  HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 13, 2000 -- Obviously CBS still isn’t tired of keepin’ it real, yo. The network that brought us "Survivor" has committed to yet another reality-based TV series produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Bertram Van Munster.
  
  In the new show "Race Around the World," eight pairs of people will travel to 11 cities in 30 days, performing a different task at each stop. The trek will begin and end in New York City.
  
  Along the way, the slower pairs will be eliminated until just one is left. That couple will receive a yet-to-be determined prize when they land back in New York.
  
  "Race" is scheduled to debut in summer 2001.

  "Script problems" halt "Tortoise vs. Hare"

  Aardman Animation, the Bristol, England-based animation studio that produced last year's hit Chicken Run, has halted production on its current $35 million production of Tortoise vs. Hare, has laid off more than half of its 172-member crew, and has decided to put the entire production on a six-month hold, the London Independent reported Thursday.

  The elements sound familiar: 16 strangers are sent to the South China Sea island of Pulau Tiga-split into two tribes-to compete in Immunity Challenges as one contestant is voted off every three days for 40 days.

  It's more than déjà vu. It's the British version of Survivor, which debuted Monday on Britain's ITV network to 6.6 million viewers-a 31% share of the viewing audience, according to BBC reports.

  Jerry Bruckheimer isn't content on ruling the big screen. Now he's set his sights on the small screen, as well. Fresh off the blockbuster success of Pearl Harbor, Bruckheimer has signed an exclusive two-year TV production deal with Warner Bros. Television, says the Hollywood Reporter. Bruckheimer scored a small screen hit last season with the surprising success of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation on CBS. CBS also has purchased Bruckheimer's The Amazing Race for the upcoming fall season.

  Canadian actors support U.S. counterparts

  The national executive director of Canada's main actors' union, the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) said Tuesday that his union will support the Screen Actors Guild's demands that actors hired by Canadian production companies controlled by U.S. studios be paid at U.S. contract rates.

  Now that the major networks have released their fall 2001 schedules, all it takes is a brief glance at the Thursday night brackets to realize this year's hottest rivalry--CBS' Survivor and CSI vs. NBC's Must-See TV lineup--will ignite yet again come October.

  CBS appears to be riding a wave of confidence following this season's consistent victory over NBC's Thursday night sitcoms. Survivor scored on average 10 million more viewers than Friends per week, partly due in part to several Friends reruns in March, according to Nielsen Media Research. As a result, the Eye Network is unflinchingly pitting this fall Survivor and CSI against NBC's Friends, Will & Grace, Just Shoot Me and the new sitcom Inside Schwartz.

  MUSIC NOTES: Napster vs. Rage

  HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 11, 2000 -- The battle on the Internet rages on.
  
  Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello took matters into his own hands when he found out that fans of his band were being kicked off Napster by the band’s record company when they were caught downloading their new album “Renegades.”
  
  Morello quickly posted a letter on the band’s Web site www.ratm.com calling the move by Sony Music “a horrible mistake” and saying: “[We] sincerely apologize to all of our fans who were kicked off Napster for downloading 'Renegades,'" Reuters reports.
  
  Sony’s move, no doubt, was to guard itself from lost sales of “Renegades,” which hit stores last Tuesday. Those who attempted to download Rage songs received a message that read, “Denied Access By Sony/Rage_Mach.”

  Reuters reports that Tinseltown heavyweights such as Robert De Niro, Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Ben Affleck and Cher were among the folks on hand to celebrate Mrs. Clinton's 53rd birthday on Wednesday.
  
  Her husband, President Clinton, served as the keynote speaker for the occasion.
  
  At $10,000 a head, the birthday fest raised more than $2 million for Mrs. Clinton's New York Senate campaign.

  HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 19, 2000 -- Talk about a teaser. Not only did Elle magazine announce "Don't Date George Clooney" on its November cover, the accompanying article implied that the Hollywood heartthrob had a thing for sniffing armpits. It seems writer Deanna Kizis detailed her boring date with an unnamed movie star, described as an actor from "The Thin Red Line." At night's end, the actor "stuck his face in my armpit," Kizis writes. "He took a deep whiff and, coming up for air, said, 'You smell so good.'"
  
  A full-page photo of Clooney accompanies the article, headlined "Gods and Monsters."
  
  The 39-year-old actor, voted "The Sexiest Man Alive" by People magazine and the star of last summer's blockbuster "The Perfect Storm," shot off a letter to Elle editors stating that he's never dated Kizis.

  HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 2, 2000 -- Duran Duran’s camp says it was a typo. But one out-of-work L.A. machinist says it was a royal pain in the neck. It seems the British rock band posted Cornell Zachary’s phone number on their Web site by mistake. Duran Duran just wanted to sell some T-shirts and CDs. Zachary just wanted to get some sleep.
  
  But that was next to impossible with round-the-clock calls from Duran Duran fans from all over the world who called his house.
  
  Zachary made a call, too, to his lawyer. He filed a lawsuit against the band saying he suffered life-threatening high blood pressure episodes, sleep disturbances and other permanent health problems.
  
  And oh yeah, that didn’t help his broken ankle at the time, either.

  HOLLYWOOD, July 24, 2000 -- The clock is ticking, and Kathie Lee Gifford's days are numbered. And, while she's still got the eyes and ears of TV America, she's sounding off about who should take her place after she departs "Live With Regis and Kathie Lee" on Friday.

  HOLLYWOOD, June 7, 2000 -- What was worse for Eminem today? Going to court? Or reading the local newspaper? In a Michigan court today, the bestseller rapper pleaded not guilty to assault and weapon charges stemming from a weekend nightclub brawl.
  
  And in the Detroit Free Press today, Em's old lady dissed him big time for the aforementioned weekend nightclub brawl.
  
  A little background: Early Sunday at the Hot Rocks Cafe in Warren, Mich., Eminem (real name: Marshall Mathers) allegedly conked another man over the head with a 9mm handgun because, prosecutors say, he caught the guy (one John Guerra) smooching with Mrs. Eminem (real name: Kim Mathers).
  
  Four people, including the hip-hopster, were arrested. But in a letter to the Free Press, Eminem's better half seems to hold one party in particular responsible.

  Mrs. Brady Dissed!

  HOLLYWOOD, May 10, 2000 -- This is what happens when TV anchors are allowed to speak extemp ... extemp ... er, without a script. On Tuesday's edition of "Later Today" on NBC, guest gossip expert Nancy O'Dell (blonde anchor fixture on TV tab "Extra") inadvertently dissed beloved "Brady Bunch" mom (and "Later Today" co-host) Florence Henderson.
  
  What happened was this: O'Dell and Henderson colleague Jodie Applegate were babbling about Tom Cruise and the star's "Mission: Impossible 2" leading lady, Thandie Newton. The conversation veered off and suddenly O'Dell was happily noting that before ol' Flo could be considered for such a plum role, she'd have to take acting lessons. Ouch.

  "This thing has really upset me," said Dion in a statement read by her lawyer as the suit was filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court.   "She's All That" star Rachael Leigh Cook is already a lock to play Josie, the leader of the female rocker/super-sleuth group. Posey will portray a 'tyrannical egomaniacal record label CEO.'
