  • Business as Usual on Napster

HOLLYWOOD, Mar. 4, 2001 -- Despite reports on Friday that Napster would voluntarily implement new screening technologies to filter copyright-protected material, it appeared to be business as usual on the site this weekend.

Hoping to avoid a court order that could put the company out of business altogether, Napster offered on Friday to block user access to what could amount to millions of files. "We will begin later this weekend to block the transfer of file names we have previously received from copyright holders, consistent with the 9th Circuit's ruling," Napster's CEO, Hank Barry, said in a statement on Friday.

Major record labels, music publishers, and bands like Metallica and Dr. Dre, who oppose Napster, submitted some 5,600 songs they wanted removed from the service. But according to The Hollywood Reporter and user reports, many of the songs, if not all of them, were

  • EXTRA: Carrey's Unfunny Business

HOLLYWOOD, July 24, 2000 -- Whether the MPAA or the PTA approve or not, vulgarity is here to stay. But whether Jim Carrey is here to stay or not, that’s another question. Carrey, who has had an indelible hand in shaping twisty-faced humor into a proud genre of its own, failed to hit the high water mark with his latest comedic foray, "Me, Myself & Irene." The Farrelly brothers-directed flick made a less-than-Carrey-like $24 million in its opening weekend and has grossed $83.1 million after five weeks. Not exactly a bomb, but in a summer that saw a $42 mil debut from a blatantly derivative flick called "Scary Movie", Carrey's no longer the undisputed King of Comedy.

Until 1998's "The Truman Show" ($125.6 mil), it looked like the chameleon comedian could do no wrong. It all began with his 1994 breakthrough hit "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" ($108.3 mil), followed by "Dumb and Dumber"

  • Halle Gives Howie the Business

HOLLYWOOD, July 13, 2000 -- Halle Berry wants to know: Where's Regis when you need him?

The actress clashed mildly with fill-in co-host Howie Mandel today on "Live With Regis and Kathie Lee," after Mandel opened the show with a hit-and-run joke at Berry's expense.

Mandel quipped that he had "bumped" into Berry backstage before the show, but she failed to stop and kept walking past him down a hallway. It was, of course, an allusion to Berry's hit-and-run accident in Los Angeles earlier this year, which resulted in criminal charges and a civil suit.

"I was so shocked to come to what's like a home, and to be disrespected almost to my face," Berry said, adding that she "loves" Regis and Kathie Lee. She didn't have to say how she feels about Mandel.

"To be joked about, almost to your face, that's a hard thing to rise above today," she said.
