Lifetime, spurred by a 12 percent jump in viewership from a year ago, led a logjam among the top five rated cable networks with a rating of 1.9 in cable homes, Nielsen reported. USA slipped to second at 1.8. USA was down from last year's same quarter rating of 2.2, largely due to the loss of WWF programming which TNN outbid USA for earlier this year. TNT and the Cartoon Network tied for third at 1.7. TNT was down 11 percent from last year, while the Cartoon Network's audience level remained flat. TBS rounds out the top five, at 1.6. Johnny Depp, to British newspaper The Independent while promoting Blow, on how fatherhood gave his life meaning:
"I went through 35 years of a strange dark fog. I never really quite understood what the point of anything was, you know, in life. It wasn't until Vanessa [Paradis] and then the birth of our daughter that I finally realized that there is something to live for. I didn't have the greatest childhood, but you know, so what, plenty of people have been through more difficult and devastating things and you just have to get through that. That whole thing of wanting to do drugs and wanting to numb yourself, you know, it's just postponing the inevitable."
It certainly pays to be an Academy Award winner-in more ways than one. Sure, there's the adulation and prestige one receives when winning an Oscar, but did you also know it could help you live longer?
According to a study published in Tuesday's Annals of Internal Medicine, Academy Award winners live nearly four years longer than those actors who have been nominated but haven't actually won the gold statuette.
Lead author Dr. Donald Redelmeier, director of clinical epidemiology at Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Center in Toronto, who specializes in general Internal Medicine, attributes these additional years of life to the kind of satisfaction a person gets from a deep sense of accomplishment, making them more resilient.

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 13, 2000 -- What’s the perk of directing a critically acclaimed, Oscar-winning movie? Answer: It guarantees you at least a couple more directing gigs thereafter. The first film produced under the deal is said to be an untitled murder mystery based on a true story. HOLLYWOOD, July 25, 2000 -- Can you picture pretty Leo DiCaprio as a gangsta? DreamWorks hopes so. The Hollywood Reporter says the studio is courting DiCaprio to star in "Catch Me If You Can," a biopic about real-life criminal Frank Abagnale, the youngest man ever to make the FBI Most Wanted list. Here's a twist: The movie would probably be directed by Gore Verbinski, who made "Mousehunt" and just finished a flick called "The Mexican" with Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts. COUNTING TO ELEVEN: Confirming a weeks-old rumor, Pitt has joined the increasingly expensive cast of the forthcoming "Ocean's Eleven" remake, to be directed by Steven Soderbergh. Also confirmed for the flick are George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Mark Wahlberg. Word has it that Clooney's taking the Frank Sinatra role, while Pitt's playing the Dean Martin character. But who'll be the new Norman Fell?
HOLLYWOOD, June 13, 2000 -- What with all the drug rumors and the occasional botched Oscar appearance, Whitney Houston's life may appear troubled, but -- hey! -- at least her husband'll be out of jail for their anniversary! Yes, this good news coming Monday in Florida where Houston spouse Bobby Brown got slammed with a 75-day jail sentence for parole violations. All right, we admit this doesn't really sound like good news, but that's because we didn't get to the part yet where behind-bars Bobby got credit for 39 days already served! (The King of New Jack Swing's been in the cooler since May 10.) Anyway, if Monday counted as one day that means he'd have just 35 more to go, which means he'd be out around July 17, which means he'd be out in time to celebrate the eighth anniversary of his blessed union with Houston on July 18! Kinda makes you tear up, doesn't it?
SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 2, 2000 -- It seems like only a 100 years ago that the American public seemed to truly, deeply care about Jennifer Love Hewitt. Hoping that the Love affair (wink, wink) can be sparked again, Fox has decided to relaunch the starlet's struggling series, "Time of Your Life," this summer. Unused episodes of the largely unseen "Party of Five" spinoff will be unspooled beginning June 14. No word yet on whether the show will be brought back for a second season. BOYBAND DILEMMA: Hope you're not hooked on "Making the Band," ABC's experiment in "Real World"-style storytelling (the story in this case being the hatching of another Backstreet Boys-esque boyband). The network's pulling the Friday night series effective now. It won't return until after the May sweeps. Same goes for "Talk to Me," the new (and likely late) Kyra Sedgwick sitcom which debuted on A
SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 2, 2000 - Admit it. You've heard it while station surfing the dead radio airwaves, you've watched the video in its entirety (voluntarily or not) on MTV. And yes, you've even caught yourself unintentionally singing the insistently catchy chorus, "Do-di-do-do...Oops, I did it again, Di-da-di-di, I played with your heart..." We admit it. Like million of teenyboppers, we also have been listening to (and, watching) Britney Spears' new ditty, "Oops! I Did It Again," religiously since the debut of her video on MTV's "TRL" (that's "Total Request Live") at No. 1 on April 12.Everyday we tune in to try make sense of the plot line (not to mention the "Titanic" reference), and everyday we end up marveling at the blood-red, skintight bodysuit in which the popstress does most of her regimented dance moves. So imagine our genuine concern when the 18-year-old si
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 1, 2000 -- Steven Spielberg is no D.W. Griffith. And according to the Directors Guild of America, that's not a bad thing at all. Spielberg, the two-time Oscar-winning uber-filmmaker, has been tapped to receive the DGA's first-ever D.W. Griffith-less lifetime achievement honor. The "ET" blockbuster-meister is due to be feted at the 52nd Annual DGA Awards on March 11 in Los Angeles. The presentation will mark the first time since its inception in 1953 that the organization's lifetime achievement award has not been given in the name of legendary filmmaker D.W. Griffith. In December, the director's union announced its intentions to distance itself from the director of Hollywood's landmark -- but arguably racist -- epic "Birth of a Nation" (1915). The Civil War era-set film, the forerunner of the modern-day feature, depicted the birth of the Ku Klux
