HOLLYWOOD, May 26, 2000 -- It's not quite the Case of the Stolen Oscars, but it is the Matter of the "Everybody Loves Raymond" Heist. Wednesday in North Hollywood, Calif., a truck containing 9,600 screener tapes of the CBS sitcom was swiped, today's Daily Variety reports. The videotapes -- each containing four episodes of the series -- were to be mailed to Emmy voters ostensibly to remind them what a great show "Everybody Loves Raymond" is. A new round of dubs has already been ordered. Today, Los Angeles police had no details on the crime. Series exec producer Phil Rosenthal, in Variety, joked that he doubted "the intelligence of thieves who would steal 9,600 tapes of free TV."
HOLLYWOOD, May 12, 2000 - Hayden Christensen, who? For most, the 19-year-old Canadian was an unknown until he became the (still-unconfirmed) lock to play Anakin Skywalker in "Star Wars: Episode II." But to a handful, the actor was not only already a household name, but virtually a part of their lives. Welcome to the Hayden Christensen fan culture, which -- much like the fandom of other idiosyncratic interests -- consists of a ring of do-it-yourself Web sites dedicated to the actor's honor. This week, we discovered at least six Christensen fan sites (see below), some run by teenyboppers "girls" ranging in age from 14 to 20. So, who are the pre-"Star Wars" Hayden Christen fans? And why are they Hayden Christensen fans? We wanted to know. We found out. "I first saw [Hayden] in 'Trapped in a Purple Haze' [a 2000 TV-movie]. I think that he is an amazing actor," says S
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 16, 2000 -- First, an apology. Because "Fail Safe" was presented "live" last Sunday, and because the ending was a closely kept secret, and because we never bothered to actually see the original movie on which it was based, we just had no idea. If this column was responsible in any way for your sitting through an hour and a half of nail-biting suspense, only to get to the part where the president of the United States decides that dropping an atomic bomb on New York City would be a good idea (as opposed to the goofiest plot point ever), we apologize. We would also like to apologize on behalf of the 1960s, a time when, apparently, this ending made sense. -- The Discovery Channel presents three hours worth of some pretty rare footage of dinosaurs in their natural habitat. SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 10, 2000 -- Leave it to the insurance types with their legal babble to ruin everything -- and that's including "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."Reports today say that Buena Vista Entertainment, the ABC/Disney production wing behind the champion game show, has been taken to the British High Court of Justice by its London-based insurers. Why? The smarty-pants types at the insurance firm of Goshawk Syndicate feel that the quiz-show's questions have just gotten too bloody easy. So easy that, the Goshawk folks fear, the show will be minting too many millionaires -- a scenario equivalent to a depthless money pit for an insurer.Simply put, the Goshawk camp wants out of its contract with ABC -- and nothing short of a ruling by the crown is going to stop the company from getting it.Here's the breakdown of the financial implications for Goshawk if
