Sweethearts" with Julia Roberts and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

But Crystal didn't exactly leave the Academy people high and dry, since he did jokingly nominate Jim Carrey, Jay Leno or David Letterman for the job.

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 30, 2000 -- The 19th century controversial writer Oscar Wilde was remembered and celebrated today in Paris with a memorial Mass, Reuters reports.

A graveside ceremony led by Wilde’s grandson Merlin Holland marked the 100th anniversary of the flamboyant writer’s death (Nov. 30, 1900).

Wilde was remembered for his scandalous wit and Irish charm. The writer came to fame in the 1880s for his controversial plays and poems which sharply criticized Victorian society. Also known for his homosexual lifestyle, his career took a sharp nosedive when he was arrested in 1895 and jailed for two years for “gross indecency.”

While in jail, however, Wilde later wrote that he deeply regretted wasting his talent on an extravagant lifestyle and related himself to the Biblical parable of the Prodigal Son –- the Gospel about forgiving a wayward son.

  • Foreign Films Swamp Oscar

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 21, 2000 -- As the folks at the Academy undoubtedly know by now, the world is a very big place.

But that's a good thing. The Academy of Motion Arts & Sciences has received a record 46 entries from all around the globe -- including countries such as the Philippines, Russia, Yugoslavia and first-time applicant Ecuador for Academy Award consideration in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

And what that means is a lot of viewing for the award committee, which will begin screening all submissions Dec. 1 before choosing five nominees.

Nominations will be announced Feb. 13 at the Academy. The Academy Awards ceremony will be take place March 25 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

  • Future Oscar Telecasts to Get a Bit More Animated

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 28, 2000 -- The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences board of governors has now created a separate category for animated features, the first new Oscar category added in two decades. According to the board, the statuettes could be handed out as early as March 2002.

As told to Variety, "Animators have been lobbying for inclusion in the Oscar race for years," an AMPAS spokesman said. "The past three years in particular have consisted of weighing the pros against the cons. It has been a long, drawn-out process and finally the board has managed to iron out a feasible proposal."

The Oscar will go to "the key creative talent most clearly responsible for the overall achievement" -- in other words, one individual who represents the entire production. Eligible features must be at least 70 minutes in length and can be in any form of animation styles including

  • Oscar Winner Takes His 'Orders'

HOLLYWOOD, July 19, 2000 -- Oscar winner Michael Caine has joined an all-star British cast in "Last Orders," with Australian Fred Schepisi set to direct, Daily Variety reports. The $12 million picture, an adaptation of Graham Swift’s Booker Prize-winning novel, is about a group of old friends who gather to fulfill a dying wish of one of their gang -- to carry his ashes from London to the sea.

Caine will be joined by Helen Mirren, Tom Courtenay, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone and David Hemmings.

Caine won the Best Supporting Oscar this year for "The Cider House Rules" and is a previous winner for "Hannah and Her Sisters."

CASTING HARRY: Despite assurances that Harry Potter will be played by a Brit, USA Today reports that at least one American actor, 10-year-old Liam Aiken ("Stepmom"), is being considered for the title role in the upcoming "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer

  • The Oscars ... Live From The Kodak Theater!

HOLLYWOOD, July 12, 2000 -- The Oscar theater has got a new name, and The Kodak Theater it will be. The Eastman Kodak Co. will pay $75 million over 20 years to rightfully brand its name on the new Oscar ceremony home that’s currently under construction in Hollywood. The theater is expected to finish in time for the Academy Awards show in 2002.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences -- who organizes the Oscars every year -- was not part of the negotiations and will not benefit financially from the Kodak naming rights deal.

"We’re glad it’s a name that shares our history in the Industry. It’s a historic name that is as old as the Oscar," John Pavlik, AMPAS spokesman, tells Hollywood.com.

  • EXTRA: The Case of Judy's MIA Oscar

HOLLYWOOD, June 26, 2000 -- Memo to all past and future Oscar recipients: After your star has faded, after you've spent your fortune and pawned all your silverware, don’t even think about selling that gold statue on your mantle. And remind your loved ones not to try selling it after you're dead.

