  • Stipe's out of the closet

In Time magazine's current issue, R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe reveals--after years of public speculation--he is indeed homosexual. Stipe, 41, tells Time: "I was being made to be a coward about it, rather than someone who felt like it was really a very private thing." He says he's been in a serious relationship with "an amazing man" for the past three years, but refuses to divulge his companion's identity. R.E.M.'s new album, Reveal, hit stores Tuesday.

  • EXTRA: KISS Cleans Out Its Closets

HOLLYWOOD, June 27, 2000 -- Back in the days when KISS was a renegade rock 'n' roll band, it was rumored that their name was an acronym for Knights In Satan's Service. But after the much-publicized KISS auction last weekend at Paramount Studios here in Hollywood, we can think of better ones: "Krap Inc. Salvage Sale," or maybe "Kapitalists In Self-Service." And we're sure of at least one thing: Gene Simmons never throws away anything. Anything.

Let's say you're a KISS fan, a real die-hard. OK, how much would you pay for a New Year's greeting card that Simmons once received from bandmate Paul Stanley? A card imprinted with the saying, "Is it my imagination, or is life getting better?" and bearing Paul's handwritten inscription: "Dear Gene, hope you like these. Thanks for another great year. -- Paul."

Well, somebody from Baton Rouge paid $850 for it. That's 850 bucks, not $

  • Star Out of 'Closet'

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 9, 2000 -- The infectious bug that has been plaguing TV series of late -- you know, the "I feel that my time with the show is up and I've decided to move on" epidemic -- has claimed another victim.

The latest casualty is none other than "Veronica's Closet's" Kathy Najimy. Trade papers report today that the actress, who plays Olive, Veronica's (Kirstie Alley) trusted sidekick and confidant, will bid farewell to the NBC comedy at the end of this season.

Najimy tells Variety that her decision to leave the show is based purely on personal reasons. With "Veronica's Closet" behind, Najimy reportedly plans to spend more time with her 3-year-old daughter, not to mention more of the same said time on a would-be "feature career."

Of course, the concept of "leaving" "Veronica's Closet" might become a moot point. The unbeloved comed

  • NEWSMAKERS: 'Veronica's Closet' star offers settlement

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 27, 2000 -- "Veronica's Closet" star Wallace Langham has proposed a cash settlement with the man who accused him of assault and anti-gay slurs, according to The Associated Press.

The man, whose identity was not released, says the 34-year-old actor beat him and kicked him when he looked at tattoos on the arms and midriff of Langham's girlfriend at a supermarket. He also says Langham made anti-gay slurs. The man was treated for bruises and an injured jaw.

Langham, whose character on the NBC sitcom is widely thought to be gay, contends that he was provoked by the man and denies making such slurs. His lawyer said Tuesday that an unspecified amount of money was put in escrow for the settlement, which is contingent upon prosecutors dropping hate crime and battery charges.
