HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 4, 2000 -- If you think the business of talk shows is easy, just take a look at Dr. Laura Schlessinger. Plagued by protests, bad publicity and weak showings since its inception, the titular radio personality's eponymous TV talk show "Dr. Laura" has once again come under fire. The New York Post says that the talk show host has been reportedly planting fake guests on her show. One such mole, the tab says, was allegedly Dr. L's researcher who had appeared on the show twice (and two days in a row, no less) but as different people. The Post was apparently tipped off by someone from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation who watched the two shows and saw through the disguise. Paramount, the show's producers, has remained quiet on the accusations.
HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 6, 2000 -- Brooke Shields can let out a sigh of relief. She's safe now, well, at least for the next decade. A man who prosecutors say had been stalking the star of the now-defunct NBC series "Suddenly Susan" for the past 15 years was sentenced to probation and counseling after he agreed to stay away from Shields for the next 10 years. Mark Bailey, 42, of New Jersey pleaded no contest to stalking and terrorizing the actress. Bailey will go to psychological evaluations twice a week and is prohibited from contacting the actress, her family and her employees.
HOLLYWOOD, May 17, 2000 -- Axl Rose hasn't made a record in seven years, hasn't done a public appearance in almost that long. But, to hear the cops tell it, Karen McNeil still thinks he's hot. The 39-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday night after allegedly trying to sneak onto the ex-Guns N' Roses frontman's secluded estate in the Latigo Canyon Section of Malibu, Calif., the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says. McNeil was booked on stalking charges. Deputies say Rose had obtained restraining orders against the woman in the past. "She done this more than once," Deputy Rick Martinez tells Hollywood.com. In case you've forgotten, Rose (and Guns N' Roses) burst onto the hard rock A list in 1987 with the top-selling "Appetite For Destruction." But he really hasn't done much of anything, music-wise, since the group disbanded after 1993's "The Spaghetti Incide
HOLLYWOOD, May 9, 2000 -- Who says you have to be red-hot famous to have your own personal stalker? Just go ask onetime "King of Comedy" Jerry Lewis and onetime pop-queen Linda Ronstadt. Both former A-listers presumably are breathing easier today following arrests in a pair of long-term stalking cases. In Lewis' instance, a 56-year-old man, fresh from prison on a Jerry Lewis stalking charge, was busted Friday in Wyoming on a, yes, Jerry Lewis stalking charge. This time, the guy's accused of telling Jer "your [sic] dead" in a letter mailed to the funnyman. The Ronstadt-related bust came over the weekend in Arizona when a 55-year-old man, clad in a white tuxedo and matching white shoes, was taken into custody outside a Sun City venue where the singer was performing. The man, also recently sprung from prison on an attempted stalking rap, got busted for an outstanding warrent. His w

Dennis Quaid says that he and Meg Ryan still talk frequently, despite his filing for divorce in July 2000, The Associated Press reports.
Negotiators for actors and producers have decided to step up their efforts to make a deal by next week, when their existing contract expires, Reuters reports.
Just nine days away from the expiration of their contract, representatives of the actors' unions and the producers' association are making little progress toward a settlement, according to the online media magazine Inside.
Matthew Hooker, the 40-year-old man accused of stalking actress Nicole Kidman, told a Santa Monica, Calif., court judge that he has never stalked anyone in his life, including the actress, according to Reuters. Kidman, whose 10-year marriage to actor Tom Cruise ended earlier this year, filed a restraining order against Hooker, claiming the Los Angeles-area resident contacted her by phone and got into a scuffle with security men outside her home last month. Hooker reportedly admitted to writing her a love poem and going by her house to invite her to the ballet, but he vehemently denied stalking Kidman. She claims his actions have made her fear for the safety and wellbeing of her and her children.
Nicole Kidman promises to never publicly reveal details behind her marriage with actor Tom Cruise. "I haven't up until now and I'm not going to," Kidman told Australian television on Tuesday, Reuters reports. Kidman says the topic is very private and she wouldn't respect someone if she saw them on TV talking about their personal life. The actress also said that there is more than herself and Cruise involved in the divorce, as well as her two children and their extended families.