Just ask Sid Luft, ex-manager and onetime husband (from 1952 to 1962) of the late Judy Garland, and he'll tell you how big a headache it is to get on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' hit list.

Luft was in court Friday, fending off an Academy lawsuit accusing him of trying to sell Garland's Oscar on the Web.

A Web site called Nate's Autographs (www.natesautographs.com) recently listed Garland's long-lost 1940 mini-Oscar statuette, which she received "for her outstanding performance as a screen juvenile" in "The Wizard of Oz," for sale. The auction, which ha

  • Oscars 2001: Plan Ahead Accordingly

HOLLYWOOD, June 20, 2000 -- We don't know who will win at next year's Academy Awards, but we do know where next year's Academy Awards will be held. All right, that sort of info isn't all that exciting -- but it is semi-interesting. To that end, please mark your Oscar calendars for March 25, 2001, at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium.

The 73rd annual ceremony -- to be held on that date -- will be the 10th at the Shrine. It also should be the last, considering the Academy hopes to have its own Hollywood theater open by 2002.

  • No Oscar For 'Mission: Imp'

HOLLYWOOD, June 16, 2000 – Memo to Hollywood: If you want to be eligible for an Oscar nomination, don't premiere your movie on the Internet. New rules approved this week by the board of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences say that any movie that's shown in Cyberspace before its theatrical debut will forfeit its eligibility for a golden statue.

The move comes in the wake of the dizzying growth of websites like atomfilms.com, reelshort.com, etc., that play original films on the 'net, and it emphasizes the Academy's "longstanding principle that its porvince is theatrical motion pictures, as distnct from pictures experienced as lone viewing," says spokesman John Pavlik.

"You're reading and hearding all sorts of things about producers trying new ways to exhibit and distribute their films. I guess for now this would only apply to short films, but tech is showing s

  • Oscars: The Final Tally

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 28, 2000 -- Now that the parties are over, the hangovers slept off, the million-dollar jewels returned to their owners, it's time to take final inventory of the winners and losers of Oscars 2000. WINNERS

Steven Spielberg Dreamworks: Sure, the studio took home the most statues (five), but the real story is that the Studio That Spielberg And Friends Built won Round 2 of what's turning into its annual bout with Miramax for the top Oscar prizes. You'll remember that the two neo-arch-rivals split the two top honors last year -- Spielberg took Best Director and Miramax's "Shakespeare in Love" got the Best Picture nod -- but this year, Dreamworks kicked the Weinstein brothers' butts in every category where they competed.

Warner Bros.: "The Green Mile" may have come away with zilch, but who cares? "The Matrix" was the second-biggest success story

  • TV STUFF: Oscar Ratings Bad, Not 'Titanic'

SANTA MONICA, Calif. March 27, 2000 -- Yes, the Oscars were inescapable Sunday night. How could they not be? They only ran for, like, 10 (well, four-plus) hours. Early estimates this morning say 78 million incredibly patient and tolerant individuals watched all, or part, of ABC's marathon Academy Awards broadcast. In the nation's biggest markets, the show -- which marked the return of host Billy Crystal and the crowning of "American Beauty" as Best Picture -- pulled a 31.7 rating. If that number holds up when the final stats are released, it'll mean the telecast was down 1 percent from 1999. And while that's not bad, that would still represent a 22 percent fall off from 1998's ceremony, otherwise known as the "Titanic" coronation.

Critical reaction to the telecast, meanwhile, was mixed -- as critical reaction is wont to be.

In the Washington Post, Tom Shales said that th

  • Oscar Voting: Take 2

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 23, 2000 -- Your last reminder: Final Oscar ballots are due today. For Hollywood.com's complete Oscar coverage go here. That's right, with all the news about lost ballots, found ballots, stolen Oscars, found Oscars, etc., we thought some people might be in a state of utter Oscar confusion. (Ballots, after all, were originally due back March 21, before all the madness.)

So here's the drill: Final Oscar ballots must be returned to the Los Angeles offices of PricewaterhouseCoopers by 5 p.m. PST.

