This Fan Theory Explains Why Captain America Couldn’t Lift Thor’s Hammer

The upcoming Captain America: Civil War is going to pit the clean cut, golden boy Captain America against the smartass, playboy Iron Man. Pretty obvious who we should be rooting for right? Well actually Captain America might not be as perfect as we previously believed. Remember the scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron where Captain America isn’t able to lift Thor’s hammer? Well there’s a good reason for that. Despite his seemingly altruistic attitude and noble intentions, Captain America is a warmonger. He literally cannot operate unless he’s beating the shit out of someone.

In Age of Ultron, the Avengers are shown images of their greatest fears including their troubled past, the death of their loved ones, and the literal apocalypse. But what does Cap see? A woman who tells him the war is over. That’s right, Cap’s greatest fear isn’t death or destruction, it’s peace. Ultron even taunts Cap telling that he’s “pretending [he] could live without a war.” Captain America needs war and fears a life without violence. To put the danger of Captain America’s attitude into perspective, Cap is to World War II as the Punisher is to Vietnam.

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters May 6th.
