So, Brett Ratner, what are you doing to redeem yourself? After obnoxiously dodging a reporter’s innocuous question with a homophobic slur, publicizing some offensive and inappropriate commentary about your relationship with Olivia Munn, offering what seemed like a halfhearted apology for said actions (focusing on all the wrong aspects), and then issuing a public self-castigation by resigning as producer of the 2012 Oscars in order to “teach yourself a lesson,” you’ve had a pretty hefty two days of inciting nationwide eye-rolls. So with what cinematic treasure chest will you bequeath America in order to clean up your image? A remake of The Last American Virgin? … Do you have a Plan B?
Ratner mentioned on The Howard Stern Show that he will be developing a remake of the 1982 comedy/drama about a group of high school friends trying to lose their virginities. I suppose you can call it a spiritual predecessor to American Pie, but the upcoming American Reunion has made me inscrutably sentimental over that series of movies…so I won’t.
The ’82 film starred Lawrence Monoson, Steve Antin and Joe Rubbo, and was itself a remake of an Israeli movie called Eskimo Limon (which translates to “Lemon Popsicle,” a phrase I am very afraid to look up in the Urban Dictionary). What exactly Ratner plans to do with the film (how he intends to modernize it or make it relevant) is yet unmentioned, nor are really any details about the project aside from his passion for it. So, we’ll just have to wait and see the Ratnerization to come of this not-quite-classic of the ’80s.