PricewaterhouseCoopers will tabulate the results of the voting and place the winners' names in sealed envelopes. And PWC's tabulating partners Greg Garrison and Lisa Pierozzi will be the only two people who know the results of the voting until the night of the ceremony, otherwise known as Sunday.

All of this is contingent, of course, on the r

  • Oscar Hero to Get His Reward (and Tix to Show)!

LOS ANGELES, March 23, 2000 -- He's not getting an Oscar, but he is getting the booty. And a ticket to the main event to boot. For Hollywood.com's complete Oscar coverage, go here.

Willie Fulgear, the man who found 52 out of 55 stolen Oscars, was presented here today with a $50,000 reward for returning the MIA gold-plated statuettes, which he found while rummaging around a garbage bin.

"It feels good," said Fulgear, the 61-year-old self-employed scrap-metal dealer said at an afternoon press conference at Los Angeles Police Department headquarters, where he was proclaimed a “local hero.”

After the money, the other big question involving Fulgear was: So, is he getting his ticket to Sunday's Oscar ceremony?

The answer today from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences: Yes. In fact, Fulgear's getting two tickets: One for himself, and one for a gue

  • The Oscarheads Are Here!

LOS ANGELES, March 20, 2000 -- There are deadheads. And then there are Oscarheads. Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium

Call them fanatics, devotees, or even fools, but nothing -- neither puzzled stares, physical discomfort nor gusting wind -- is going to quell the insistent fervor of Oscar diehard fans. Don't believe? Just cruise down to the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium and witness the long row of tents, beach chairs, and sleeping bags neatly adorning the sidewalk. While construction crews began to erect public bleachers at the arrival area of the auditorium today, about a dozen Oscar enthusiasts from California to Germany hunkered down here in the hope of getting one of those first-come-first-serve seats for Sunday's ceremony.

As you make your way through the makeshift Oscar shantytown outside the Shrine, several questions pop into your head: (1) Why are these people her

  • Oscar: Found in Trash!

LOS ANGELES, March 19, 2000 - Memo to this year's Oscar nominees: If you win, don't forget to thank Willie Fulgear.

Oscar: Back in custody Fulgear is the 61-year-old man who solved the Oscar crime of the century, finding 52 of 55 purloined Academy Award statuettes around a Dumpster near a Food-4-Less discount grocery store late Sunday in a lower-middle-class neighborhood of Los Angeles, about five miles west of Downtown.

Los Angeles police, meanwhile, today announced here at a noon press conference, attended by the recently recovered (and unharmed) awards, that two longtime Roadway Express employees -- a truck driver and a loading dock worker -- had been arrested in connection with the case.

"The suspects told us they did it for profit, and they thought they would make money," Los Angeles Police Detective Marc Zavala said.

    Roadway Express is the shipp

  • New Oscar Twist!

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 21, 2000 -- The case of the stolen Oscars took a twist late this afternoon, when prosecutors declined to press charges against one of the men arrested in connection with the heist. Oscar The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office decided there was not sufficient evidence to pursue a case against Roadway Express employee Anthony Hart, 38, spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons tells Hollywood.com.

It's presumed Hart will be freed.

Still in custody, pending the posting of bail, is Lawrence Ledent. The truck driver, also a 38-year-old Roadway Express worker, pleaded innocent today to one count of grand theft. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 31.

Hart and Ledent were arrested Saturday. In a press conference Monday, police said the pair hatched an inside job to abscond with 55 Oscars after the trophies were shipped to an L.A.-are

  • Oscar: Found!

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 19, 2000 -- Who wants an Oscar? Apparently not the person or persons who dumped some near a Dumpster in the Koreatown section of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles police say that some of the MIA statuettes -- presumed stolen on about March 8 -- surfaced tonight near that trash heap. The find was reported at about 9:30 p.m. PST, officer Dan Cox told Hollywood.com.

It wasn't known exactly how many Oscars were now accounted for. A grand sum of 55 were reported missing by Academy officials.

On Friday, the shipping company responsible for the absconded Oscar shipment put up a $50,000 reward for the lost statues.

While Academy brass had vowed that the March 26 ceremonies would not be hindered by the loss, they made a point of noting that they did want their Oscars back.

