Five Things About Argylle You Maybe Hadn’t Thought About Yet

It’s not a typo, it’s a new spy action comedy film! A spyactomedy, yeah?

As you can see, it comes replete with an ensemble cast, a catchy marketing ploy and a cat with a face that definitely doesn’t suggest “adopt, don’t shop.”

Here are five things you might be curious about producer and director Matthew Vaughn’s (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Kick-Ass, Snatch) latest … spyactomedy.

1. Argylle was not written by Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift, Instagram

The Swifties thought they’d solved a real mystery. All things were pointing to the fact that Miss Americana herself written Argylle: the Scottish Fold in a cat carrier backpack, an argyle sweater, the short film accompanying her song, “All Too Well,” and the red hair of female lead Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World franchise, Rocketman).
But alas, they were wrong, confirms Vaughn in an interview with Rolling Stone.

“There is a real book … and it’s a really good book. And there is an Elly Conway who wrote the book, but it’s not Taylor Swift,” he maintains. “… I did read the conspiracies and I was like, wow, they don’t leave a stone unturned! But it’s not Taylor Swift. She definitely didn’t write the book.”

2. So … Who Actually Wrote Argylle Then?

Penguin Books

Sometimes we just can’t go down rabbit holes. Thank goodness for the journalists who do though.

Sophia Nguyen of The Washington Post did and she found that while, yes, there is an Instagram page for Elly Conway, the trail kind of ended there.

Bryce Dallas Howard does play protagonist Elly Conway in the film. She’s a cloistered author of a series of best-selling spy novels with a cat in a backpack named Alfie. In real life though, Elly Conway might actually be a British thriller writer named Tammy Cohen, according to Nguyen.

Are we actually falling victim to a clever marketing ploy instead of going down a rabbit hole? Probably.

3. Argylle is most likely going to be the beginning of another franchise for Matthew Vaughn

Last October on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Vaughn told host Josh Horowitz that the book, Argylle (which actually came out in January 2024) would be based on the fourth installment of a series which hadn’t yet been finished.

“Mr. Lucas was clever enough to start Star Wars with Episode 4, so why not us?” said Vaughn.

4. Dua Lipa!

It’s the Albanian pop star’s first major acting role as she plays Lagrange, a sexy, seductive spy. She doesn’t appear on any of the soundtrack’s singing credits but we did find this video for “Electric Energy” featuring co-star Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), Boy George, Nile Rodgers and the rest of the cast.

5. The release date is Friday, February 2

That’s right, Apple Original Films in association with MARV, a Cloudy production will be in theaters then thanks to distribution by Universal Pictures. It will most likely be available on Apple TV+ in March for streaming and in April for digital purchase.
