Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Poor Things’ Premieres at Venice Film Festival

The Greek filmmaker has been a staple in the world of cinema since the disturbing and surreal Dogtooth (2009) put his work on the map. Now, he’s back for more weird and introspective fun with Poor Things.

So, What is Poor Things About?

Poor Things focuses on the evolution of Bella Baxter, played by Emma Stone. Unlike most protagonists, Bella is dead. However, she the brilliant, yet unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin, played by Willam Dafoe, resurrects her. Under Godwin’s guidance and protection, Bella learns how to live again. As she navigates her new identity while dealing with the consequences of her resurrection, she can’t help feeling trapped by it all. Eager to learn more about the world, Bella runs away. As she embarks on a whirlwind adventure across continents, she is joined by the slick Duncan Wedderburn, played by Mark Ruffalo.

Poor Things was scheduled to be released on 8 September 2023, but due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, the release date has since been delayed. The film is now scheduled to be released on December 8th.

The highly anticipated film is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, with the screenplay by Tony McNamara. The producer team includes  Yorgos Lanthimos, Emma Stone, Ed Guiney, and Andrew Lowe.