Consider part of that wish granted.

  • Here's to the Oscar Nominees Who Lunch

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., March 13, 2000 -- You're within spitting distance of some of the world's biggest stars and movie personalities. You've got mere minutes to ask the right questions that will shed light on their feelings about what it's like to be nominated for an Oscar. Tom Cruise But here's the problem: You're corralled into a roomful of other reporters, who all want to ask the same questions. And some of their voices are louder than yours.

Welcome to the annual Oscar Nominees' Luncheon held today at the posh Beverly Hilton hotel, where Tom Cruise is on the menu.

"Tom, is this the weirdest role you've ever done in your life?" you ask, referring to that scurrilous Frank T.J. Mackey guy he plays in "Magnolia".

"Yes," Tom replies. Then he adds: "Hahahahahahahahaha!"

At a time of year when Hollywood is engrossed in awards ceremonies -- the SAGs, th

  • EXTRA: Are the Oscars Jinxed?

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 10, 2000 -- "Fight Club" wasn't within spitting distance of a Best Picture nomination. But to the organizers of the 2000 Oscars, macho soap salesman Brad Pitt is a winner. Brad Pitt The actor has signed up to be a presenter at the 72nd Annual Academy Awards, organizers announced today. Now, normally this sort of thing is no big deal -- it's a rather routine gesture for the biggest stars in Hollywood -- except for the fact Pitt reportedly had earlier declined the invite from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

And, oh yeah, it's the only good Oscar-related news the Academy has received all week. (If not, all year.)

Call it the millennium jinx. Call it coincidence. Call it a string of bad luck.

Whichever, it started early, on Valentine's Day, ironically. But love was not in the air when a popular Internet movie-gossip g

  • The Grinch Who Stole the Oscars?

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 9, 2000 -- Will journalistic curiosity steal the surprise from this year's Oscars? The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is freaked that an "assault" by The Wall Street Journal on the legendary, airtight security surrounding the Academy Awards could very well destroy any major surprises Oscar night on March 26.

    72nd Annual Academy Awards

In the never-ending quest for a scoop, the Journal has attempted to get advance winners for the 72nd Annual Academy Awards in six categories -- Best Picture, Best Director and the four acting awards -- by polling Academy members Feb. 24 through March 1.

In a letter sent to 4,800 Oscar voters this week, Academy President Robert Rehme says the Journal has "made the most concerted attempt in history to predetermine the outcome of our awards."

Rehme speculates that the newspaper somehow

  • Oscar Ballots in the Mail (Take 2)

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 8, 2000 -- Neither wind nor sleet nor an apparent boo-boo by the mailman will keep the Oscars from its appointed rounds.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences remailed the entire slate of 4,200 California-bound Oscar ballots to its stateside members Tuesday -- ending an odyssey (well, an annoying couple of days) that saw the powers that be behind Hollywood's most glamorous event obsessing over bulk-mail bins.

The new ballots will replace the ones that vanished after being mailed to California's Academy members March 1. (Another 1,000 voting members who live in New York and overseas received their ballots earlier.)

As of late Tuesday afternoon, about 1,000 of the missing ballots had been tracked down to the United States Postal Service regional distribution center in Bell, an industrial area south of Los Angeles. The remaining 3,000

  • Oscar Ballots: Lost ... and Found!

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 7, 2000 -- Neither wind nor sleet nor an apparent boo-boo by the mailman will keep the Oscars from its appointed rounds.

The Oscars Officials with the U.S. Postal Service in Los Angeles were searching high and low today for some 4,000 Academy Award ballots that vanished after being mailed to movieland voters Wednesday. That number represented four-fifths of all voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. More specifically, that number represented all California-based voters. (Another 1,000 voting members who live in New York and overseas received their ballots earlier.)

As of this afternoon, about 1,000 of the missing ballots had been tracked down to the USPS regional distribution center in Bell, an industrial area south of Los Angeles. The remaining 3,000 MIAs were (horror of horrors!) believed to be buried under thousa

  • TV STUFF: 'View' Gabber to Chat Up Oscars

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 6, 2000 -- "The View" gabber Meredith Vieira is soon going to have something new to gab about -- a view of the Oscar red carpet.