A Los Angeles man accused of stalking Nicole Kidman was ordered Wednesday to keep at least 250 yards away from the actress and her family for three years, Reuters reported. Santa Monica Superior Court Judge Alan Haber said there was enough evidence to suggest that Matthew Hooker, 40, had harassed Kidman. An Internet entrepreneur and aspiring screenwriter, Hooker had allegedly posted messages on his Web site, including a love poem called Nicole, and went to her home to invite her out. Kidman said she feared for the safety of her family. "There is no reason at all to have a restraining order against me. I've never threatened anyone. I'm a gentleman," Hooker said, according to Reuters.
The talks between the Screen Actors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Pictures and Television Producers resumed Wednesday after a five-day recess and less than six weeks before the June 30 contract expiration. The break served as a breather to have more time to study proposals and tend to other business, but both sides have maintained a news blackout, following along the same pattern as the Writers Guild of America talks. Optimism has been high regarding an easy resolution, due to the recent agreement made with the WGA, but studios are still remaining wary, holding off scheduling publicity and promo tours until after June.
The actors guilds and the studios resumed talks Wednesday after almost a week off. Sort of. Instead of meeting face-to-face, reps from both sides met separately in committees, Variety reports. Insiders say this is an indication that talks will go down to the June 30 wire. The committee meetings are expected to continue Thursday, and no date has been set for face-to-face talks to recommence.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert O'Neill ruled Thursday that Gwyneth Paltrow's stalker should not be released anytime soon from the mental institution where he's incarcerated. Dante Michael Soiu, 51, who was convicted and sentenced to a high security psychiatric facility for treatment in front of Judge O'Neill last December, had presented a progress report to the court, says Reuters. Paltrow (Shakespeare In Love) testified tearfully during the original trial, stating that she'd been living in fear of Soiu for more than a year.
Actors and studios resume talks after the latest hiatus in negotiations. The snail's pace hasn't--yet--started anyone in Hollywood worrying about a strike, but the news blackout has people speculating on what will happen when a deal is done.
Talks between actors and producers begin again
After a 12-day break, talks between the actors' unions and the studios begin again Tuesday. Despite SAG/AFTRA's talk of slimming down their demands and focusing on the needs of middle-income actors, the list of items up for negotiation is thought to number near 80, according to Variety. The studios want a discounted structure for actors with small parts. Only 25 days remain on the actors' current contract with the studios.
The Screen Actors Guild took an aggressive stance Wednesday in the latest round of talks with the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists, placing salary demands much higher than the expected ceiling of $120 million salary hike over three years, Variety reported. While SAG had initially imposed work limitations during the strike, such as limiting activity to non-U.S. citizens and requiring that shoots take place in foreign markets, they have now eased restrictions and granted extension agreements to projects already in the works.
Appearing to depart from the strict code of prerelease secrecy that surrounds Steven Spielberg movies, costar Jude Law has discussed his role in A.I. with Premiere magazine, revealing that the android character, named Gigolo Joe, was created to "pleasure" women. Although the character appears human, Law said, he had to spend three hours a day in make-up. "It's a very simple effect," he said, "but not one that's ever been used before. I look like rubber, like I'm spray-painted. But you can always see me, and I can do everything. I'm not Max Headroom." The message of the film, said Law, "is that if we do create artificial life, we will be responsible for them, we will be their gods."
Formal negotiations between the two actors unions and the producers alliance won't resume until Wednesday, though that's to be expected, say wire reports. The break will be used for the Screen Actors Guild, the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists and Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers to evaluate what was proposed May 15, when negotiations began. Talks will continue Wednesday and Thursday, before they recess for the Memorial Day weekend. When talks resume after that, the two sides will have a little less than five weeks to iron out a deal.
The negotiations between the two actors unions and the producers alliance, scheduled to begin 2 p.m. PDT Tuesday, are purportedly more concerned with rank-and-file members than with the top Hollywood stars.
Higher pay for middle-income actors - defined by the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists as those actors making $30,000 to $70,000 per year, and comprise 50 percent of their membership - is their main issue. Two percent of the combined unions' membership of 135,000 earns more than $100,000 per annum.
