The Fate of the Furious out front on the North American box office

The Fate Of The Furious has raced to the top of the North American box office in its opening weekend (14-16Apr17).

The action movie, starring Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, earned $100.2 million at the box office. The film also set records with its $532.5 million global haul and if estimates hold until the final numbers are tallied on Monday (17Apr17), it will beat Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the biggest worldwide opening. The sci-fi film debuted with $529 million in 2015.

It will also top Jurassic World for the largest international release. The eighth film in the franchise has earned $432.2 million overseas, while the Jurassic Park sequel took in $316.7 million in 2015.

However, The Fate of the Furious falls behind its predecessor Furious 7 and comes in as the second biggest opening on the North American box office for the franchise. Furious 7 earned $147 million when it debuted in 2015.

The Fate of the Furious marked the first movie late franchise star Paul Walker didn’t appear in, but he was never too far away from Diesel’s thoughts.

“There wasn’t a day, there wasn’t a scene, there wasn’t a second where I didn’t have Paul with me in the making of this movie,” he told SiriusXM Entertainment earlier this week (ends16Apr17).

Meanwhile, The Boss Baby comes in at number two with $15.5 million, while Disney’s Beauty and the Beast holds in third with $13.5 million.

Smurfs: The Lost Village and Going in Style close out the top five, respectively.