The newswoman turned morning TV chatty Cathy has been tapped to help anchor ABC's pre-show arrival coverage at the 72nd Annual Academy Awards on March 26 at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium.

Today's announcement from the Academy noted that Vieira will be "one of the arrivals show hosts," indicating she won't fly solo like Geena Davis did at last year's inaugural red-carpet watch. No word yet on who'll serve as Vieira's partner, although we're not putting our money on Joan Rivers.

The plan is for Vieira and company to pounce on A-listers and nominees as they do the celeb walk from the limo to the Shrine. On account of ABC's got an in with the Academy, the network's crew also will be allowed to roam the auditorium

  • Phony Oscar Leak Could Spur Lawsuit

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 17, 2000 -- A movie-rumor Web site that posted a purported list of Oscar nominations before they were officially announced -- and which later proved to be largely inaccurate -- could face a lawsuit for interfering with the rigid security surrounding the Academy Awards.

It was not immediately clear against whom the Academy was mulling legal action, but Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences spokesman John Pavlik told Reuters: "I think that if, in fact, something comes along that shows laws were broken, we will take action against whoever broke them. This is a serious kind of thing for us. We don't like the suggestion that our secrecy can be violated."

The Academy also said today it had solved the mystery as to where the phony Oscars list, which appeared Monday on the popular Ain't It Cool News Website (www.aint-it-cool-news.com), came from.

  • NEWSMAKERS: Partying with Oscar's Chosen

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 16, 2000 -- Where were you at 5:30 a.m. PST on Tuesday? If you're an Academy Award nominee, you were hounded by media anxious to get a first-hand reaction.

Michael Clarke Duncan and Haley Joel Osment had camera crews sitting with them to watch the nominations. While the 11-year-old "Sixth Sense" star, the third youngest Best Supporting Actor nominee ever, gave his gentlemanly "it's an honor to be nominated" sound bite, "The Green Mile's" Duncan, 42, whooped, hollered and sobbed in one breath, so excited that he couldn't remember his mother's phone number and had to get his Rolodex.

"Yesss! I am in there!" the 6-foot-5, 325-pound Duncan yelled.

Other nominees were just as excited for their collaborators. Best Actor nominee Russell Crowe was first to call his "The Insider" director Michael Mann, congratulating him on his three nominations

  • OSCAR WATCH: Ballots in the Mail!

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 11, 2000 -- Let the voting begin. Ballots for the 72nd Academy Awards were mailed out today to 4,164 actors, producers, writers, directors and others so blessed with the power to dole out shiny, bald gold guys.

Other (additional) ballots went out as early as Friday. Those ones went to Academy members in exile (i.e., those who don't live in California). The in-house Golden State types were on today's mailing list.

So just what is an Oscar ballot?

According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, it's a batch of stapled-together pieces of letter-sized paper. (Ah, glamour.) Voting is as high-tech as circling your picks. (Who needs space age AOL/Time Warner megamergers when humans still possess the power to circle?)

The ballots -- circles and all -- are due back at the Academy's Beverly Hills, Calif., offices Feb. 4 (by 5

  • OSCAR WATCH: What's New, Burt Bacharach?

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 9, 2000 -- Musical synergy, perhaps?

Easy-listening Burt Bacharach and rockin' Don Was have been tapped as musical directors for this year's Academy Awards ceremony. This is the first Oscar appointment for the veteran composers. Bacharach has won three Academy Awards - including two for his work for 1969's "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", and one for "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)," the Oscared Best Original Song from 1981's "Arthur."

Don Was was the creative spirit behind Was (Not Was), which scored intermittent hits on the pop charts throughout the 1980s, including "Walk the Dinosaur." The Grammy-winning Was went on to produce such award-winning hits as the k.d. lang and Roy Orbison duet "Crying" and the B-52s' booty-shaking anthem "Love Shack."

