'Twas the weekend before Christmas, and all through the movie house, all the kids were eager, to see the talking mouse. In its opening weekend, "Stuart Little," an adaptation of the popular, half-century-old book by E.B. White featuring the voice of Michael J. Fox as the titular creature, grossed an estimated $15.4 million in 2,878 theaters, and it had the highest per-theater average of any movie in wide release at $5,351. These days, it seems that secretaries are receiving producer credits, and it's making the Producers Guild of America hopping mad. The prestigious Founders Award has been awarded to musician Tom Waits from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers songwriters group. Following in the footsteps of such notables as Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan and Bob Dylan, the award was handed out at the annual black-tie dinner organized by ASCAP, celebrating songwriters and publishers for 2000. To introduce the somewhat eccentric musician, an even odder message was given by the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards. In his video introduction, the guitar player came out of some bushes in a grubby coat and hat to give an indecipherable speech in praise of his onetime collaborator. Richards recalled buying 10,000 worms, on Waits' advice, to help his lawn. As reported by Reuters, Waits was greeted by a standing ovation and, in his acceptance speech, he claimed to love "the whole act of songwriting." Other winners included the Goo Goo Dolls and Holly Lamar, co-writer of the Faith Hill hit song, "Breathe."

Fuel's drummer Kevin Miller suffered an injury a couple weeks ago when the band performed in Panama City, Fla. Miller told Launch.com that he "blew a rib out" shy after playing the first five songs of the show. After being rushed to an ambulance, doctors put EKGs and IVs on his arm, thinking Miller had suffered a heart attack because of his difficulty to breathe. "I was so mad," Miller said. "I was like, 'God, if you kill me here and not wait until I'm in front of 25,00 people in heaven, I'll be really pissed off. And you'll send me to hell in no time because I'll be causing a whole bunch of ruckus in heaven." Miller is now doing well, after several sessions with a chiropractor. "Thank you for being here to celebrate my father's life, a life truly well lived," said Bill Allen, the entertainer's son. Allen died Oct. 30 at his son's Encino, Calif., home of an apparent heart attack. Allen was widely regarded as a talented musician, author, comedian and composer. He probably will be remembered best as the pioneer of late-night television. He created and hosted "The Tonight Show" format in 1953, playing the piano, chatting with guests and taking to the streets to interview passersby. "He set a standard of humanity th
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 25, 2000 -- Looks like Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst could've used some voice management classes for the Anger Management tour. Durst injured his vocal chords just three shows into the tour, which includes Papa Roach, Eminem and Xzibit on the bill. Doctors say his vocal chords are swollen. Durst says he started going hoarse on Tuesday during the show. He's hoping to be in shape by Thursday. WHAT A BASTARD: ODB is MIA ... again! The often-cuffed member of the Wu-Tang Clan known as Ol' Dirty Bastard decided that he no longer wanted to stay at a Pasadena drug treatment facility and simply bailed, SonicNet reports. He was ordered there by the court after violating his probation but bolted on foot while he was being taken to the L.A. Criminal Courthouse for an update report with a judge. A warrant has been issued for his arrest. Officials say the 31-
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 23, 2000 -- Oscar-winning actress, singer and dancer Liza Minnelli was rushed back to a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., hospital Thursday for encephalitis, a potentially deadly disease of the brain, the New York Post reports. According to the tab, the performer's bodyguard and chauffeur first found the 54-year-old Minnelli suffering from what looked to be a stroke in her Fort Lauderdale residence on Oct. 8 and was allegedly released from the hospital on Oct. 16, only to be reportedly re-admitted to the hospital three days later. LAUREN HUTTON INJURED: Model-actress Lauren Hutton was in serious condition Sunday after being hospitalized for injuries from a motorcycle crash, Reuters reports. The 55-year-old Hutton suffered multiple leg fractures, cuts and bruises and remained in the trauma unit for treatment. The accident occurred Saturday when Hutton's motor
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 22, 2000 -- They're baaaaaaaaack. But does girl power still rule? Britain's Spice Girls will have their eyes on top of the pop charts when they release their first new album in nearly two years. Their master plan is to release their first single, "Holler Holler/Let Love Lead The Way" in October and follow that up with the release of the record in November. Each of the Spice Girls have attempted solo careers since the band split up, most of them have flopped. "We are stronger after being apart for a while and we are very happy to have been back in the studio," band member Mel C told the Reuters wire service. PICKIN' AND GRINNIN': Folk music legend Pete Seeger can start fingerpicking again. According to news reports, Seeger's prized 55-year-old banjo, which disappeared earlier this month, was found alongside a road in Rosendale, New York, by
Salsa singer Marc Anthony has been ordered by a Puerto Rican judge to appear in court to answer a few questions after an alleged scuffle with a local TV gossip reporter. Leo Fernandez III, a TV personality on Puerto Rican TV, alleges that the singer got violent with him at a press conference when he asked Anthony if his wife, former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres, was pregnant (for the record, she is pregnant). The 31-year-old singer denies ever striking the reporter. Still, Fernandez is seeking unspecified damages for the alleged attack. Anthony is best known for his hit single, "I Need To Know," which is featured on his first English record released last year. R. KELLY ON TOP: It took the smooth R&B grooves of R. Kelly to knock off Universal's stronghold at the top of Billboard's album charts. R. Kelly's TP-2.com (Jive) debuted at No. 1 with 543,0
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 12, 2000 -- One lady is giving another lady her props. Actress Vanessa Redgrave, who played Lady Wilde in the 1997 film "Wilde," is scheduled to unveil a plaque honoring the late Lady Jane Francesca Wilde, the Irish mother of playwright and poet Oscar Wilde. The ceremony will take place Friday outside Lady Wilde's former home in central London, Reuters reports. Lady Wilde's son made a name for himself writing about his many sexual adventures. The writings shocked Victorian Britain, but get this. He devoted his writings to ... his mother! Her amorous son once wrote: "All poets love their mothers. I worship mine." Lady Wilde was also a poet in her own right. She died a poor woman in 1896 while her son was in jail serving a sentence for being gay.
HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 11, 2000 -- Keanu Reeves probably wishes he had skipped playing street hockey that fateful day. It was the day that director Joe Charbanic approached Reeves and asked him to read a script for a little serial killer flick, offering him a small role as the murderer. Reeves took the part, thinking it was going to be a little boutique film, but before he knew it, things were mushrooming out of control and "The Watcher" ballooned into a relatively big-budget studio movie. And his little role kept getting bigger and bigger. Inside.com reports today that Reeves ain't no big fan of "The Watcher," largely because his little cameo morphed into a something altogether bigger. "The script did change," director Charbanic told the Web site. "It got bigger than [Reeves] wanted. He wanted it to be a little boutique film." The report says that, at one point, Reeve
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 8, 2000 -- Ever heard of a little straight-to-video film called "Fire on the Amazon"? If not, we can tell you this much at least: Sandra Bullock is in it -- and she's naked a lot of the time. Still reading? Or are you already driving to the video store to pick up a copy? The flick, directed by Luis ("Anaconda") Llosa and shot during Bullock's pre-"Speed" days in 1993, was never released theatrically in the United States due to wranglings over its MPAA rating due to sexual content. But, thanks to the wonders of home video, the film was recently released on DVD and VHS, proudly bearing its NC-17 rating. And, according to a report this week in the Toronto Sun, Bullock is angry about the film's release. She's not angry because the film stinks, but "... mostly it's because she is buck naked and locked in an exceptionally explicit, doggie-style,
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 2, 2000 -- He’s free at least … or at least very soon. Reuters reports that a California state appeals court on Wednesday ordered actor Robert Downey Jr. freed, his spokesman said. Spokesman Alan Nierob said that the court had granted an appeal by Downey, who was serving a three-year jail term for drug possession and who had argued via his lawyers that an L.A. Superior Court judge had miscalculated his sentence. Downey could be released as early as today from the California Substance Abuse Facility and State Prison in Corcoran after bail arrangements are made through a court, Nierob said. Nairobi did not know the details of the ruling. Downey, 35, was scheduled to be released in November with credit for time off for good behavior. Lawyers for Downey argued that the Malibu judge who sentenced the Oscar-nominated actor in August should have
HOLLYWOOD, July 24, 2000 -- Home is where the money is, and Tim Allen is going back home. Daily Variety is reporting that Allen and Disney studios have a sequel to 1994's "The Santa Clause" in the works. That was the family comedy where Allen played a burned-out ad executive who reluctantly assumed St. Nick's present-distribution duties. And, oh yeah, it made $144 million. KISS AND SELL: This sounds kinda interesting. Gene Simmons of KISS, who produced the ill-fated "Detroit Rock City" movie, is developing a new flick called "Jon Sable, Freelance," according to Variety. Based upon a 1980s comic book about an African big-game hunter who writes children's books in his spare time, the property was made into a short-live TV series in the late 1980s, with Rene Russo playing the hero's girlfriend. PRISON BRATT: Benjamin Bratt, he of ex-"Law and Order" fame, will play t
HOLLYWOOD, July 12, 2000 – Actor Liam Neeson broke his pelvis and suffered other boo-boos when he struck a deer while riding his Harley in upstate New York, authorities said. Dutchess County Sheriff's officials said the accident occurred Tuesday afternoon, and the "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace" star was taken to Sharon Hospital in Sharon, Connecticut and later transferred to Lenox Hill hospital in New York. He also suffered cuts to his legs. The deer was thrown from the road and later died from its wounds, authorities said.