Sugar Ray, best known for their hits "Fly" and "Every Morning," will follow punk and new wave sounds in their forthcoming self-titled album, due June 12. The four original members of Black Sabbath - Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, and Geezer Butler - have begun work on a new album, their first since 1978's Never Say Die, Rolling Stone reports. Creed singer Scott Stapp is enjoying spending time at his Florida home, close to his son Jagger. Stapp is taking the time off to write new material for the band's new album.
"A cloud has been lifted from the Los Angeles economy and tens of thousands of Angelenos will breathe a sigh of relief."
So said Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan in a statement issued after learning of Friday's tentative settlement between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
Not so fast.
The entertainment industry still has another round of negotiations to resolve, this time between the actors' unions - the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists - and the AMPTP.
Negotiations will begin Tuesday, May 15, a date pushed back five days from the originally scheduled May 10 start. The delay is mostly due to the lengthy talks between the WGA and the AMPTP and the accommodations that are being made for SAG officials to travel to California.
Actress Nicole Kidman filed a temporary restraining order on Monday to protect her and her two children, Isabella and Conor, from an alleged stalker, according to the New York Daily News. In the petition, Kidman alleges that Matthew E. Hooker, 40, "has come to my home on numerous occasions" and "threatened to commit acts of violence."

HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 5, 2001 -- Can't we all just get along? Looks like we can.In a last-ditch attempt to save the entertainment industry from a devastating strike, The Writers Guild of America has agreed to stretch their film and TV contract negotiations to today. WGA's generous gesture contradicts its original two-week deadline, but this sudden move is a promising sign that both sides are close to a settlement.Negotiators have agreed to talk today, but no deadline has been set for this new round of discussion. When the bargaining began on January 22, the WGA issued a two-week deadline on talks. If there was no resolution within that time, WGA members vowed to pull the plug on further negotiation until a month before their contract expires on May 2. Moments after the meetings began at WGA headquarters, Writers Guild of America West president John Wells revised the terms by im
HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 5, 2001 -- Hole frontwoman Courtney Love is suing her boyfriend's ex-wife. Her claim? That she's being stalked. In the lawsuit, Love claims that Lesley Barber, the ex-wife of Geffen Records exec Jim Barber, allegedly tried to mow her down with her Volvo and threatened to burn her house down during a "20-month campaign of stalking." The incident involving Barber's Volvo resulted in an injury to Love's foot when Barber ran over it with her car. The alleged attack on June 4 cost Love an acting part in the sci-fi thriller "John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars" and her $500,000 payment. HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 15, 2000 -- Gwyneth Paltrow can finally breathe a sigh of relief. An Ohio man, one Dante Soiu, 49, was found guilty Thursday in a Los Angeles Superior Court closed trial of stalking Paltrow, Reuters reports. The "Bounce" actress's name was changed to "anonymous" on court documents to protect her privacy. Presiding Judge Robert O'Neill also found Soiu to be legally insane and ordered him to be locked up in a psychiatric facility until he is determined to have recovered. A June 14 progress report hearing has been scheduled. Paltrow, 28, testified last week and was said to be shaken and frightened. "Ms. Paltrow was very frightened," Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Rhonda Saunders told Reuters. "Her testimony was compelling. It doesn't matter if you are a celebrity or a housewife or a law clerk, it affects everyone the same way, wit
HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 4, 2000 -- Catherine Zeta-Jones knows how important trust is. The new Mrs. Michael Douglas will star in the thriller "Trust," a project that is said by Daily Variety to be in the vein of 1987's "Fatal Attraction." Originally a British miniseries, "Trust" will follow a lawyer living in New York who discovers that her psychiatrist hubby is having an affair with one of his patients. KING OF THE 'CASTLE': "The Legend of Bagger Vance" helmer and actor Robert Redford might return to the front of the camera in "The Castle," a drama directed by "The Contender's" Rod Lurie, Variety says. HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 27, 2000 -- Between work and life, there exists something called semi-retirement. And what do you know, Garth Brooks is considering it. Again. The country singing king announced his intended withdrawal from the world of music today in a press conference, stressing that he would like to devote more time to being a full-time father, Reuters reports. ``I asked my wife to be both mother and father for eight years to our three daughters, and it's time for me to accept my responsibilities as a parent,'' Brooks said. Still, Brooks asserted that his upcoming album, out next spring, would probably not be his last. And while we're at it, the 38-year-old singer also said that he would not be opposed to giving an occasional concert or two. Of course, this is not the first time Brooks has retread from his career to refocus his attention on his family.
