SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 10, 2000 -- It's official: The whole world loves stories about lecherous, unpleasant people! "American Beauty" Yes, "American Beauty" picked up where it left off at last month's Oscars, taking a field-best six awards at the British equivalent of the Academy Awards (officially known as the British Academy Film Awards). Kevin Spacey repeated as best actor with leading lady Annette Bening avenging her Oscar loss with a best actress win. The film was also named best picture at Sunday's ceremony. The only major "Beauty" player to be denied another chance to issue really sincere thank-yous was Oscar-approved director Sam Mendes, who lost out to Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar for "All About My Mother." British stars Jude Law ("The Talented Mr. Ripley") and Maggie Smith ("Tea with Mussolini") were honored in the supporting-acting categories on

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 24, 2000 -- Well, they did it. The newspaper folks who threatened to scoop the Oscars have scooped the Oscars. Or have they? "American Beauty" Today's Wall Street Journal published the results of an "informal" survey of Academy voters -- a survey that purports to show that most Hollywood insiders are leaning toward "American Beauty" as Best Picture. Did we really need the Journal to tell us that? Maybe not. But some of the other results of the article were surprising. Like the item about how many voters think Annette Bening is going to win Best Actress for "American Beauty," but they say they're going to vote for Hilary Swank from "Boys Don't Cry." The poll has the Best Actor race as a tossup between Kevin Spacey ("American Beauty") and Denzel Washington ("The Hurricane"). The supporting acting categories are said to be no
HOLLYWOOD, May 10, 2000 -- Only in America could Heather Graham be hailed as our top comedic actress for her "performance" in "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me." Fortunately, for Graham, she does live in America -- and Americans love bestowing awards upon stuff they've seen (i.e., "Austin Powers"), as opposed to stuff they've been told they should see (i.e., "Election"). Hence at Tuesday's sixth annual, public-determined Blockbuster Entertainment Awards in Los Angeles, laurels went to the ultra-mainstream likes of Graham, Tom Hanks (fave drama actor, "The Green Mile"), Cameron Diaz (fave dramatic actress, "Any Given Sunday") and Adam Sandler (fave comedy actor, "Big Daddy"). We could detail the rest, but why? For one thing, it's too depressing. For another thing, you can see for yourself June 20 on Fox when the ceremony is telecast.

Both films took top honors in their respective categories Sunday night at the 52nd Annual WGA awards, handed out at twin ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles. The "Beauty" trophy went to scribe Alan Ball, the "Election" one to co-screenwriters Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor. SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 1, 2000 -- "American Beauty," the dark existential comedy set in Anywhere, Suburbia, led the pack as nominations were announced today for the 6th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, honoring performances in both film and TV acting. The film picked up four nominations, including a best actor nod for Kevin Spacey, a best actress one for Annette Bening and a best supporting actor one for Chris Cooper. The "Beauty" cast also was singled out for an ensemble acting nomination. Trailing "American Beauty" in the movie division with a total of three nods is Spike Jonze's head-scratching absurdist offering "Being John Malkovich". That flick also earned a best ensemble acting nomination, as well as best supporting actress nods for Cameron Diaz and Catherine Keener. Along with "American Beauty" and "Being John Malkovich," Paul Thomas Anderson's spra
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 18, 2000 -- Has the fate of "American Psycho" been sealed even before its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival? The big-screen adaptation of the controversial, ultra-violent Bret Easton Ellis novel has been slapped with an ungainly NC-17 by the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association of America. The film, the sophomore endeavor from Mary Harron ("I Shot Andy Warhol"), depicts the psychopathic behaviors of a Wall Street wunderkind (played by Christian Bale) who kills women in his off hours. It is scheduled to debut nationwide in theaters April 7. Yet despite the flick's subject matter, its NC-17 apparently wasn't awarded for bloodshed, but for what the MPAA calls "explicit sexuality." While the organization today declined comment, trade-paper reports says the ratings board frowned on a scene in which Bale's character eng
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 3, 2000 -- Director Sam Mendes' "American Beauty" took top honors today as the Online Film Critics Society handed down its third annual awards. The quirky tale of modern-day life in a suburban nightmare was named best picture by the 112-member group of Web-based writers and critics. "American Beauty" also took nods for Mendes (best director) and star Kevin Spacey (best actor). The film leads all comers going into the Jan. 20 Golden Globes, with six nominations. SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 8, 2000 -- How about this for a test of inner peace? A wailing newborn screaming in the middle of the night -- every night. That's right. Looks like the road to nirvana for the Buddhist-minded Richard Gere will, for a little while at least, be one characterized primarily by dirty diapers, the above-mentioned nightly cacophony and a decided lack of quiescence. Gere and actress Carey Lowell, the actor's on-again, off-again partner since 1995, welcomed the birth of their first child -- a baby boy -- Sunday night in New York. The kid, given name Homer James Jigme Gere, weighed in at a healthy 8 pounds, 12 ounces. No word from either of the proud parents on the exact etymological inspiration for the kid's three-part name. Gere is, of course, best known for the type of rough-trade hunkiness he embodies in such flicks as "American Gig

LOS ANGELES, April 12, 2000 -- Is it because taxes are lower in the U.S. than in the U.K.? Does he loathe the British tabloids? Or is it because he really, really liked playing Nixon? Whatever the reason, Anthony Hopkins gave up the Union Jack for the stars and stripes and became a U.S. citizen here today. Without any hoopla or fanfare, the 1992 Oscar winner ("Silence of the Lambs") was stealthily ushered through a back entrance in and out of a downtown federal courthouse for a short (and very private) swearing in by a judge in the late afternoon. Hopkins evaded a throng of reporters who wanted to ask him about his citizenship switch. According to certain sources, John Travolta and Steven Spielberg attended the ceremony as witnesses. Even Hopkins' publicist wasn't able to shed much light on the Welsh actor's motivations. "I believe it's because he's lived