HOLLYWOOD, May 31, 2000 – Maybe they should have called it "Who Wants To Be A Sun-Stroked, Malaria-Stricken, Snake-Bitten, Unbathed, Humiliated Millionaire?" Instead, they called it "Survivor," and in case you haven't heard, it's a new "gameshow" in which 16 strangers are deposited on a tropical island near the equator, where they fend off disease, diarrhea and deadly animals for 39 days (with cameras in tow, of course). It premieres tonight at 8 p.m. (EDT/PDT) -– surprisingly, not on Fox, but on CBS. Here's the fun part: The object of the game is to win $1 million, and to do that, you have to be the last one standing when the supply of rats runs out. You pretend to like your castaway teammates, but every three days there's a vote to kick one person off the island, and you're sure as heck not gonna kick yourself off. Bickering and back-stabbing ensues. It's "Gilligan's Island" m
SANTA MONICA, Calif, March 22, 2000 - Call it "The Battle of the Blonds." Brad Pitt Brad Pitt (aka, the young Robert Redford) and Robert Redford (aka, the old Brad Pitt) are eyeing a spy flick called "Spy Game" in which they'd give audiences a double jolt of their, well, blondness. Today's Hollywood Reporter says Pitt and Redford have been looking for a flick to do together. To date their sole collaboration is 1992's "A River Runs Through It." On that one, though, Redford stayed behind the camera, directing and narrating. "Spy Game," an in-the-works espionage flick for Universal Pictures, would be the first time the two hotties shared screen time. Robert Redford In the film, Pitt would play the young hottie (er, CIA agent) who gets kidnapped by the Chinese. Redford would play the older hottie (er, CIA agent) who sets out to rescue the kid. TAKING FLIGHT
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 8, 2000 -- It's good to be Regis Philbin. If you are Regis Philbin, you have "television magic." If you are Regis Philbin, you are "the hottest thing in television." And if you are Regis Philbin, you have a fat, new contract with your TV bosses. The suits at ABC and parent-company Disney announced today that they'd inked Reeg to long-term deals to continue as host of the network's "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and the Disney-produced syndicated morning talker "Live! With Regis & Kathie Lee." In making the announcement, Buena Vista Television President Janice Marinelli said all that stuff about Regis being hot and having magic. Unfortunately, she didn't say anything about how much they're going to be paying Reeg. (Reports that Philbin had secured a $20 million-per-year deal out of ABC for "Millionaire" recently were denied -- by Philbin.)
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 1, 2000 -- Maybe they'll call it "South Park: Smaller, Shorter & Definitely Cut."While those little two-dimensional kids from Colorado used every four-letter word in existence last summer in their big-screen debut, at the Academy Awards later this month they may have to bite their tongues. "South Park" "Blame Canada," the bring-down-the-house number from "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut," is nominated for the Best Original Song Oscar, but its use of the dreaded "F" word and other naughty references has become a hot potato for the cartoon's creators, Academy officials and ABC network censors. One thing's certain: "Blame Canada," like all the other nominees, will be performed at the Oscars, as per tradition. But will the offensive words be deleted? Will the TV network bleep out the foul language, like CBS did when Alanis Morissette pe
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 17, 2000 -- Charlton Heston, call your agent. Twentieth Century Fox's long-anticipated "Planet of the Apes" remake is not extinct. And ditto for -- Warner Bros.' new-look "Superman" movie may fly after all. Word comes today from the Hollywood Reporter that these big-budget sci-fi and super-hero projects -- two of the most highly anticipated movies of the 1990s that never came to pass -- may soon be salvaged from development hell after years of on-again, off-again directors and aborted screenplays. Fox could reportedly seal a deal with Tim Burton before the end of the week to direct its "Apes" remake, while Warner officials are said to be pleased with a new "Superman" screenplay from Bill Wisher, who co-wrote "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" with James Cameron. Fox's announcement that Burton is in talks to direct "Apes" should come as a welc
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 23, 2000 -- Hollywood was suffering from the box office blahs over the weekend, just as Hollywood insiders anticipated. For the first time since Oct. 22, no films cracked double-digits. Miramax's PG-13-rated teen-appeal romantic comedy "Down To You" managed to top the chart with only an estimated $8.30 million at 1,971 theaters ($4,211 per theater). Written and directed by Kris Isacsson, it stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Julia Stiles. "I think it's great," Miramax Senior Vice President, Marketing, David Kaminow said Sunday morning. "Freddie Prinze Jr. cannot deny the fact that he has a following. He really can do a great job of opening a picture. "I think our (marketing) materials were good, and it just looked like a fun movie for its core audience of young girls. There hasn't been anything for them for a while. "The PG-13
It looks like tough sledding for Hollywood this pre-Christmas weekend, according to distribution executives with an eye on tracking study data.None of the three new wide releases appears likely to open impressively."It doesn't look too exciting in terms of the openings," said one studioexecutive. "The first choice on 'Bicentennial Man' is running only like 8%. Now, admittedly, it's (only mid-week) but I would think they would like to have been in double digits by now."Buena Vista/Touchstone and Columbia Pictures' PG-rated sci-fi fantasy "Bicentennial Man," directed by Chris Columbus and starring Robin Williams, opens Friday at about 2,200 theaters. While 2,200 theaters is certainly a wide break, it's not as wide as last weekend's theater count for "Toy Story 2" (3,257), "The Green Mile" (2,875), "The World Is Not Enough" (3,063), "End Of Days" (2,652) or "Sleepy Ho