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 12, 2000 -- Meg Ryan has finally broken her silence. Months after Ryan, 37, and husband Dennis Quaid, 46, each filed for divorce, the actress discusses the split-up of her nine-year marriage and other matters with W magazine in its November issue. In her first interview about the breakup, Ryan tells W that her marriage fell apart long before it became public, that Quaid did not cheat on her and that their split did not occur because of a third party. Rumors have flown that "Gladiator" stud Russell Crowe was one of the causes of the broken marriage. "My marriage and the dissolution of my marriage ... well, the reasons for it will always be speculation because I'll never talk about what went down, and neither will Dennis," Ryan tells W. "It dissolved before it became sport for the press. The public and the press tuned in way after." Ryan doe
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 5, 2000 -- Hollywood stars will have to find a new ego booster. Rosie O'Donnell, whose daytime talk show is the friendliest space an actor could hope for (unless you're Tom Selleck), says she wants to devote herself to "more fulfilling" pursuits. O'Donnell says in the November issue of Ladies' Home Journal that she plans to leave her successful show in 2002, at the end of her contract with Warner Bros. The Broadway musical-loving host, who has four adopted children, says she'd like to spend more time with her nonprofit organization, Rosie Adoptions. She told Ladies' Home Journal that although she enjoys hosting her show, she is "sick of all the crap that goes with it." An outspoken advocate for gun control laws, the New York-area resident received kidnapping threats against her son Parker in 1999. After seeking approval for a bodygu
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 30, 2000 -- Sharon Stone in Venice! The "Basic Instinct" femme fatale cum newspaperman’s wife and her red stiletto heels set off a boat collision in Italy’s canal city Tuesday. Stone, arriving in town for the Venice Film Festival, innocently took off her shoes to board a water taxi and in doing so set off a chase by paparazzi. The vessel with Stone onboard accelerated, creating waves that pushed a photographer’s boat into a pole and another water taxi, reports The Associated Press. One photographer needed stitches to close a head injury. Stone, 42, a Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee for "Casino" (1995), was en route to a party for Clint Eastwood and his "Space Cowboys" co-stars Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland and James Garner.
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 23, 2000 -- After months of speculation and rumors of alleged fights on the set, "Charlie's Angels" star Lucy Liu is fessing up. No! She did NOT take a swing at co-star Bill Murray during filming. The 31-year-old "Ally McBeal" star says the two did have creative differences during one, count 'em, one scene, but that she never tried to clock him in the jaw, The Associated Press reports. And word now is that the two are on very good terms. Great! We can all sleep now. DOWN BUT NOT OUT: Muhammad Ali was on the ropes, but now he's stinging like a bee again. "Ali," the Columbia Pictures film about one of the greatest fighters ever, was almost scrapped last week when its director, Michael Mann ("The Insider"), alerted execs at the studio that he might not finish the movie in time within the $106 million budget. If the February sweeps were like network TV's playoffs, Regis was Michael Jordan -- only shorter and dressed like a bootlegger from the 1920s.The good news? As the negotiations between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers went on through the early morning hours Wednesday, extending beyond the WGA contract expiration deadline, both factions agreed to resume the talks later today.
Another day has passed, and another announcement has been made that no agreement has been reached between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Sessions between the two parties were called "very tense negotiations" as the threat of a crippling strike still looms over the entertainment industry. Both sides have remained tight-lipped about the ongoing negotiations, keeping to their mutually agreed upon code of silence. Wednesday's 14-hour session followed on the heels of Tuesday's 17-hour marathon meeting, with seemingly little progress. The writers are currently working despite their contract having expired on Wednesday, and a walkout can't happen without a formal vote of the 11,500 members of the WGA.