Bacharach and Was have never before collaborated. This leads to the inevitable

  • OSCAR WATCH: Doc Race Shapes Up

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 5, 2000 -- And then there was 12. The Oscar camp has announced the dozen second-round qualifiers for the Best Documentary prize. And judging by the lineup, it doesn't look like the deciding committee is experiencing its usual "forgetfulness" when it comes to potential nominees.

The list is a virtual hit parade, including some of the year's most talked-about films -- from the absurd ("Mr. Death" ) to the sublime ("Buena Vista Social Club") and the farcical ("American Movie") to the serious "On The Ropes.

The following is the complete list:

"Amargosa" "American Movie" "Beyond the Mat" "Buena Vista Social Club" "Genghis Blues" "Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr." "On the Ropes" "One Day in September" "Pop & Me" "Smoke and Mirrors: A History of Denial" "The Source" "Speaking in Strings"

  • Oscar buzz surrounds 'The Green Mile' premiere

LOS ANGELES -- The "Green Mile" premiere Monday night was accompanied by all of the fantastical effects, glitz and star power a possible Oscar contender deserves.

Director Frank Darabont returns after five years ("Shawshank Redemption") to bring Stephen King's 1996 best-selling serialized novel to the big screen.

"This is really exciting," said Darabont. "It took me this long to make another movie. I was waiting to fall in love with a story again, enough so I would go through the anguish of directing a movie. Thankfully, Stephen King gave me exactly that story."

Set on death row in a Southern prison in 1935, Tom Hanks stars as Paul Edgecomb. In flashbacks, Edgecomb recounts his tour of duty watching over a series of convicted killers awaiting execution in the electric chair.

"Stephen King wrote something that is quite in the realm of fanciful there in 1935

  • The Oscars: Whatever Happened to ...?

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Mar. 24, 2000 -- Does an Oscar win equal prestige? Yes. How about a career jump-start? Gwyneth Paltrow Well, er ... Most of the time.

For every, say, Kevin Spacey who escapes indie fringedom to Hollywood stardom after bagging an Oscar (for 1995's "The Usual Suspects"), there's a Marisa Tomei whose film career seems jinxed following a win (for 1992's "My Cousin Vinny").

That said, let's take a look at what the Oscar has done for last year's winners. Or they Marisa Tomeis or Kevin Spaceys?

ROBERTO BENIGNI: After accomplishing the seemingly impossible task of sugarcoating the Holocaust with humor in "Life is Beautiful" and taking two Oscars (including the Best Actor trophy) for his feat, the larger-than-life Italian comic seems to be taking a smaller-than-life approach to things these days. After staking a supporting role in the comic-boo

  • Plenty of Oscar potential in new releases

Oscar buzz continues at the box office this weekend as a few of the year's most highly touted films open in both wide and limited release.

Tom Hanks and company lead the way in the prison drama "The Green Mile," based on the popular series by Stephen King and directed by Frank Darabont. Five years ago, Darabont came to prominence with another prison-bound tale by King called "The Shawshank Redemption." That movie, which frequently tops lists of the most popular films of all time, garnered seven Academy Award nominations.

Other Oscar hopefuls include the limited releases "Cradle Will Rock" and "The Cider House Rules." "Cradle," directed by Tim Robbins and featuring an all-star cast, details the events of New York City's art scene in the 1930s. "Cider," directed by "What's Eating Gilbert Grape's" Lasse Hallstrom, is a quirky, coming-of-age love story adapted from John Irvin

  • Oscar Hero Robbed!

HOLLYWOOD, June 5, 2000 -- One day you're the hero in a high-profile theft case that makes headlines and changes your life.

A few months later, you're the victim of a low-profile crime that goes almost unnoticed but also changes your life.

So it goes for Willie Fulgear, the 61-year-old Los Angeles scrap metal dealer who earned a $50,000 reward in March, when he found most of the gold-plated Oscar statuettes that were stolen en route from a Chicago foundry to Los Angeles. In addition to the money, he received a limo ride to the Academy Awards and a seat alongside Hollywood's finest.

Sometime from May 15 to June 1, thieves broke into Fulgear's tiny apartment and made off with a 500 pound safe that contained about $40,000 of his reward money, plus some jewelry, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Fulgear was visiting relatives in Mississippi at the time.
