NEW YORK, Feb. 8, 2000 — It used to be impossible to step out to the movies and not bump into Quentin Tarantino, not in the popcorn line, of course, but up on the screen. As director, screenwriter, producer and even actor, the wünderkind had a career that took off like a bat out of hell in the early '90s with such hits as "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction." Alas, Tarantino's acting turns in films like "Destiny Turns on the Radio" and "From Dusk Till Dawn" were, um, not terribly memorable, but who cared? Tarantino was so hot he was even cool in lukewarm roles. But Tarantino got cold. Just like that, one of the busiest, most visible filmmakers of the '90s seemed to disappear. Now comes word that Tarantino is back as an actor, and we have director Steven Brill, New Line Cinema and Adam Sandler to thank. The prematurely retired filmmaker has a "significant" role in N

Sources from the Canadian set of Marlon Brando’s new movie "The Score" tell Liz Smith that the pleasantly plump Godfather has taken to arriving for his close-ups naked from the waist down. Yes, nekkid. According to the gossip maven, Brando’s co-stars, among them Angela Bassett, Ed Norton and Robert De Niro, and crew members think that this is Brando’s way of ensuring that he will be filmed only above the shoulders in order to hide his heft. Smith says that Brando has also asked that all his suits be made from the same stretchy velour fabric used for a lounging robe he dons in the film. Some things are really better left unseen.

HOLLYWOOD, June 30, 2000 -- Maybe they should try burning their bras. Throwing their weight behind the feminist struggle for equal pay (well, that's our take), Edie Falco and Lorraine Bracco -- the other-sex factors in the hit HBO mobster series "The Sopranos" -- reportedly are hitting up the cable network with salary renegotiation demands, just in time for production of the new season. (Cameras start rolling in August.) The Hollywood Reporter says that the two actresses are seeking deals similar to the six-figure raise their fellow co-star -- James Gandolfini, a male -- inked last year. On the show, Falco plays Gandolfini's wife; Bracco plays his psychiatrist. We called HBO for comment, but they were gone for the Fourth of July holiday.

The two-episode debut attracted the largest viewing audience in the series' history and brought in HBO's highest ratings since "Forrest Gump" premiered in 1995.In terms of HBO's original programming, "The Sopranos" easily became the cable station's highest rated premiere in seven years. Only Barbra Streisand's 1994 concert special and Mike Tyson's 1989 bout with Frank Bruno rank higher.Despite the growing accolades for "The Sopranos," however, executive producer Brad Grey tells Reuters he's willing to pull the plug on the drama after the fourth season. HOLLYWOOD, May 17, 2000 -- We'll always have "Walker, Texas Ranger." Yes, "Freaks and Geeks" may be (and was) flunked; "Sports Night" may be (and was) axed, but Chuck Norris is forever. "I went through 35 years of a strange dark fog. I never really quite understood what the point of anything was, you know, in life. It wasn't until Vanessa [Paradis] and then the birth of our daughter that I finally realized that there is something to live for. That whole thing of wanting to do drugs and wanting to numb yourself, you know, it's just postponing the inevitable."

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 2, 2000 -- Duran Duran’s camp says it was a typo. But one out-of-work L.A. machinist says it was a royal pain in the neck. It seems the British rock band posted Cornell Zachary’s phone number on their Web site by mistake. Duran Duran just wanted to sell some T-shirts and CDs. Zachary just wanted to get some sleep. But that was next to impossible with round-the-clock calls from Duran Duran fans from all over the world who called his house. Zachary made a call, too, to his lawyer. He filed a lawsuit against the band saying he suffered life-threatening high blood pressure episodes, sleep disturbances and other permanent health problems. And oh yeah, that didn’t help his broken ankle at the time, either. Band member Nick Rhodes spoke through his publicist saying the matter was being taken care of by their lawyers and could not comment while th
HOLLYWOOD, July 13, 2000 -- Fake shark fins, anyone? The marketing folks at Universal Home Video have been ticking off SoCal beachgoers, plastering lifeguard stands and trash cans with "Jaws" (1975) posters as part of a national ad campaign to plug the flick’s 25th anniversary video and DVD release. Critics of the ad say that the posters -- with that famous painting of a shark approaching an unsuspecting swimmer -- freak out children and could be misleading to non-English speakers. Universal has promised to nix the ad campaign if the hullabaloo continues. Meanwhile, the people at the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, who OK'd the publicity stunt, told the Los Angeles Times that the complaints arose because "everybody isn’t familiar with the movie." HOLLYWOOD, May 23, 2000 -- Is there hope for Divine Brown yet? Hugh Grant, a onetime Sunset Strip patron of Miss Brown, and longtime girlfriend Elizabeth Hurley today confirmed that they've parted romantic ways after 13 years. Although the tabloids have had Hurley dating up a storm of late, the couple, in a statement, insisted that "no third parties" were involved. Curiously, the pair also termed the split a "temporary thing" (that nonetheless required a press release, of course). "It is a mutual and amicable decision," the joint statement read. Grant, 39, and Hurley, 34, began dating in 1986. They have appeared together in a movie just once -- 1988's "Rowing With the Wind." Aside from the Divine Brown thing, Grant is best known for flummoxing his way through romantic comedies ("Four Weddings and a Funeral," "Notting Hill"); Hurley is a model/actress ("Au

SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 1, 2000 -- Will "Felicity" be flunked by the WB? And if it is, will it be granted the equivalent of a summer-school reprieve by ABC? That's the latest buzz, according to today's Hollywood Reporter. The sophomore college-life series, starring Keri Russell, Scott Foley and Scott Speedman, is ranked No. 144 for the season to date, which even by the WB's generous standards is -- how should we say? -- lousy. The Reporter says if the WB brings down the ax on the show, ABC might be of a mind to pick it up. It could be a karma thing -- the WB previously stole "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" from the alphabet network. SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 3, 2000 -- Quentin Tarantino, whose recent credits include, well, nothing, has finally lined up his next writing gig -- penning the liner notes to an upcoming Johnny Cash CD box set. According to Reuters, the MIA Oscar-winning filmmaker uses his new forum to muse about how much country's Man in Black has in common with, you know, gangsta rappers. Writes Tarantino: "In a country that thinks it's divided by race, where actually, it's divided by economics, Johnny Cash's songs of hillbilly thug life go straight to the heart of the American underclass." All rightie then. The Cash collection, due out May 23, is called "Love, God, Murder." Tarantino's thoughts appear on the "Murder" CD. For the unitiated, Tarantino used to be a filmmaker critically embraced for his poetic use of the F-word. He made a film called "Pulp Fiction" (1994)
