We are sharing some of the top moments, quotes and lessons from this LEGENDARY Hollywood movie!

Legally Blonde taught us THE move to get someone’s attention

Elle’s friend and manicurist, Paulette (played by Jennifer Coolidge), is crushing on the UPS guy at the salon. Elle shows her just the thing to get his attention – the bend and snap!

All you have to do is “drop” your pen (or anything else lying around), bend down to grab it while sliding your hands down your leg, and then snap as you come up from picking up the item, stopping your arms next to your chest to accentuate your assets.

If you have yet to watch the movie or need a reason to rewatch, this scene alone is worth it. Plus you can get off the couch and practice your bend and snap with the Legally Blonde cast!

Legally Blonde taught us to think outside the box when applying to school (or a job)

Thinking outside the box like Elle Woods does, she shows off all her stills that make her a great lawyer in the most creative admissions video to Harvard Law School. Now this video doesn’t contain the typical content you might have included in your college essay or video. Elle showcases her at her sorority meeting talking about toilet paper, using legal jargon in everyday language and of course, recounting details while laying in the pool, which Reese Witherspoon recently reenacted on TikTok:

The scene is so ICONIC that Kim Kardashian recreated it two years ago, dressing up as Elle for Halloween in 2019. As we all know Kim is studying to become a lawyer herself.

Legally Blonde quotes that remind us about blessings in disguise

“What, like it’s hard?” – Elle Woods

We have sadly all been there, dumped by our ex when we least expect it. Thankfully the things we think are the worst thing that could possibly ever happen to us, happen to end up being the biggest blessings in disguise. Elle takes Warner’s reason for breaking up with her as her motivation. She studies and works hard to get into Harvard Law to prove to him that she can do anything. When Warner see’s Elle in the hallway at Harvard, his shock and expression lead to the unforgettable line, “What, like it’s hard?”

Warner didn’t think that Elle, a “Marilyn,”  could be a “Jackie” seeing as Warner’s goal was to be a senator by the time he was 30.

Legally Blonde’s “costume” party scene reminds you to embrace who you are

Now, adjusting to law school wasn’t easy for Elle, she didn’t necessarily “fit in” at first. Many were quick to judge her on her all pink outfits, outgoing personality and not being like everyone else. One of the many lessons you learn in the film is that you don’t have to change who you are to fit in. You just have to be yourself.

While in Elle’s attempt to fit in she gets invited to a “costume” party. Vivan, Warner’s fiance, invites her to the party that everyone else is attending. Elle being her true self comes in the best pink bunny costume. The only problem is, it isn’t a costume party, it’s just a regular party. Everyone is once again looking at Elle like the odd one out.

She doesn’t let this put her down. She marches over to Vivan and gives it right back to her, poking fun at her “costume” also known as her everyday clothes. This scene is so powerful as Elle stops letting everyone put her in a box and tell her who she is but she cracks down on the studying and does what she came to Harvard to do, become a lawyer.

Legally Blonde quotes that make us feel empowered

“I’m taking the dog, dumba**” – Paulette

Once again not letting anything get in her way, Elle helps her friend Paulette get her dog back from her ex. Elle and her dog Bruiser are a dynamic duo so there was no way she wouldn’t help get Rufus back.

Elle takes it to the legal level once again using her legal jargon in everyday life to help persuade Paulette’s ex to give her back her beloved bulldog. He had a hard time understanding all the big, legal words Elle was using. Paulette ended up putting simply for him saying “I’m taking the dog, dumba**.”

Elated that they get Paulette’s dog back they realize just how smart and powerful they are. That no man can make them feel small or belittle them.

Elle Woods proving herself worthy of a highly competitive internship is like, soo motivating

Elle’s professor has a large caseload including high profile clients for serious murder trials. This means he has to hire a couple of first year interns. There are only four freshmen student intern spots. Much to everyone’s surprise, Elle gets one of the four spots. She proves that not only can she make it but that she has the skills that rank her among the best in her freshman class.

Throughout the internship she proves time and time again her skills are an asset. She can connect with people involved in the case like no one else.

Legally Blonde quotes that prove that it’s not all about book smarts

You never know when your random knowledge may come in handy, and Elle proves that there is a use for all her fashion knowledge during the murder trial.

During court recess, Brooke Taylor’s pool boy (and witness) Enrique cuts Elle in line at the water fountain. Elle starts impatiently tapping her foot, annoyed that he cut her off.

When he finishes drinking, turns to her and says, “Don’t stomp your little last season Prada shoes at me, honey.”

Elle realizes that no ordinary guy knows the brand of shoe she is wearing and that he has been lying on the witness stand the entire time.

PLOT TWIST!

Her beauty smarts come in handy yet again in the courtroom.

Being the ultra talented woman Elle is, Brooke trusts Elle more than her original lawyer Callahan, making her lead lawyer. Despite her nerves, Elle proves that her beauty and hair care knowledge are just as valuable as anything else you are taught in school.

Elle, who is rocky and a bit unsure at first, sticks with it and as she is questioning Brooke’s step-daughter Chutney. She uncovers the biggest detail that sets Brooke free: Chutney claims to have gotten a perm and then got home and took a shower.

Elle Woods knows about perms, and knows something isn’t adding up:

“Isn’t the first cardinal rule of perm maintenance that you’re forbidden to wet your hair for at least 24 hours after getting a perm at the risk of deactivating the ammonium thioglycolate?”

Chutney, with her perfectly intact perm, then confesses to having killed her father, thinking she was killing Brooke. This leads to Elle winning her first case and freeing Brooke Taylor.

Legally Blonde quotes from Elle’s commencement speech remind you to have faith in yourself

The movie ends with Elle’s commencement speech at graduation in 2004. She reflects on her time at Harvard Law, both the good and the bad. Proving that everything happens for a reason and that you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to:

“On our very first day at Harvard, a very wise Professor quoted Aristotle: ‘The law is reason free from passion.’ Well, no offense to Aristotle, but in my three years at Harvard I have come to find that passion is a key ingredient to the study and practice of law — and of life. It is with passion, courage of conviction, and strong sense of self that we take our next steps into the world, remembering that first impressions are not always correct. You must always have faith in people. And most importantly, you must always have faith in yourself.”

In honor of Legally Blonde’s 20th anniversary be sure to watch or rewatch the ICONIC film that showcases women in power in a traditionally male dominated industry. You may learn a thing or two!
