SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 13, 2000 -- Dimension Films' "Scream 3" made the weekend's biggest waves at the box office, holding on to first place despite 20th Century Fox's strong launch for Leonardo DiCaprio's "The Beach." "Scream 3" took a hefty second weekend drop but still sliced off an estimated $16.40 million (-53%) at 3,467 theaters (theater count unchanged, $4,730 per theater). Its total is approximately $57.1 million. In December 1997, "Scream 2's" second weekend gross of $13.9 million was down 58%. It went on to gross about $101.3 million in domestic theaters. "It's actually a better drop than expected considering where we opened," Miramax Senior Vice President, Marketing, David Kaminow said Sunday morning. "Looking at 'Scream 2,' after 10 days, we were at $55 million. On 'Scream 3' after 10 days, we're at $57 million. So we're on a good track and feel
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 3, 2000 -- Hollywood should finally have something to scream about at the box office this weekend thanks to "Scream 3." "This weekend there's going to be 'Scream' -- and then everything else," observed one distribution executive. After two consecutive weekends where all it took was a single-digit gross to top the chart, Hollywood is gearing up for some big numbers. Soaring ticket sales are anticipated as Dimension Films -- Miramax's genre label -- launches the third and concluding chapter of its blockbuster "Scream" series at 3,467 theaters. "It's probably going to gross what the next four movies combined gross," one insider said, noting that at mid-week the thriller had a 24 percent first-choice tracking score. (Translation: Of moviegoers polled, 24 percent said they would see 'Scream 3' before any other film in release). "That certain
SANTA MONICA, Calif., February 4, 2000 -- Four years ago, "Scream" made slasher movies cool again, made big-screen stars out of Neve Campbell and a few other TV teens and made lots and lots of money.Today brings "Scream 3," the final entry in the series. The release is a real head-scratcher for some. On one hand, Miramax is pushing it in a record 3,467 theaters; on the other hand, it's pushing it into said theaters with a minimum of (how can this be?) hype."In my two years of dishing out gossip and news for my Internet Web site, I have never seen such a low-profile for one of the most popular franchises," says Thomas Chau, webmaster of Cinema Confidential (www.cinecon.com), a movie rumor-tracking Web site, tells Hollywood.com.In the movies, secrecy means either one of two things: (1) Your movie stinks and you don't want anybody to know (until they buy ti
