  We'll give the UPN this, though. Of all the new fall schedules unveiled this week, UPN's was the briefest. (It only broadcasts two hours a night, five nights a week.)
  
  For those who care, UPN will introduce three new series: "Girlfriends," a sitcom; the hourlong action series "Freedom," starring the aforementioned Bodhi Elfman; and, "Level 9," an hourlong thriller. Additionally, the network gets style points for picking up ABC castoff "The Hughleys."
  
  In other news, "Malcolm & Eddie" has been canceled. Remember that show? It was the one you didn't watch for four years.

  Fox today announced its new fall schedule, and Hewitt's show -- the "Party of Five" spinoff "Time of Your Life" -- wasn't on it. The network won't tell you what that means.

CBS today renewed the action series for an eighth season. You know how long "I Love Lucy" ran? Seven seasons. Perhaps if Lucy had had some of that Chuck Norris magic ...
  
  In other CBS-related fall TV news today, the network unveiled a schedule aimed to serve its current shut-in audience (renewing the older-skewing "Diagnosis Murder," "Nash Bridges," "Walker," "Becker," etc.) while building its future shut-in audience (launching a sitcom starring Bette Midler, icon of the graying baby boomers).
  
  Among the series being shown the exit door were: "Martial Law," "Early Edition," buzz favorite "Now and Again" and never-quite "ER" rival "Chicago Hope" (plugged pulled after six seasons).

  FALL TV: ABC Punts 'Sports Night'

  HOLLYWOOD, May 16, 2000 -- You know the TV gods just don't care when "Sports Night" gets the hook, while Jon Cryer gets his umpteenth chance to prove he is, too, more than The Guy Who Played Duckie. But so it goes. Top-rated ABC took its turn at the here's-our-fall-schedule game today, introducing four new series (starring the likes of Geena Davis and, yes, Jon Cryer), axing more than a half-dozen (including the likes of "The Hughleys" and, yes, "Sports Night") and keeping Regis more than fully employed for another TV year.
  
  The network dissed "NYPD Blue" for a second straight year, asking the long-running cop show to again share its longtime Tuesday night time slot with returning drama series "Once and Again."
  
  Among the goners, "Sports Night," which drew lots of praise from reviewers, but little attention from viewers, reportedly is bound for HBO, where things like ratin

  FALL TV: 'Felicity' Put on Probation

  HOLLYWOOD, May 16, 2000 -- Don't look for "Felicity" on the dean's list. Yes, the WB today did formally (and finally) renew the struggling college series, but it also placed it on the equivalent of academic probation.
  
  While "Felicity" will return for a third season next fall, it will share its time slot with another almost-canceled show, "Jack & Jill." (The Keri Russell series will hold down the 9-10 p.m. Wednesday hour until January, at which time, "Jack & Jill" will be called on to serve your entertainment needs.)
  
  The "Felicity"-lives storyline was the highlight of WB's fall schedule announcments, unless you're a "Roswell" fan, in which case your psyched that that almost-canceled show also did not get canned.

  FALL TV: A World Without 'Jesse'

  HOLLYWOOD, May 15, 2000 –- Well, we won't have "Jesse" to kick around anymore. "Veronica's Closet," either. NBC today formally axed its two biggest unintentional punchlines (if you don't count "Suddenly Susan" -- also gone), unveiling a 2000-01 fall schedule replete with drama, "Seinfeld"-ian comedy and generally bereft of those yuppie-fied, workplace-set, wannabe "Friends" sitcoms that the Peacock's been (unsuccessfully) pushing for about seven years now.
  
  Oh, "Freaks and Geeks" officially has no place to call home, either, as of today. (No accounting for taste.)
  
  Most reports on NBC's new schedule will make a big deal out of "Frasier" being kicked out of its key, Thursday time slot in favor of "Will & Grace."   Just one day after ABC announced its surprising fall 2001 lineup, CBS followed suit Wednesday with some curveballs of its own.

  The Eye Network will bring back 16 primetime programs, CBS President Les Moonves announced Wednesday - including Survivor, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Everybody Loves Raymond and Judging Amy - and also will introduce eight new series starring some of Hollywood's heavyweights.

  Survivor and CSI will remain Thursday's double-threat, and the Monday lineup of strong sitcoms, including King of Queens, Yes, Dear, Raymond and Becker, also will stay untouched.

  New blood, however, will shake up CBS' remaining primetime schedule.

  Plenty, say the major TV networks as they begin their weekly series of meetings in New York known as the TV "upfront," hyping their 2001-02 TV schedules to advertisers. As much as 80 percent of next season's ad inventory is bought during this time.

  NBC and the WB have announced their lineups, with ABC scheduled to make its presentation Tuesday.

  NBC will shake things up a little. It has lessened its sitcom load by scheduling only eight comedy series, including three new sitcoms, the lowest the network has aired in two decades. Gone is the Sunday night movie, an NBC staple since the mid-1970s. It also is banking on its new primetime game show, The Weakest Link, to prosper. The Anne Robinson-hosted quizzer will remain at 8 p.m. Mondays while a second serving will now air at 8 p.m. Sundays.

  HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 1, 2000 -- Christopher Reeve just can't catch a break these days. Except, that is, when he's breaking his leg.
  
  The paraplegic "Superman" star fell and severely broke his left leg last week while undergoing physical therapy aimed at enabling him to walk again. He was rushed into surgery and then spent five days hospitalized.
  
  It's not the kind of scandal-fueld story that we usually cull from the weekly tabloids, but we felt Reeve's plight and his brave battle against the odds were worth noting.

  Model/Actress Jerry Hall Falls Victim to Robbery

  HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 29, 2000 -- While actress Jerry Hall was taking off her clothes during a theatrical performance of The Graduate, thieves were trying to steal the shirt off her back.
  
  The Texas-born former wife of Mick Jagger called police to her southwest London home on Sept. 27th, when she returned from work to discover that her house had been burglarized. Officers arrived at the scene but did not find any suspects, a police spokeswoman told the BBC.
  
  Several items were stolen, Hall told police. No word on what exactly the crooks made off with. Hall's luxurious mansion is worth approximately $7.3 million.

  HOLLYWOOD, July 18, 2000 -- Maybe it was the ultra-bright yellow that covered everything from the giant show banners to the "yellow carpet" that made the critics really, really want to cover a TV movie called "Growing Pains: A Reunion." Or maybe it was because the ABC summer press tour, held Sunday and today at the tony Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Pasadena, was like one of those motivational seminars, luxury-style.
  
  After a gourmet lunch served by the pool, the reporters hunkered down for Q&A sessions with network officials and stars of the upcoming fall lineup. An elaborate stage in the hotel ballroom was flanked by massive ABC logos and two huge video screens, to better enable network officials to introduce the shows and stars of its upcoming fall TV lineup.
