Yes, the spankin' new musical comedy version of the smash indie "The Full Monty" opened last Thursday at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre to great reviews, including one in Monday's Variety, but this column has always been a little, uh, skeptical of critics. But one of the theater world's most seasoned professionals (now a major force on the West Coast after having cut his teeth in New York for years) caught a preview early last week and declared "The Full Monty" an "unequivocal smash" and "howlingly commercial."Yes, playwright Terrence McNally ("The Kiss of the Spider Woman," "Master Class," "Love! HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 13, 2000 -- "Meet the Parents" and "Remember the Titans" took the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, last week. And guess what, the smart bets are that they’ll remain in those positions again this week. "’Meet the Parents’ and 'Remember the Titans' are going to be the top two films again," Brandon Gray of boxofficemojo.com told Hollywood.com. "’Meet’ had a stunning opening. Even if it takes a hit, it is still going to make a sizable amount. The film has the momentum right now, and it’s clearly the top movie." As for "Remember the Titans," Gray predicts that it’ll stick to the runner-up slot again this week for the simple fact that it is a crowd-pleasing film, meaning that it makes people feel all warm and fuzzy. But if you’ve already seen the above two films, there are other choices out there. Here’s a glimpse at the films opening this w

HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 5, 2001 -- Can't we all just get along? Looks like we can.In a last-ditch attempt to save the entertainment industry from a devastating strike, The Writers Guild of America has agreed to stretch their film and TV contract negotiations to today. WGA's generous gesture contradicts its original two-week deadline, but this sudden move is a promising sign that both sides are close to a settlement.Negotiators have agreed to talk today, but no deadline has been set for this new round of discussion. When the bargaining began on January 22, the WGA issued a two-week deadline on talks. If there was no resolution within that time, WGA members vowed to pull the plug on further negotiation until a month before their contract expires on May 2. Moments after the meetings began at WGA headquarters, Writers Guild of America West president John Wells revised the terms by im
HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 14, 2001 -- "Beverly Hills, 90210" alumnus Jason Priestley will spend five days in a private L.A. work-release program after pleading no contest last year to a felony drunken-driving charge. An L.A. judge sentenced the former teen heartthrob in March to five days in the correctional facility and three year's summary probation. Priestley's driver's license was also suspended for one year, and he was ordered to enroll in a three-month drug- and alcohol-treatment program in exchange for dropping a second felony DUI charge. The actor will serve his time this month, and the five-day stay must be completed by Jan. 30. Priestley, 31, was arrested in December 1999 after he crashed his Porsche into a power pole, trash cans and a parked car in the Hollywood Hills. HOW WILL NILES REACT? HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 7, 2001 -- A Florida judged gave actor Brad Renfro two years probation and ordered him to pay more than $4,000 to repair a yacht he tried to steal with a friend last summer, the Associated Press reports. ``I don't have any excuses or fast one-liners to pull out of my shoes,'' Renfro told Broward County Circuit Judge Ronald Rothschild on Thursday. Renfro, 18, the star of the 1994 film “The Client," and a friend tried to steal the yacht Aug. 28, but were caught by nearby boaters after the would-be thieves forgot to untie the $175,000 vessel from the dock. HOLLYWOOD, August 14, 2000 – When you're an official Emmy voter for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, you've got a lot of TV to watch. So, they'd better give you enough time to watch it. That's the thinking behind the Academy's move to extend the deadline for Emmy ballots five extra days, to Aug. 21. According to Variety, it's the first glitch in the new at-home Emmy balloting process that the Academy decided to try in response to criticism that the old balloting procedure, wherein a blue-ribbon panel chose the winners, was too conservative.
It looks like tough sledding for Hollywood this pre-Christmas weekend, according to distribution executives with an eye on tracking study data.None of the three new wide releases appears likely to open impressively."It doesn't look too exciting in terms of the openings," said one studioexecutive. "The first choice on 'Bicentennial Man' is running only like 8%. Now, admittedly, it's (only mid-week) but I would think they would like to have been in double digits by now."Buena Vista/Touchstone and Columbia Pictures' PG-rated sci-fi fantasy "Bicentennial Man," directed by Chris Columbus and starring Robin Williams, opens Friday at about 2,200 theaters. While 2,200 theaters is certainly a wide break, it's not as wide as last weekend's theater count for "Toy Story 2" (3,257), "The Green Mile" (2,875), "The World Is Not Enough" (3,063), "End Of Days" (2,652) or "Sleepy Ho
Oscar buzz continues at the box office this weekend as a few of the year's most highly touted films open in both wide and limited release. Tom Hanks and company lead the way in the prison drama "The Green Mile," based on the popular series by Stephen King and directed by Frank Darabont. Five years ago, Darabont came to prominence with another prison-bound tale by King called "The Shawshank Redemption." That movie, which frequently tops lists of the most popular films of all time, garnered seven Academy Award nominations. Other Oscar hopefuls include the limited releases "Cradle Will Rock" and "The Cider House Rules." "Cradle," directed by Tim Robbins and featuring an all-star cast, details the events of New York City's art scene in the 1930s. "Cider," directed by "What's Eating Gilbert Grape's" Lasse Hallstrom, is a quirky, coming-of-age love story adapted from John Irvin
