Additionally, Alexander McQueen and Kate Moss reportedly got into a shoving match, resulting in the waif-like model storming off the catwalk. BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Jan. 21, 2001 -- One thing remains clear after tonight's 58th Annual Golden Globe Awards: There was a definite lack of a dominant film on the block. Though certain sure bets did come out victorious, no single film was able to sweep the Globes, leaving the upcoming Oscar race as wide open as it was before. Heavy contenders "Traffic," "Almost Famous," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Gladiator" all took home two Globes apiece at the annual star-studded event. As expected, Julia Roberts won the award for best actress in a movie (drama) for her work in "Erin Brockovich". However, she was visibly surprised when "Brockovich" director Steven Soderbergh went home empty-handed. "I was shocked, actually," Roberts said backstage. "I suppose when I presented the best director and Steven [Soderbergh] didn't win for either film ["Traffic" and "Erin
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 12, 2000 -- You can just imagine the meeting of NBC executives as they contemplate making a dent in the game-show-fueled ABC juggernaut: "What can we do to really lay the 'Smackdown' in the ratings? Who or what is big enough, tough enough, 'electrifying' enough to send Regis Philbin into the kitchen to open up that fridge and pour himself a nice tall glass of SHUT-UP JUICE?!" The answer? "Freaks and Geeks" is back Mondays! And The Rock is hosting "Saturday Night Live"! Who is The Rock, you ask? He is only the World Wrestling Federation's "People’s Champion," as well as the self-proclaimed "most-electrifying man in sports entertainment." (Duh.) Back to those guys in a second. HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 19, 2001 -- Looks like "Erin Brockovich" is ready for her TV assault. Universal Pictures has sold the basic cable rights for the Julia Roberts starrer to TNT for $7 million, Daily Variety reports. HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 1, 2000 -- It isn’t easy living down a bad reputation, and recent reports aren’t helping the "Runaway Bride," Julia Roberts. New York magazine is reporting that Roberts hasn’t necessarily been very lovey-dovey with boyfriend/actor Benjamin Bratt. In fact, the magazine says they haven’t seen each other in quite some time. As you might remember, the "Pretty Woman" and "Runaway Bride" starrer has a track record of leaving her men in the dust. She dumped fiancé Kiefer Sutherland for "Speed II" hunk Jason Patric, and her marriage to country singer Lyle Lovett was short-lived at best. She’s in Mexico, filming her latest flick, "The Mexican." He’s relatively nearby, filming "Miss Congeniality" in Texas, yet neither one has taken the time to visit the other on their sets, the magazine reports. But if you ask their reps, nothing can be further from
HOLLYWOOD, June 16, 2000 -- The commencement tune that’ll inaugurate the rite of passage known as the high-school graduation this year ain’t necessarily gonna be "Pomp and Circumstance." And for that, Generation Y can thank Vitamin C and her god-awful, er, best-selling ditty, "Graduation (Friends Forever)." For those who have yet to become casualties of the teen-pop assault, Vitamin C (not to confused with the little known Oakland-based rapper of the same call name) is actually Colleen Fitzgerald -- erstwhile frontwoman for the disbanded alt rock group Eve’s Plum. Fitzgerald went solo as a singer-songwriter to churn out sunny, happy tunes (hence her name) for her self-titled debut album released late last year. The "Graduation" song in question is actually more like a rap (with lines of introspection like "where we’re gonna be/when we turn twenty-five"). Its chief distin
HOLLYWOOD, June 1, 2000 -- Nothing like bad taste to make you some bucks. The Rock -- aka the World Wrestling Federation guy from UPN’s "Smackdown!" -– is in talks to star in two films: one a good guy/bad guy flick, and the other, an untitled big-budget sci-fi flick, today's Daily Variety says. But wait: There's more: Variety says the wrestler will get about $5 million per pic. For your viewing pleasure, Mr. Rock (real name: Dwayne Johnson) is also hooked up for the sequel to 1999's action-horror hit "The Mummy." STILL GOING STRONG: Today's Hollywood Reporter says Gene Hackman is negotiating to star in the drama-actioner "Behind Enemy Lines." Directed by commercial director John Moore, Hackman will play a veteran Marine who, along with a young Navy pilot, must fight to survive after they’re stranded in enemy territory. Reese Witherspoon GOING BL
HOLLYWOOD, May 23, 2000 -- Looks like another "Saturday Night Live" reunion is in the making. Today's Daily Variety says Will Ferrell, aka the "SNL" guy from those laff-riot comedies "A Night at the Roxbury" and "Superstar," is slated to join Mike Myers in "Dieter," a big-screen project inspired by Myers old skit "Sprockets." The story will follow Myers' suggestively kinky German talk-show host Dieter as his beloved pet monkey gets kidnapped. Ferrell will play his American cousin who is enlisted to find the missing monkey. GIRL TROUBLE: "Dawson’s Creek’s" Katie Holmes will join Tom Sizemore, Tim Allen and Rene Russo in "Big Trouble," a Disney comedy about a group of people whose lives are interrupted by a nuclear scare. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Holmes will play Russo’s daughter.
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 6, 2000 -- As the box-office turns: Is Julia Roberts still the best thing going? Or will Samuel L. Jackson open up a can of whoop-you-know-what and knock her off her pedestal? This weekend, four new movies hit theaters nationwide ("Rules of Engagement," "Black and White," "Ready To Rumble" and "Return to Me") but experts think that only "Rules," starring Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones, has the cojones to kick Julia's box-office butt and end the three-weekend-long reign of "Erin Brockovich." "I think it's gonna be tight for No. 1," says Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box-office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations Co. Here's a look at the new players: "Rules of Engagement" RULES OF ENGAGEMENT (See the trailer) The skinny: Samuel L. Jackson is a military man wrongfully court-martialed for murder; Tommy Lee Jones is his gruff lawyer
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 23, 2000 -- Julia Roberts' "Erin Brockovich" won't have to settle for less than first place in its second weekend. Julia Roberts After its big $28 million opening, the showy biopic should remain atop the chart, insiders say. Even if business fell off 30 percent, it'd still be pushing $20 million at the box office. One observer had the Top Five stacked up this way: "Erin Brockovich" at No. 1; newcomer "Romeo Must Die" at No. 2; followed by "Mission to Mars" and "Final Destination" with about $6 million in ticket sales each, and the teen drama "Here on Earth" "probably" in fifth place with about $5 million to $6 million. An insider said "Erin Brockovich" is showing up in tracking scores as the No. 1 film of choice by 35 percent of moviegoers. "'Erin''s been holding up fine. They did $2.3 million on Monday and $2.6 million on Tuesday
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 20, 2000 - This pro-wrestling thing never ends. "The Mummy" As if it weren't bad (good?) enough that the walking, talking thyroid cases we call pro wrestlers dominate cable ratings, if not the thoughts of our young ones, now one of their leaders is coming to the movies. The Rock, last seen hosting Saturday's edition of "Saturday Night Live" on NBC, is in talks to play the baddie in the planned sequel to 1999 box-office hit "The Mummy." Trade-paper reports today say Mr. Rock (er, Dwayne Johnson) will play a half-man, half-scorpion, as opposed to the half-man, half-beast thing he does most of the time. For the uninitiated, The Rock is a fine fellow known to entertain men, women and children with his battle cry: "Do you smell what The Rock's cooking?" PIANO MAN: Writer/director Philip Kaufman ("The Right Stuff") is set to cal
